Sabretooth was a heavyweight robot built by Team Legion, which applied for BattleBots World Championship VI, as well as World Championship VII.
Originally built by British competitor Gabriel Stroud, Sabretooth is the name given to a series of robots spanning over twenty years in total. The most recent version is four-wheel drive, relying on its agility and weapon power to overcome opponents. It retains its yellow color, which has been everpresent in all editions of Sabretooth. Its primary weapon is a unique asymmetric vertical spinner shaped like the head of a saber-toothed cat, hence the robot's name.
The robot first debuted in Series 5 of Robot Wars in 2001, looking wildly different to its current iteration, but lost its only battle. Sabretooth returned in the following series, but suffered another early exit at the hands of John Reid's Terrorhurtz. Ironically, Gabriel Stroud and John Reid would later join forces eighteen years later with Beta, entering World Championship V of BattleBots in 2020.
When Robot Wars returned in 2016, Gabriel Stroud applied with a heavily-upgraded Sabretooth machine. However, it again lost in its first round fight, and Team Legion's 15-year wait for a televised win continued. Sabretooth returned in Series 9 and 10 of Robot Wars with greater success, reaching a heat final and the 10-robot rumble in its last two campaigns, earning revenge against John Reid in the process.
In July 2021, Gabriel Stroud confirmed Team Legion had applied for World Championship VI of BattleBots with a new version of Sabretooth.[1] He would again team up with Robert Pickford and Alan Cannon, who had teamed up with Gabriel Stroud during much of Sabretooth's time on Robot Wars, the latter also assisting with Beta in 2020.
This iteration of the machine competed as Rhino in the second series of King of Bots under Robert Pickford's guidance, but was painted yellow and given new weaponry for BattleBots.
However, due to the team's Visas not being accepted in time for filming, Sabretooth had to withdraw from the competition, as was the case with every other UK competitor accepted for the 2021 competition. Team Legion reapplied in 2022, but were not accepted. Team member Robert Pickford would, however, compete with Team Robo Challenge and Quantum.
