Team B.O.B., also known as Russ Robotics and later Team Swamp Thing, are a team which fought in two seasons of Comedy Central BattleBots, as well as the untelevised NPC Charity Open. The team applied for World Championship VII and fought in the untelevised Proving Ground and BattleBots FaceOffs events.
Primarily made up of members of the Russ family from California, most of the team's robots were captained by Wray Russ, though Rick Russ spearheaded heavyweight Final Verdict under the Team B.O.B. name in 2004. B.O.B. was an acronym for Basher of Bots, which carried over into the team name and that of several robots. The team achieved modest success, breaking the lightweight Top 16 with Low Blow in Season 4.0 and getting a televised appearance with Deathstar.
Under the Russ Robotics name, Rick Russ built and led a brand new version of the Hardcore Robotics heavyweight Swamp Thing. He would also built the demonstration robot Jet Lag and competitive heavyweight Hellfire.
Outside BattleBots[]
Team B.O.B. also competed at numerous other events under the name Russ Robotics - notably Steel Conflict in the early 2000s.
Team Members[]
Wray Russ[]
California-based Wray Russ was credited as captain of all but one of Team B.O.B.'s BattleBots entries, which spanned two separate competitions.
Rick Russ[]
Though not credited as part of the team during the Comedy Central seasons according to the now-archived BattleBots website, Rick Russ entered the 2004 NPC Charity Open event with Final Verdict, which made the loser's bracket semi-finals after losing early on to Verbal Abuse, and then again to the same opponent at that stage.
Rick Russ joined Hardcore Robotics and enjoyed years of success alongside Ray Billings as Tombstone debuted in the superheavyweight category, The Mortician competed in numerous middleweight events and heavyweight Last Rites adopted the Tombstone name as BattleBots returned to ABC in 2015. Alongside Billings, Rick Russ won the Giant Nut with Tombstone during World Championship II but departed the team after the 2021 season.
