Not to be confused with the incomplete heavyweight of the same name which intended to enter Season 5.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots.
Quasar was a 15lb robot built by University of South Florida students of the Robotics Interest Group, often abbreviated to RIG, which competed in the 2009 BattleBots IQ event.
It was a round, black robot armed with a spinning shell fitted with two teeth on either side. Although Quasar had a modest showing in the main competition, it won a three-way rumble against fellow shell spinners The Dethinator and Tornado Mini.
The team later competed in National Robotics League events with a vertical spinner called The Brain. USF RIG president Sam McAmis[1] would later captain Team Gruff, entering his titular 250lb [[Gruff|heavyweight robot]] into future televised seasons of BattleBots on Discovery.

Quasar vs. Timothy Higgins Now in the loser's bracket, Quasar faced off against Timothy Higgins. Quasar won this fight, but did not receive any more battles for unknown reasons. |
Mini Class Rumble Quasar returned for a four-way rumble against The Dethinator , Blender Mini and Tornado Mini in the larger, 120lb scale arena. After a strong start, Quasar was overturned and left spinning in the corner of the arena. Tornado Mini and Blender Mini were left to fight it out, but Blender Mini was flipped over by the hellraiser. As Tornado Mini and The Dethinator both ground to a halt, Quasar was revealed to have righted itself, and proved functionality as the last robot remaining. As such, it won the rumble.[2] |
Mini Class Rumble Quasar appeared again for a three-way rumble against The Dethinator and Tornado Mini. Quasar began in the center of the arena and delivered a shot to The Dethinator before ricocheting off the arena wall after an exchange with Tornado Mini. The Dethinator appeared to grind to a halt and Quasar's shell was no longer spinning either. However, Tornado Mini's overhead bar had bent upwards, meaning it too was unable to use its primary weapon. Quasar rammed into The Dethinator , who was arcing around the blue square on one wheel. Tornado Mini attempted to spin up again, but could not cause any damage and was eventually immobilized as Quasar remained aggressive and won the rumble overall.[3] |
