- — Ciruclar Robotics on the theme behind Square
Square is a heavyweight robot designed by Mir(A) Engineering (formerly Ciruclar Robotics) for a future BattleBots competition. The team also expressed interest in converting the design to a ShowBot for the live show, BattleBots: Destruct-A-Thon.[1] The team previously applied for World Championship VIII with Proud Mary.
Described as a "hypermodular" robot, its primary configurations consist of vertical and horizontal modules arranged in an L-shape. Each primary configuration consists of two drive modules and a weapon module, forming its L-shape. The robot bears similarity to Valkyrie in its undercutter configuration, however its wheels are not aligned with the spinner forward, instead in line or perpendicular. The robot contains a standard X-pattern bolt configuration which allows its hypermodularity, as theoretically with the right module configuration, any design could be achieved. This also allows each module to rotate by any multiple of 90 degrees. The robot's frame consists of braced 5" x 5" steel plate. Square's horizontal module would typically spin a 48" diameter steel bar, while the vertical weapon would spin a 7" diameter drum. Each module would contain its own batteries, switches, motors any anything else a robot would need, similar to Red Devil.
Square is themed after a carpenters square, hence its name. The team also themed the robot and its attachments after measuring in general, its main bar being named Ruler, and the main vertical drum being called Tape Measure. The team also plan to have a minibot similar to Ace named Level. The team also expressed the need for some redesign before full application in order to remove some of the billet construction used in the weapon modules.
Trivia[]
- The team would post a series of joke configurations to Reddit in mid-September, highlighting the configurability of the robot.
- The team's reasoning behind pitching the robot as a showbot candidate is due to its unique design, configurability and relatively low cost per module after some redesign.
- Square was initially mocked up in the video game Robot Arena 2.
