ZAP is a heavyweight robot designed by Team Panic, which applied for BattleBots World Championship VII.

It is a two-wheel drive, invertible robot armed with twin spinning bars at the front and back of the robot. ZAP is a unique robot as it utilizes meltybrain technology to allow for it to show translational movement while simultaneously spinning on the spot. This, in theory, allows for ZAP to have all the benefits of a sit-and-spin robot without compromising control.[1] Meltybrain technology was scarcely seen in the classic era of the show, but was most notably used in thwackbot Herr Gepoünden. As its name suggests, ZAP has a pop comic theme, similar to the 2021 design of Slammo!.

On September 30, 2022, Team Panic uploaded a video confirming their rejection.[2] In spite of this, they still intend to build a 110kg version of ZAP. However, it will likely not compete in overseas events such as RoboGames as it was stated in the video that the cost involved in shipping a heavyweight internationally from Australia would be greater than building ZAP in the first place.

Builder and team captain Ben Hayton was part of the Gemini team for World Championship IV before attempting to qualify for BattleBots with bar spinner Bolt in 2020, and then with MacGuffin ahead of World Championship VI, but was unsuccessful on both occasions.

He has also competed in lower weight class events with success over the years, competing in UK beetleweight web-series Bugglebots with AnnieRUOK and designing multiple 150g robots with the use of 3D printing.

Trivia[]

  • If accepted, ZAP would have been the first robot in the modern BattleBots era to use meltybrain technology.
  • ZAP was one of two meltybrain designs to attempt to enter World Championship VII, the other being Discus.
