Not to be confused with the heavyweight robot from Season 3.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots which was renamed Ripper V2 for Season 5.0.

Ripper is a heavyweight competitor built by John Findlay of Team Roaming Robots, which applied for BattleBots World Championship III and World Championship V.

A staple on the British heavyweight live scene, Ripper is a two-wheel drive robot armed with a high-pressure pneumatic flipper. sporting a distinctive yellow and green color scheme. It is armored in 3.2mm HARDOX, a material used commonly in the UK in 110kg and lower weight class bots, but not seen so often in BattleBots and other local events. That said, examples of HARDOX usage in the show include the 1" frame pieces holding the weapon system of Copperhead, various armor pieces on Petunia and End Game's discs.

Team Roaming Robots have over twenty years of experience in combat robotics with different variations of Ripper. Despite their pedigree, however, Ripper was not selected for the 2018 season of BattleBots.

A new version of Ripper was built with Team Roaming Robots accepted for the 2020 season, but due to travel restrictions relating to COVID-19, filming was postponed and Ripper was forced to drop out. The team are not known to have applied to BattleBots since international travel bans to the United States relaxed.

Away from BattleBots, Ripper originally competed in Series 7 of Robot Wars, reaching the Heat Final stage before losing to three-time Grand Finalist Firestorm 5. It also finished runner-up in the Annihilator during the same series to Kan-Opener, with a scaled-down version, Rip, also emerging as a finalist in the Series 7 Featherweight Championship.

In the early-2000s, John Findlay formed Roaming Robots, an entertainment company which has run several live events in the United Kingdom under various names, including the current Extreme Robots brand. Between 2013 and 2016, Roaming Robots obtained the rights to use the Robot Wars brand name for live tours, a circumstance which lead to Findlay not being "allowed" to compete with Ripper in the televised revival series debuting in 2016.

Ripper 2023

John Findlay also competed in Chinese robot combat show Clash Bots in May 2018, but lost in their one and only fight with Ripper. He also drove a two-wheeled crusher called Sparta, which bore a strong resemblance to BattleBots competitor Mohawk. Though the robot was not built by the team, Sparta even went as far as to include bristles across the top of the crusher. Like Ripper, Sparta lost its one and only battle on the show, in a 2v2 team battle alongside Findlay's other creation Smasher, which was a renamed version of his six-wheel drive front-hinge flipper Cyclone, driven by long-time competitor Peter Redmond on the show.

A brand new Ripper build was commissioned by Adam Hamilton of Team Immersion in 2023, who assisted with the manufacturing of Big Dill ahead of World Championship VII. Built for John Findlay's Extreme Robots live show, Ripper now features hinged wedgelets and HDPE plastic ablative armor, while largely retaining its color scheme and body shape. In October 2023, it competed at RoboRiots where it took on 2019 season BattleBots competitor Jasper. This version of Ripper would later be given an axe mechanism and dubbed Axel.
