Rescue is a heavyweight robot from the School for Entrepreneurship and Technology also known as SET High School, which competed in BattleBots Proving Ground as part of the Destruct-A-Thon live show.[1]

It is a four-wheel drive, box-shaped robot armed with a belt-driven drum spinner. Weighing 37lbs and spinning at around 109mph[2], the main drum is constructed of a small diameter titanium tube with several other spikes attached around it made of Waspaloy, a nickel-based alloy. Videos have shown the drum also spinning downwards, implying it can correct itself when flipped over. Rescue Force is also invertible by design[3], and the main robot is accompanied by a small, four-wheeled minibot with a sheet metal front wedge.

The robot was already constructed by October 2023, with additional upgrades made over the following year. Uniquely, the robot's chassis is constructed primarily of bonded urethane with Kevlar fibers embedded. According to JP Montello, it took eleven gallons of urethane to cast Rescue Force's chassis. An update from around October 2024 stated that titanium forks were also planned to be made.[4] A further update in November revealed new top armor had been created, with plans for a new drum more akin to Minotaur.[5] A January 10, 2025 update had the team confirming they were scheduled to compete in Proving Ground on January 25 and 26.[6] Rescue Force first fought OverKill before taking on JackPot, as confirmed by crew member Kaz Church[7], where it finished with a 1-1 record overall.

Rescue Force vs. OverKill

Rescue Force first took on OverKill on January 25, 2025.

As Rescue Force was quick to approach OverKill, the ShowBot veered right before colliding. OverKill turned, allowing Rescue Force to cause minor damage as it rode up the wedge before retreating. With its weapon active, Rescue Force maneuvered over to OverKill, but its spinning row of spikes was halted on impact with the ShowBot.

Rescue Force tried to target the exposed wheels of OverKill, which struggled to get its Rambo blade into action due to its opponent being the speedier of the pair. Though the primary weapon of the rookie was only working intermittently, Rescue Force used its maneuverability to corner OverKill, inadvertently running into its own minibot, which had been a non-factor up to this point in the battle.

As OverKill got to the flank of Rescue Force, it struggled to move the four-wheeled bot and resorted to chasing it back toward the center of the BattleBox. The ShowBot then drove fully underneath Rescue Force, which had lost one of its rear spikes, and pushed it across the arena and into the housing for the blue square screws.

Rescue Force was then positioned against the arena hazard before falling back onto its wheels as the fight approached the 1:30 mark. JP Montello's' heavyweight got its weapon up to speed again, though it struggled for reach and the ShowBot was able to control it again near the screws. Using its knife, OverKill reversed Rescue Force into the short corner and then the Upper Deck.

Now in the final minute of the battle, OverKill struck the Upper Deck with its blade and soon after, Rescue Force chewed up its opponent's tires, leaving it hobbling in the final moments.

OverKill again failed to land a blow with its weapon as it drove away. Rescue Force gave chase, launching itself across the wedge of OverKill.

As the pair tussled late on, Rescue Force suddenly stopped moving and was smoking. Rescue Force was declared the winner in spite of this by crowd vote.

Rescue Force vs. JackPot

Rescue Force then fought JackPot on January 26. Ahead of the fight, Rescue Force's team were experiencing issues with the weapon speed controller, so they installed a DC motor instead to enter with a functional active weapon.[8]

Quick to exit its square, Rescue Force darted towards JackPot but missed and slid into the side of the arena. The rookie bot quickly recovered, driving head-on at JackPot and halting its dual disks before becoming high-centered on top of JackPot's minibot, Ace.

This allowed JackPot an opportunity to land a shot, but Rescue Force's urethane armor absorbed the impact and JP Montello's machine pushed the former Golden Bolt qualifier back into the screws. Jeff Waters' robot retaliated by shoving Rescue Force back on top of Ace, spinning its weapon back up and landing a blow which peeled up its top plate.

JackPot raised its lifter, initiating several weapon-on-weapon blows which favored the Las Vegas-based team. The pair battled near the drivers' booths, where JackPot was able to carve into the front armor of Rescue Force and get it stuck again on top of Ace. This teed it up for a side assault from JackPot, which sliced into the flank of Rescue Force.

Rescue Force remained aggressive, however, again pushing back and getting underneath JackPot. With the weight of its opponent pressing down on the front, this forced Rescue Force's rear wheels off the floor though and prevented it from capitalizing on this. Though its weapon was not consistently running, Rescue Force was able to push JackPot from its right side.

The pair met head-on once more, and although Rescue Force appeared undeterred at first, one last attack to the flank chewed up more of the urethane chassis and knocked Rescue Force out cold. Ace maneuvered to its rear as JackPot attacked from the front, driving both its opponent and Ace to the screws of the Upper Deck.

While its weapon was still rotating slowly, Rescue Force could no longer drive and was counted out. It therefore ended Proving Ground with a 1-1 record.
