Trinitita was a heavyweight robot designed by Team Nopalito, a group of Mexican engineering students, which applied for BattleBots World Championship VI.

Much like recent versions of Skorpios and SawBlaze, Trinitita was a two-wheel drive bot armed with a large spinning weapon mounted on an overhead arm. It also featured several static wedges to get underneath and hold opponents in place as the hammer saw weapon came down and attacked from above.[1]

A later CAD of Trinitita showed the robot with several pop culture references making up part of its artwork, including Bullet Bill from the Super Mario video game franchise, the shield of Marvel superhero Captain America and the logo of Liga MX soccer team Cruz Azul plastered across the front of the bot. If accepted to compete, these likely would have been removed for BattleBots for copyright reasons, as was the case with Russian competitor Rainbow initially sporting My Little Pony decals and bearing the name "Pinkie Pie".

Trinitita's name likely derives from "trinitite", a name given to the glass-like residue left on the desert floor in New Mexico following a July 1945 nuclear bomb test.

Very little else is known about the robot, but the team withdrew their application from the 2021 season and ultimately would not compete. Progress on Trinitita was made, however, evidenced by posts showing off early construction of its drive system.[2]

Outside of BattleBots, Érick Moreno previously competed several robots including a two-wheel drive vertical spinner.[3] He also built another two-wheel drive bot which sported the logo of his school, though its name, weapon and competition history are not clear.[4]

Trivia[]

  • If able to compete, Trinitita and Team Nopalito would have been the first Mexican representatives in the modern era of BattleBots.
  • According to team member Érick Moreno, Trinitita was female, having referred to the bot as "her" in a 2021 Instagram post.[5]
