- "25 teams from East Coast high schools and colleges competed in “The Rumble at the Rock,” a combat robot competition under the aegis of BotsIQ, a high school and college robotics education program based on the Comedy Central show “BattleBots.”"
- — A 2008 news article describes Rumble At The Rock[1]
Rumble at the Rock, colloquially abbreviated to R@TR and originally known as the BotsIQ Boston Regional, was an annual tournament for 15lb robots sanctioned by BattleBots and BotsIQ. As multiple events could happen in a calendar year, events were numbered to identify them.
Held in the BotsIQ off-season, a minimum of three events took place beginning in 2007. The events were held in Boston, Massachusetts and hosted by Plymouth North High School. They served as a regional competition for high school and college teams and fed into the national tournament later in the year.
Events followed the same ruleset as national BattleBots IQ competitions, with three-minute bouts held. The competitions followed a double-elimination format, as was the case with BattleBots IQ events, and features a winner's and loser's bracket.
The traditionally square BotsIQ event was not used for these events, with a black, octagonal arena with red and blue starting squares designed and built by students of Plymouth North High School instead. Miami. Entergy Corp. helped to fund the arena's construction, and it was used throughout every Rumble at the Rock event.[2] The arena lacked any of the hazards seen in the BattleBox, including the screws, pulverizers and killsaws.
According to Team Titanium Knights, at least five Rumble at the Rock events were held, with their robot UKnight winning the fifth outright.[3]
Outside BattleBots[]
Rumble at the Rock was originally the name given to the first FRC offseason event, which was hosted by Plymouth North High School. It started as an unnoficial event hosted in the Plymouth North parking lot in 1996[4]. It grew over the following years to an official offseason event for the FRC robots. It would continue until the 1999 season, having run four events after Plymouth Norths FRC team left for other engineering competitions[5]
Rumble at the Rock 1[]
The inaugural Rumble at the Rock event took place on December 1, 2007, eight months after the 2007 BattleBots IQ event. It was organized by Plymouth North High School teacher Michael Bastoni, who had been involved in middleweight entries since BattleBots IQ 2002. R@TR - also known as the BotsIQ Boston Regional - saw a total of 25 robots compete.[6] Good Knight won this event, with second and third place unknown.
