Sawborg Destructo is a heavyweight robot by Carnage Robotics which was built with the intention of comepting in BattleBots World Championship VII.
It is the latest in Sean Irvin's line of Destructo robots having last competed with Ultimo Destructo in World Championship II and III in 2016 and 2018 respectively. He also fought with Techno Destructo and Pentazmo Destructo during the Comedy Central era of BattleBots.
The robot's name derives from lore surrounding the American heavy metal band Gwar, with 'Sawborg Destructo' being the stage name of co-lead vocalist Matt Maguire. 'Techno Destructo' was the name of former band member Hunter Jackson. The only 'Destructo' robot not to follow this etymology was Pentazmo Destructo, whose name derived from its five-pointed star machined into its spinning disk.[1]
Carnage Robotics teased plans to build a new heavyweight in 2022, though very little information came following its initial announcement.[2] In July 2024, Carnage Robotics unveiled their design for Sawborg Destructo in the form of CAD renders. Sawborg Destructo is a four-wheel drive robot with its front two wheels considerably larger than the rear two. At the front of the robot are two twin-toothed disk spinners angled at 45-degree angles to form a V shape at the front, similar in appearance to US insectweight competitor Twinzer.
As stated in post from Irvin, the design has been refined over a long period of time. The team hopes to do weapon and drive tests before fabricating the full machine in hopes of having it fight at BattleBots Proving Ground.
