REDRUM was a heavyweight robot built by Team Entropy which competed at the BattleBots Rochester Robot Rampage event.
It was a silver-colored robot with two different sets of wheels on the front, along with wheels on the top of the robot to allow it to drive inverted. Built by Dave Northup, who previously competed in Comedy Central BattleBots with Kegerator, REDRUM was armed with a large, red, engine-powered drum spinner. Its weapon was custom-made from a 14" diameter drum, with 3.5" teeth protruding from either side. It only won one match against Big Betty by forfeit, but was still able to make the final of the loser's bracket.
Despite this REDRUM proved to be a crowd favorite due to its relatively large weapon and its tendency to gyro-dance when turning. The robot's name stems both from its red drum weapon and its name being "murder" backwards, a possible reference to a scene from the famous 1980s horror movie The Shining.
In 2016, a photo surfaced on Reddit of REDRUM still in the team's possession. Its drum had been removed from the otherwise complete robot.
Outside BattleBots[]
Outside of BattleBots competitions, REDRUM competed in the RFL as early as 2003, where it fought opponents Tornado Mer, Shrederator and Conquering Clown. It became the event runner-up in Battle Beach 3, and the winner of the third North Carolina Robot Street Fight.
Team Entropy and REDRUM were invited to take part in the 2004 FRA World Championship event held in the United Kingdom. REDRUM was set to face British front-hinged flipper Taurus, but the event was ultimately canceled and would not go ahead.[1] Its final documented event came in the October 2007 Mecha Mayhem competition. However, it is not known how well REDRUM performed.
