Surgeon General was a heavyweight robot built by Team Loki, which fought in four seasons of Comedy Central BattleBots as well as the 2009 Pro Championship.

All versions of the robot followed a similar design, being an invertible, two-wheel drive machine with an undercutting horizontal spinner at the front. The Season 2.0 version had a box-shaped chassis with wheel guards, a red and black paint scheme, and a four-toothed disc as the primary weapon, later exchanged in Season 3.0 for a silver finish and a four-bar spinning blade. By this time, Surgeon General's front end was redesigned to include a short wedge shape, which was made shallower and longer for the Season 4.0 incarnation. Season 4.0 also introduced a new black and red paint scheme along with a two-toothed flywheel, replaced in Season 5.0 and the 2009 Championships with an even larger variant. The design of later incarnations also enabled Team Loki to start matches with Surgeon General placed upside-down, depending on which opponents it would face.

Following progressive improvements to its design, Surgeon General became known for having one of the most powerful spinning weapons of the Comedy Central run. The Season 4.0 incarnation in particular proved especially successful, reaching the heavyweight semi-finals after causing severe damage to three of its opponents with its disc. In all other appearances during this era, Surgeon General either finished in the Round of 16 (Seasons 3.0 and 5.0) or the Round of 32 (Season 2.0). Surgeon General was one of Team Loki's most successful robots, along with their superheavyweight Rammstein, and lightweight full-body spinner Afterburner.

Builder and driver Julio Roqueta sadly passed away after being struck by a car on June 19, 2005.

Surgeon General returned for the 2009 Pro Championship with a new team line-up, including Alex Espinosa, who would eventually join the Icewave team for the Discovery BattleBots run. Despite its age, it performed competitively enough to reach the late stages of the winner's bracket, before losing to Brutality and Root Canal respectively. Thus, it finished its final BattleBots tournament with a 3-2 record.[4][5]

Outside of BattleBots, Surgeon General also competed at the 2003 Robocide event, achieving a 2-2 match record, its final known appearance prior to Roqueta's death.[6]

Comedy Central Season 2.0[]

Surgeon General vs. Nightmare

Surgeongeneralvsnightmare 1

Surgeon General gets hit by Nightmare.

Like most other heavyweights that entered Season 2.0, Surgeon General received a first-round bye due to the lack of entrants.[7][8] This put it into the Round of 32 against the feared Nightmare. At the start of the match, both Nightmare and Surgeon General spun up their weapons and approached each other. Surgeon General stopped, and attempted to come around the side of Nightmare, but Nightmare turned instinctively into Surgeon General and the spinning discs crashed together in a spectacular hit with deafening noise, sending Surgeon General flying into the air. After the impact, it was revealed that Nightmare had destroyed Surgeon General's disc, with pieces raining down on the BattleBox floor. The top half of Surgeon General had also been peeled back. Surgeon General, weaponless now, moved around to the side of Nightmare, where it proceeded to attempt to push Nightmare towards an arena hazard, Nightmare pushed back. Later on in the match, Surgeon General backed over the killsaws, and the remainder of the match involved the 2 robots pushing each other around. The match went to a judges' decision, with Nightmare winning 30-15. This knocked Surgeon General out of the competition.

Heavyweight Consolation Rumble

Surgeon General was also among the robots competing in the end-of-season Heavyweight Consolation Rumble. Its disc broke early on though and was only able to ram robots such as Mauler and Bender, but managed to flip OverKill, rendering its knife blade useless. Surgeon General survived the rumble but lost to Punjar and OverKill.

Comedy Central Season 3.0[]

Surgeon General vs. Mjollnir

Due to its seeding, Surgeon General was allowed to skip the preliminary rounds of Season 3.0, where it eventually faced Mjollnir. In the match, Surgeon General spun up its disc and hit Mjollnir, removing its wheel in the process. Surgeon General did more damage to Mjollnir until it was counted out. Surgeon General advanced to the Round of 32 where it fought the yellow and black wedge of KillerB.

Surgeon General vs. KillerB

It was a quick match as Surgeon General hit the corner of KillerB and penetrated its armor, ripping the batteries out of it and rendering it motionless. KillerB was counted out and Surgeon General advanced to the Round of 16, where it faced MechaVore.

Surgeon General vs. MechaVore

Both robots started hitting each other with their discs, but Surgeon General's armor wasn't strong enough to stand up to MechaVore's disc. MechaVore ripped two large gashes into Surgeon General's armor and Surgeon General suddenly stopped moving. MechaVore had hit some internal components that made Surgeon General immobile. Surgeon General was being counted out and MechaVore won by KO. This meant that Surgeon General was eliminated from the tournament again.

Surgeon General was unable to return for the post-season rumbles due to damage sustained from fighting MechaVore.

Comedy Central Season 4.0[]

Surgeon General vs. FrostBite

As in the previous season, Surgeon General was once again seeded and allowed to bypass the preliminary rounds of the Season 4.0 heavyweight division. Its season debut took place in the televised Round of 32, where it fought Team Toad and FrostBite. This match was the first of four to be aired in Episode 5 of this season.

"Builder Julio Roqueta says that spinning blade has enough power to end this fight in one hit."
Tim Green unintentionally prophesizes the match outcome

Both robots approached each other tentatively from each side of the BattleBox, with Surgeon General starting from the red square. Surgeon General weaved and repeatedly dodged FrostBite as the latter tried to line up an attack with its own threshing drum. Its persistent evasion prompted some members of the audience to boo loudly, at which point Julio Roqueta's machine turned into FrostBite from the front-right corner.

The aftermath between Surgeon General and FrostBite.

A violent impact ripped Surgeon General's flywheel clean off, the weapon reaching a reported height of 4ftCitation? and spinning on its axle in various places across the BattleBox. While it was now completely weaponless, greater damage had been inflicted to FrostBite, which was now missing both of its right wheels. Surgeon General clambered over the top of FrostBite, then, after driving around from the side, got itself high-centered on the chassis of Michael Mauldin's machine. Neither robot could pull free for several seconds, with FrostBite's left drive chain slacking and jumping from its sprockets.

"It's the new killsaw!"
Bil Dwyer quips about Surgeon General's detached spinner

Despite both machines effectively being stuck together, Bil Dwyer observed that Surgeon General's wheels still had full movement. At last, it pulled clear of FrostBite, spinning and weaving before repeatedly slamming the latter back towards the blue square. These movements ended with Surgeon General pushing FrostBite over the edge of the killsaws, and giving it a further push before performing a victory spin in the BattleBox center. Surgeon General was awarded the win via a brutal knockout.

Carmen Electra: "So how did you do it?"
Julio Roqueta: "Well, at first we were just dancing around a lot and... tryin' to avoid each other's weapons. But finally, I got one good hit..."

Surgeon General vs. KillerHurtz

Surgeon General advanced to the Round of 16, facing UK veteran and Long Beach 1999 runner-up KillerHurtz.

Both robots went straight at each other and Surgeon General hits the right front of KillerHurtz. Surgeon General and its disc came to a halt as its receiver, which hadn't been securely seated, came loose. About 5 seconds later, Surgeon General and its disc started moving again and ripped into the right side of KillerHurtz, with CO2 venting out of KillerHurtz. Surgeon General took another hit on the left side of KillerHurtz, ripping off one of its drive wheels. KillerHurtz was no longer mobile and was being counted out by the ref. Surgeon General won by KO and it advanced to the quarter-finals, where it was put up against HexaDecimator.

The match started out with Surgeon General ripping off the weakened section of HexaDecimator's front armor. HexaDecimator got underneath Surgeon General and flipped it onto its rear end. Surgeon General was being counted out and Surgeon General tried starting and stopping its spinning disc weapon. Surgeon General was also going forward and reverse in hopes of rocking itself back on its feet. About 25 seconds into the countdown, Surgeon General managed to get itself back on its feet. As the fight continued, HexaDecimator quickly lost maneuverability due to metal chips from its armor getting stuck in the motor controller electronics and shorting it out after the internal controller cover had been knocked off. Surgeon General ripped into the rear of HexaDecimator, cutting right through its titanium armor. Surgeon General then hit one of HexaDecimator's air tanks, breaking it off and causing it to explode. This blew the valve right out of HexaDecimator and Surgeon General got its disc into the speed controller. HexaDecimator stopped moving and was being counted out. Surgeon General won by KO and advanced to the semi-finals, where it faced OverKill.

Towards the start of the fight, both robots were dancing around each other and Surgeon General got a hit on OverKill's left wheel. Surgeon General hits the same wheel again and later hits the rear of OverKill. OverKill got itself caught on the killsaws and later got itself flipped by Surgeon General's spinning disc. After Surgeon General hits OverKill's right wheel, Surgeon General got its spinning disc right into the blade of OverKill and it suddenly stopped moving. Surgeon General was being counted out and OverKill advanced to the heavyweight finals. Despite the damage delivered to OverKill, Surgeon General was eliminated from the tournament.

Comedy Central Season 5.0[]

Surgeon General vs. Spitfire

After receiving several upgrades, such as a new disc with thinner teeth and the fact it was seeded from its previous performances, was able to skip to the Round of 32 against Spitfire. Surgeon General used its new disc to heavy effect in this match, causing severe damage to Spitfire by tearing into its shell in multiple places and even being able to rip out one of Spitfire's wheels. Surgeon General won by KO after absolutely demolishing Spitfire and moved on to the Round of 16 against Aces and Eights.

Surgeon General vs. Aces and Eights

Aces and Eights vs Surgeon General

Surgeon General hits Aces & Eights, sending sparks flying.

At the start of the fight, Aces and Eights hit Surgeon General straight on, causing a shower of sparks. It did not cause much damage however, and Aces and Eights got behind Surgeon General and rammed it into the spike strip, stopping its disc. Aces and Eights then held Surgeon General at the wall and kept pushing it, until eventually it pulled away from the wall. At this point, Surgeon General could not bring its disc back up to speed again, and Aces and Eights pushed it over the killsaws, scoring points. Aces and Eights then continued to have its way with Surgeon General, ramming it into a spike strip corner next to the pulverizer, which struck down and hit Surgeon General on its rear. As its drive motors began to burn out, Surgeon General looked dead as Aces and Eights charged at it once more, almost upending it against the Lexan. Aces and Eights had dominated this fight and won by a 35-10 decision, eliminating Surgeon General from the competition.

Pro Championship 2009[]

Surgeon General vs. The Black Knight

After a seven-year absence following the cancelation of the Comedy Central series, Surgeon General returned for the 2009 BattleBots Pro Championship. Initially, it fought The Black Knight in the main Winner's Bracket, winning by knockout after 21 seconds according to official match records.[4][5]

Surgeon General vs. Agent X

Surgeon General next faced Agent X, an invertible flipper built by Team X-Bots. Again, it won by knockout, though official BattleBots records indicate that both machines fought for the whole three minutes.[4][5]

Surgeon General vs. Emily

This succession of victories allowed Surgeon General to fight a rival horizontal spinner in the form of Team Moon's Emily. Official records suggest that the match lasted 36 seconds and went to a judges' decision, with Surgeon General again being declared the winner.[4][5] However, it reportedly took serious damage to its armor and weapon in the process, requiring substantial repairs from Team Loki before its next match.Citation?

Surgeon General vs. Brutality

Surgeon General takes a hit from Brutality.

Surgeon General was next drawn against another horizontal spinner, this being Aptyx Designs' Brutality. Due to the extent of the damage previously sustained, Team Loki could not repair the disc in time for the match, leaving the former semi-finalist without a functioning weapon. In spite of this handicap, Surgeon General sped out of the blue square and into the front of Brutality, only for Brutality's bar to clip its front panel and send it spinning away. The impact left Surgeon General partially immobilized, with Brutality proceeding to cause further damage to its front end with more head-on blows. Surgeon General kept moving on its still-active left wheel before stopping in the center of the BattleBox, at which point Team Loki tapped out after only eight seconds. This marked the joint-quickest match of the entire Pro Championship tournament alongside Stinger: The Killer Bee vs Bender, with Surgeon General deemed to have lost by knockout.[4][5]

Surgeon General vs. Root Canal (Loser's Bracket)

Now relegated to the Loser's Bracket, Surgeon General faced Mutant Robots' 220lb version of Root Canal in a bid to remain in the competition. In a match recorded to have lasted one minute and 16 seconds, the Team Loki machine was ruled to have lost on the subsequent judges' decision. Surgeon General was therefore eliminated from the 2009 Pro Championship with a 3-2 match record, concluding its final BattleBots event.[4][5]
