Not to be confused with World Championship V, which aired in 2020 on Discovery and discovery+, and is often also marketed as Season 5.
Season 5.0 was the fifth televised season of BattleBots. It was the last of three seasons filmed at Treasure Island in San Francisco, and the final season of BattleBots to air on the Comedy Central network before its near thirteen-year absence from television screens.
Rules on walkerbots, shufflebots and changes to weight boundaries outside of that were upheld for Season 5.0. Also introduced for this season was BattleAnts - an untelevised bracket fought in a purpose-built arena between robots weighing up to 1lb.
Weight Class | Type of Robot | |
---|---|---|
Wheeled Robots | Walkers | |
BattleAnts | ≤1lb | +20%Citation? |
Lightweight | >25lbs - ≤60lbs | +20% |
Middleweight | >60lbs - ≤120lbs | |
Heavyweight | >120lbs - ≤220lbs | |
Superheavyweight | >220lbs - ≤340lbs |
In the lightweight vision, No.1 pre-tournament seed Ziggo bowed out early as Dr. Inferno Jr. defeated Wedge of Doom in the final. Hazard's dominant streak looked to continue for a third successive season, but Team Delta's middleweight was defeated by T-Minus in the semi-finals, who defeated S.O.B. to earn the middleweight championship for the first time. BioHazard was the only champion able to defend their title, going undefeated during the season again and gaining revenge on Voltronic in the title decider. Toro was unable to replicate its Season 4.0 success, or that of the team's middleweight, as it crashed out in its very first match to Phrizbee-Ultimate. Donald Hutson and Diesector earned a second Giant Nut, replicating its Season 2.0 form to defeat Vladiator in the final.
For the unaired BattleAnts division, Pete Abrahamson's Oishi finished runner-up to Derek Young and Hoser'd.
Seedings[]
For this season, the Top 30 robots were given seedings in their respective weight divisions. Rather than determine which bots would skip the preliminary rounds based on a previous win total, this was now done by win percentage from the three previous seasons. The Top 24 seeds of each class were given an initial first round bye. In the case of any unexpected or last minute withdrawals, the next highest ranked robot in the Top 30 would replace it, and every other robot would move up one seed.

BattleAnts[]

Several competitors in the BattleAnts arena.
This season was the only competition to also feature an official 1lb class, called BattleAnts. Unlike the main tournaments, the BattleAnts event was invite-only, consisting of sixteen robots in total and was made in collaboration with Chris Williamson of South Eastern Combat Robotics (S.E.C.R.). Another key member in the production of this event was S.E.C.R. founding member Marc DeVidts, whose company UI Productions was advertised on the arena floor.
These robots were too small to compete in the regular BattleBox, so an arena was made by Brett Dawson and ran by Peter Abrahamson, to accommodate them, even featuring a scaled-down Killsaw hazard and spikes around the outside. BattleAnts was judged by the eventual founder of RoboGames, Dave Calkins.[11]

Only a handful of fights from the BattleAnts bracket are known, largely thanks to the reports from Team Toad.[12]
Derek Young and Hoser'd won overall, defeating Pete Abrahamson's Oishi in the bracket final. A minimum of five robots fought in an end of competition rumble, with the winner unknown.

MowBee lost in Round 1, but its opponent is not known. It is possible that either it was beaten by another robot we know advanced to the quarter-finals, such as finalists Hoser'd and Oishi, but this is unconfirmed. Gefahr's first round opponent is also unknown, and as it won the fight, there is a possibility Gefahr took on MowBee.
Due to other known results, three of Angry Ant, Micro frenZy, Whirlpool and Little Killer lost in Round 1. Whichever robot did not lost in the quarter-finals because none of these four robots advanced to the semi-finals.
Tsunami and LB both lost in the quarter-finals, and they must have fought Oishi or Hoser'd as other quarter-final fights are accounted for. As Oishi and Hoser'd advanced to the final, Tsunami and LB would have lost their respective fights, no matter the opponent.
Hoser'd also defeated Angry Ant according to a 2002 Delphiforums post, but it is again not known what stage of the bracket this fight occurred.[13]
The same series of posts suggests Caution was defeated as a "flipper put him on his head", but does not state the opponent it lost to. However, as the fights of the only other robot with lifting or flipping weaponry, Gnat, are known in full, the opponent in question must have been LB.[13]
Trivia[]
- In three exhibition matches, presenter Bil Dwyer competed with a middleweight robot called Evil Cheese Wedge.
- Season 5.0 was the only competition to feature 1lb BattleAnts robots.
