Not to be confused with the similarly-named heavyweight robot that attempted to compete in the 2004 NPC Charity Open.

Whambulance was a middleweight robot built by Team Bambino which competed at the first BattleBots IQ competition in 2002.

It was a two-wheel drive, box-shaped robot made from aluminum. Whambulance was armed with a vertical spinner at the front with teeth bolted to its outer edge. Whambulance performed well in competition despite issues concerning weapon reliability, picking up four wins in total across the tournament. However, lasting damage cost Whambulance during the end of competition rumbles.

The team also built another middleweight robot called Bambino, which competed in the final three season of Comedy Central BattleBots.[1][2]

Outside BattleBots[]

After BattleBots IQ, Whambulance continued to compete in the Robot Fighting League with mild success until its retirement in 2005.

During Battle Beach III in April 2005, Whambulance is known to have fought shell spinner KillJoy and lost by knockout.[3] It also took on Devil's Plunger, Heavy Metal Noise and KillerV during the competition.

Whambulance vs. Wee Willy Wedgy

BBIQ WWWvsWhambulanceRnd1

Whambulance is flipped by Wee Willy Wedgy.

In the first round of the bracket, Whambulance took on Wee Willy Wedgy. The fight started out well for Whambulance as it used its vertical spinner to take a chunk out of Wee Willy Wedgy's front wedge. However, Wee Willy Wedgy then flipped Whambulance, which attempted to use its disc to self-right, but damaged its own batteries. Unable to right itself, Whambulance was counted out and lost by knockout. Post-fight, the team installed a different fuse breaker in order to prevent this issue from happening again.[1]

Whambulance vs. HammerRoyd

Now in the loser's bracket, Whambulance faced HammerRoyd. This battle had to be postponed as neither team was originally ready, with the HammerRoyd team threatened with the possibility of having to forfeit.
"Hammeroid [sic] was still having problems and we weren't quite finished so both of us had to use our postponements. Although Hammeroid [sic] still wasn't ready after about an hour, the time came where the referees said they had 2 minutes to finish up or they would have to forfeit. They barely made it in time."

However, it ultimately went ahead and the fight started with Whambulance spinning its disc up, however it promptly stopped. Whambulance then switched tactics, and repeatedly pushed and shoved HammerRoyd around. HammerRoyd was having problems of its own, however, as in the rush to get their robot ready, the HammerRoyd team did not sufficiently charge their batteries. This caused HammerRoyd's drive to stop working. HammerRoyd was counted out, giving Whambulance the win by knockout.[1]

Whambulance vs. Discombotulator

Next in the loser's bracket was Discombotulator. Whambulance again began by spinning up, but the primary weapon again stopped shortly after. It then charged at Discombotulator, driving on top of its opponent before shoving it into the pulverizers where it was struck a total of six times. This assault from the arena hazard caused Discombotulator to stop working and a count began, confirming Whambulance's second win. Post-fight, the team fitted another fuse breaker to Whambulance.

Whambulance vs. Balronic Wedge

Whambulance's next opponent was Balronic Wedge. Again, Whambulance immediately got its vertical spinner up to speed, but this time, their primary weapon lasted the duration of the fight. The weapon made contact with Balronic Wedge, tearing Lexan away from its front and causing noticeable damage. Whambulance ultimately won the fight, though it is unknown if by knockout or judges' decision. They did not escape unscathed, however, suffering damage to their own disc.

Whambulance vs. Lurker

Looking to continue its winning run, Whambulance now drew Lurker. During the fight, the vertical spinner was able to carve several holes in Lurker along with ripping off one of its kill tallies that were taped onto the side. Whambulance was able to break Lurker's spinning hammer and defeated it to move on to the next round. Again, it is now known if this was by judges' decision or knockout.

Whambulance vs. Green Wave

Whambulance's next opponent was Green Wave. Whambulance was able to prevent Green Wave from spinning up to full speed early on and damaged its opponent's drive train, disabling a wheel. Though Green Wave now struggled to turn, its weapon was unharmed. Whambulance approached for another attack and both robots deflected across the arena. However, this attack caused significant damage to Whambulance and left it immobile. With Green Wave still able to show sufficient mobility to satisfy the judges, Whambulance was counted out and eliminated from the competition.

Whambulance vs. Defenestrator vs. Karl vs. E2 vs. PlasticBot vs. Wee Willy Wedgy vs. The Edge

Whambulance returned for one of five Consolation Rumbles at the end of the competition, which saw it take on six other opponents, including a rematch against Wee Willy Wedgy. However, lasting damage from its previous loss meant Whambulance was immobile from the start and played little part in the fight. The rumble was ultimately won by Wee Willy Wedgy and The Edge.
