Zugzwang was a lightweight robot built by Team Entropy out of New Trier High school which competed in Season 2.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots.
It was a rectangular-shaped, two-wheel drive, invertible robot armed with a unique "bludgeoning drum" weapon. Zugzwang's name translates to "the compulsion to move" in German, but the word is also used in chess when referring to a situation that causes a player to be at a disadvantage if they make a move.
It did not perform well in competition, losing its only match to Destructobot. Following Season 2.0, neither Zugzwang nor Team Entropy returned to BattleBots. The team was considering competing at Season 3.0, but eventually decided not to due to conflicts with their graduation.[1]

Zugzwang vs. Destructobot Zugzwang's first and only match was a preliminary fight against Destructobot. As soon as the match began, Destructobot barreled towards Zugzwang, who was getting their weapon up to speed. As Destructobot made its way across the BattleBox, it randomly turned around and drove onto the Killsaws. The killsaws proceeded to rip off one of Destructobot's side axes, but Destructobot was still able to drive. During this time Zugzwang could only drive in circles on its square. Zugzwang eventually stopped moving and was counted out. Destructobot won the match by KO without ever touching its opponent and Zugzwang was eliminated from the competition. |
