For the page on the entry featuring the original Wedge of Doom in Long Beach 1999, see Spike of Doom
Wedge of Doom was a lightweight built by Tony Buchignani and Team Delta. At first it was just a small, steep wedge bot. It first competed in the original Robot Wars events beginning with 1996, competing in and winning the Featherweight class both that year and the next. It competed in the lightweight class of the Long Beach 1999 event with another builder's robot, Spike, making them Spike of Doom. Wedge of Doom then retired for three seasons before returning for Season 3.0 with an all-new design as well as a lifting arm. This edition was a rebuilt and renamed Evil Fish Tank and made it to the semifinals but eventually was rebuilt for the final two seasons, giving it 6-wheel drive. In Season 5.0 Wedge of Doom made it all the way to the finals before losing to Dr. Inferno Jr..
Wedge of Doom, according to botrank.com, has the highest historical ranking of any lightweight.
After BattleBots ended, Wedge of Doom was renamed Smashbox.
Wedge of Doom's first match was against Lobotomizer. Wedge of Doom won by KO and advanced to the final preliminary round, where it faced Dark Matter. Wedge of Doom won on a 39-6 judge's decision and advanced to the TV rounds, where it faced The Wacky Compass.
In the fight, The Wacky Compass was barely able to move before Wedge of Doom rammed it, bending one of the side armor plates, and then pushed it into the killsaws. The hit from the killsaws sent several more armor pieces flying. The Wacky Compass was visibly dead, as the armor was bent around the edges and keeping it from moving although it was still attempting to move. Wedge of Doom finished off The Wacky Compass by pushing it under the pulverizer and flattening it. The Wacky Compass was being counted out and Wedge of Doom won by KO. This win put Wedge of Doom to the round of 32, where it faced HammerHead.
In the match, Wedge of Doom lifted HammerHead against the screws and later pushed HammerHead under the pulverizer. After both robots were still moving in the end, the time ran out and Wedge of Doom won on a unanimous 45-0 judge's decision. This win put Wedge of Doom to the round of 16, where it faced Mecha Tentoumushi.
After Mecha Tentoumushi was smothering Wedge of Doom multiple times, Wedge of Doom started lifting Mecha Tentoumushi towards the screws by the pulverizer. After Wedge of Doom was caught by the screws while still being smothered inside its shell, Mecha Tentoumushi got itself under the pulverizer as it smashed the top of Mecha Tentoumushi's smothering shell very easily. This hit apparently caused one of Wedge of Doom's wheels to come off. The time ran out and possibly because of the damage sustained by Mecha Tentoumushi from the pulverizer, Wedge of Doom won on a close 23-22 judge's decision and advanced to the quarterfinals, where it faced Backlash.
Both robots met in the center of the arena and Backlash managed to tear off one of Wedge of Doom's wheels, sending it flying across the arena. Wedge of Doom, however, started pushing Backlash over to the killsaws and they tossed Backlash on its back, ripping off one of its side spikes in the process. Backlash's disc was still spinning and it caused Backlash to spin around in circles, smashing dents into the BattleBox floor. However, it couldn't self-right and Backlash was eventually counted out. Wedge of Doom won by KO and advanced to the semifinals, where it faced Gamma Raptor.
Both robots were driving around the BattleBox and Gamma Raptor later pushes Wedge of Doom against the arena wall. Gamma Raptor drives over the killsaws a few times and Gamma Raptor gets underneath Wedge of Doom again, though Wedge of Doom slips away. Both robots were diving around the BattleBox and both robots couldn't lift each other. One of the lifting tusks of Gamma Raptor has broken loose and Wedge of Doom has lost power to two of its wheels. Gamma Raptor slams into Wedge of Doom a few times, angling Wedge of Doom towards the pulverizer. At that point, Wedge of Doom rolls forward, right under the pulverizer. Wedge of Doom gets hit by the pulverizer and Gamma Raptor comes in. Gamma Raptor ended up getting hit by the pulverizer as well and one of Wedge of Doom's wheels came off before the time ran out. Gamma Raptor won on a 28-17 judge's decision and Wedge of Doom was eliminated from the tournament.
Wedge of Doom wasn't finished, however, as it participated the lightweight royal rumble at the end of the tournament. It sustained a lot of damage throughout the rumble, where it lost one of its rear wheels in the process. Then Backlash took out part of Wedge of Doom's lexan top with its disc. After Wedge of Doom drove Backlash near the entrance ramp, it went to the center of the arena, and it most likely suffered a big hit from Ziggo, ripping the other rear wheel and the other part of its top completely off. Wedge of Doom couldn't move after that blow and it ultimately lost to Ziggo when the timer ran out.
Due to its seeding, Wedge of Doom was allowed to skip the preliminary rounds of Season 4.0, where it eventually faced Scrap Daddy Surplus. Throughout most of the match, Scrap Daddy Surplus swings its ball and glances off Wedge of Doom. Wedge of Doom tries to get under Scrap Daddy Surplus multiple times, but it couldn't due to its design. Scrap Daddy Surplus gets its chain tangled with Wedge
of Doom's wedge again. Wedge of Doom goes backwards and takes Scrap Daddy Surplus under the pulverizer, but the pulverizer drops to quick and hits Wedge of Doom instead. Both robots started spinning and both robots get untangled. Wedge of Doom winds up with half of its body on the floor and half of its body propped up on the spikestrip. Wedge of Doom drives backwards along the length of the spikestrip with half its wheels up on it. Wedge of Doom reaches the other end of the spikestrip and raises its lifting arm. Scrap Daddy Surplus gets itself next to Wedge of Doom and manages to push it right under the pulverizer. The time ran out and Wedge of Doom won on a close 24-21 judge's decision. Wedge of Doom's next match was against Tentoumushi 7.0 again.
In the beginning of the match, Wedge of Doom rams into Tentoumushi 7.0 multiple times and Tentoumushi 7.0 has its shell all the way up in the air. Wedge of Doom drives straight underneath Tentoumushi 7.0 and delivers another hit. Wedge of Doom starts pushing Tentoumushi 7.0 and Tentoumushi 7.0 tries to smother Wedge of Doom, but Wedge of Doom escapes. Tentoumushi 7.0 gets hit by the killsaws and Wedge of Doom hits Tentoumushi 7.0, then drives itself under the floor spinner. Every time it looks like Tentoumushi 7.0 might smother Wedge of Doom, Wedge of Doom escapes. Even when Tentoumushi 7.0 does get Wedge of Doom completely under the shell, Wedge of Doom was able to break free. Tentoumushi 7.0's shell gets hit by the killsaws and Wedge of Doom gets caught on the killsaws as well. Tentoumushi 7.0 smothers Wedge of Doom and tries to take it to the killsaws. The killsaw pushes the shell upward, the shell lifts, and Wedge of Doom escapes again. Tentoumushi 7.0 drives itself against the arena wall and Wedge of Doom hits Tentoumushi 7.0 again. Wedge of Doom gets under an off-balance Tentoumushi 7.0 and pushes it towards the pulverizer. The pulverizer hits the corner of Tentoumushi 7.0 in the middle of the push and helps Wedge of Doom flip Tentoumushi 7.0 over onto its back. Tentoumushi 7.0 is propped up against the spikestrip next to the entrance ramp and Tentoumushi 7.0 tries to self-right. Wedge of Doom decides to "help" by aiming to push Tentoumushi 7.0 under the pulverizer. It takes a few tries, but Wedge of Doom pushes Tentoumushi 7.0 off the spikes and takes it under the pulverizer. As the pulverizer goes to work, Wedge of Doom does a victory spin and Tentoumushi 7.0 was being counted out. Wedge of Doom won by KO (becoming the first robot to overturn Tentoumushi) and advanced to the quarterfinals, where it faced Ziggo.
Wedge of Doom goes straight at Ziggo, but misses and slams itself into the base of the screw. Ziggo gets up to full speed and starts shaking. While Wedge of Doom moves around the arena, Ziggo goes over the killsaws and gets tossed around. Ziggo flies up the entrance ramp and starts spinning again. Wedge of Doom gets itself oriented and pushes Ziggo further up on the entrance ramp. Wedge of Doom starts to lift Ziggo, but slips out shortly after. Ziggo tries to escape, but Wedge of Doom kept it on the entrance ramp and this prevented Ziggo from spinning. Wedge of Doom backs up to try to slam into Ziggo, but Ziggo started spinning again. When Wedge of Doom approaches, Ziggo smacks the wedge and sends the robot spinning into the arena wall. As Ziggo was unbalanced, Wedge of Doom goes straight at Ziggo and gets itself underneath the spikestrip. Wedge of Doom escapes and gets hit by the pulverizer. Ziggo starts spinning again and hits Wedge of Doom's front. This hit almost flipped Ziggo onto its side and Wedge of Doom's front is bent. Ziggo starts spinning again and head towards Wedge of Doom. Ziggo hits Wedge of Doom slightly and Wedge of Doom tries to line up on Ziggo. Ziggo tries to maneuver itself toward Wedge of Doom's wheels. Ziggo hits Wedge of Doom and rips the wedge right off of Wedge of Doom. Wedge of Doom tries to position its front at Ziggo, but it couldn't and Ziggo smacks the corner of Wedge of Doom, spinning it towards the arena wall again. This impact ripped one of Wedge of Doom's wheels and Tony Buchignani taps out. Ziggo starts slowing down and smoke was coming out of the bottom of Ziggo. Wedge of Doom was being counted out and Ziggo won by another KO. After the match ended, Ziggo's internals were on fire and extinguished immediately. This meant that Wedge of Doom was eliminated again.
Wedge of Doom didn't participated the lightweight royal rumble at the end of the tournament most likely due to damage in its last match against Ziggo.
Due to its seeding, Wedge of Doom was allowed to skip the preliminary rounds of Season 5.0, where it eventually faced Wireless Wonder. Wireless Wonder comes in fast and drives onto Wedge of Doom flipping itself over. Wedge of Doom hits Wireless Wonder two times and Wireless Wonder gets flipped over by the killsaws. Wireless Wonder charges into Wedge of Doom again and nearly flips itself again. The two collide once more with Wireless Wonder taking a small hit from the killsaws. Wireless Wonder takes another shot from the killsaws and almost drives itself into the pulverizer. Wedge of Doom tackles Wireless Wonder who avoids it only to drive itself back into the pulverizer, taking just one hit. The two robots continue bashing each other and in one collision Wireless Wonder flips itself again. Wireless Wonder began fleeing from Wedge of Doom who began pursuit. At one point Wireless Wonder gets hit by the killsaws again. Wireless Wonder nearly drives into a pulverizer again but managed to avoid it. Finally the two engaged in a shoving match. Wedge of Doom won on a 29-16 judge's decision and advanced to the round of 16, where it faced Slap 'Em Silly.
Slap 'Em Silly charged and drives over Wedge of Doom's ramp twice in a row. Wedge of Doom managed to scoop Slap 'Em Silly from the side and crash it into the spikes. Slap 'Em Silly took a small hit from some killsaws and Wedge of Doom scoops it up again and attempted to ram Slap 'Em Silly into the spikes again, but was stopped by the floor-spinner. Slap 'Em Silly kept trying to scoop Wedge of Doom but couldn't and Wedge of Doom managed to bring Slap 'Em Silly into the spikes again. Wedge of Doom then used its lifter as a clamp and grabs Slap 'Em Silly, bringing it to a pulverizer. Wedge of Doom also takes a hit from the ramrods. Wedge of Doom then rams Slap 'Em Silly into the spikes again. Both also take a hit from some killsaws. Wedge of Doom won on a 36-9 judge's decision and advanced to the quarterfinals, where it faced Toe-Crusher. Wedge of Doom won on a close 23-22 judge's decision and advanced to the semifinals, where it faced Code:BLACK.
Wedge of Doom surges into Code:BLACK, keeping Code:BLACK's blade from reaching full speed. Wedge of Doom scoops up Code:BLACK and brings it into the pulverizer. Code:BLACK flees but Wedge of Doom scoops it again and brings it back into the pulverizer. After escaping Code:BLACK again flees but Wedge of Doom pins it on the spikes, then carries Code:BLACK into the screws, then the pulverizer (Wedge of Doom taking a hit itself). Code:BLACK seems to have lost all power as it wasn't trying to escape from the pulverizer. Wedge of Doom won by KO and advanced to the lightweight finals for the first time, where it faced Dr. Inferno Jr.
Wedge of Doom cautiously approaches Dr. Inferno Jr. and Dr. Inferno Jr. tries to get out of the way. Dr. Inferno Jr. gets under one of Wedge of Doom's wedges and tries pushing it around the arena. Both robots were only going in circles and Wedge of Doom backs off. Wedge of Doom charges and gets under Dr. Inferno Jr. Wedge of Doom starts pushing ans Dr. Inferno Jr. backs off again. Dr. Inferno Jr. tries using its rear skirt to get under Wedge of Doom, but only gets caught on its wedge. Wedge of Doom gets under the front of Dr. Inferno Jr. and drives underneath it. Dr. Inferno Jr. lands on the killsaws and Wedge of Doom gets under Dr. Inferno Jr. again, but it just drives underneath it again. Wedge of Doom gets under Dr. Inferno Jr. again and pushes it to the killsaws, but Dr. Inferno Jr. escapes. Wedge of Doom kept getting underneath Dr. Inferno Jr. and both robots got caught on the killsaws. Wedge of Doom gets underneath the front of Dr. Inferno Jr. and pushes it against the spikestrip. Wedge of Doom gets under Dr. Inferno Jr. and tries to push it against the spikestrip again, but couldn't. Dr. Inferno Jr. continues riding on Wedge of Doom's wedge and Wedge of Doom tries to lift it. Dr. Inferno Jr. drives off and nearly gets hit by the pulverizer. Both robots were pushing each other and Dr. Inferno Jr. was able to push Wedge of Doom backwards at one point. Both robots were around the pulverizer and Dr. Inferno Jr's base gets hit by the pulverizer. Dr. Inferno Jr. tries to push Wedge of Doom under the pulverizer, but it just takes another hit from the pulverizer. The left wheels of Wedge of Doom stopped moving and gets under Dr. Inferno Jr. again, but it just slips off. Dr. Inferno Jr. drives up on Wedge of Doom's wedge again and Wedge of Doom starts smoking. Smoke begins to pour out of the left side of Wedge of Doom due to one of its two speed controllers overheating and Dr. Inferno Jr. drives up on Wedge of Doom's wedge again. Wedge of Doom is drifting toward the killsaws and Dr. Inferno Jr. drives up on Wedge of Doom's wedge before the time ran out. Dr. Inferno Jr. won on a close and controversial 23-22 judge's decision and Wedge of Doom was declared the runner-up.
Wedge of Doom couldn't compete in the lightweight royal rumble because the rest of the rumbles were canceled due to an accident with Nightmare during the heavyweight consolation rumble.
