Purple Pain was a heavyweight robot designed by Purple Pain Robotics with the intention of competing in BattleBots World Championship VI.
It was a six-wheel drive robot with a steep shovel attached to a pair of lifting arms with a 360° range of motion, similar in design to the 2019 version of Hal Rucker's DUCK!. As the name suggests, Purple Pain follows a black and purple color scheme, and according to the team behind it, it was inspired by Jim Smentowski's Breaker Box as well as Robot Wars competitor Shockwave.[1] Purple Pain had two large motors powering its six wheels via chain drive, in a similar vein to its lifting mechanism. As of the time of their BattleBots application, Purple Pain had been in the CAD stage for four years with team captain Drayton tinkering with its design before finally applying for the show.
In May 2021, however, the team confirmed that they had been rejected ahead of World Championship VI, believing their design was not impressive enough for the show.[2] In response, they promised to redesign Purple Pain to make it more interesting for World Championship VII. Though the intended changes are largely unknown, Purple Pain Robotics revealed it would feature a retro color scheme.
- "Honestly, the design of the original robot was just too plain, if not slightly underdeveloped. There have already been some major changes fueled by our unfortunate decline to Battlebots, so maybe getting declined isn't so terrible after all."
- — The team behind Purple Pain state their intentions to redesign ahead of future seasons.[3]
Delivering on their promise, Purple Pain Robotics reapplied with a brand new design called Diamond-Back.
Trivia[]
- Purple Pain shares its name with the lighter 45lb drum of Malice, who debuted in the 2020 BattleBots season.
- Team captain Drayton von Zollars' side business involves repairing robots, and as such, he has amassed over 200 robots in total.
