Plan X was a heavyweight robot which participated exclusively in BattleBots World Championship I. It was built by Mike and Lisa Winter of the Robot Action League, who were previously known for creating fan favorite Tentoumushi.

Plan X was a four-wheel drive robot modeled to look like a 1950s-style spaceship, characterized by an external 'titanium pillow' structure surrounding its low box-shaped chassis. Its main armament consisted of a pair of interchangeable vertical spinners (including hollow and solid bars), each with a tip speed of 350mph, and a set of interchangeable secondary weapons at the rear. The latter included a pneumatically-powered device designed to fend off spinners, and a wedge intended to press the entire robot against the BattleBox floor. The robot also fought with two minibots which were equipped with a wedge and two small thwack arms respectively.

The most unique feature of Plan X was its 'brain', which, according to Mike Winter, was intended to display the 'emotional state' of the robot as it fought. This was achieved through the use of multicolored LED lights and a number of sensors located within the main robot. When in a neutral state, the brain was illuminated by pulsating light blue and purple lights; upon being bumped or damaged, the LEDs would flash red in a faster and more aggressive pattern. This gave the impression that Plan X was responding negatively to attacks from opponents. A green light sequence was also demonstrated in the robot's VT segment, humorously confirming to Lisa Winter that Robot Action League were going to win the competition.

In its only season, Plan X started strongly with a victory against Wrecks, receiving the judges' decision on aggression despite sustaining late damage to its titanium pillow armor. This enabled it to reach the Round of 16 where it was flipped and heavily damaged by Bronco.

Lisa Winter returned with Mega Tento for the 2016 season, before becoming part of the permanent judging panel from World Championship IV onward.

Team member Lauren Winter would pass away just before 2024.

Robot History

World Championship I
Plan X vs. Wrecks Plan X's first ever match in BattleBots was against the unique walker design of Wrecks. Plan X pushes Wrecks around the BattleBox. Plan X gingerly exited its starting square as Wrecks shuffled towards it. However, Plan X's superior maneuverability allowed it to get behind Wrecks. However, Dan Chatterton's robot changed direction and its vertical spinner chewed at Plan X's outer armor and dislodged the rod from its back end. Lisa Winter's robot retaliated by pushing from the back again, tipping Wrecks in such a way that its disc hit the BattleBox floor. "He's lacking mobility here and Plan X [is] really trying to take advantage here." — Kenny Florian as Plan X attempts to control its opponent With Wrecks unable to turn around, Plan X continued to shove the gyro walker until one of its teeth became caught in the floor. Wrecks was flipped over, but used its vertical spinner to drag itself toward the screws. Though it initially landed upright, Wrecks threw itself over again, struggling to escape the sides of the arena as Plan X approached with its spinning hammers. Plan X charges at Wrecks. Lisa Winter's robot charged forward, attacking the legs of Wrecks with its primary weapon but not causing significant damage. Wrecks eventually righted itself, but was again facing the wall rather than its opponent. It twisted around as Plan X's team discovered their robot was stuck in the closing seconds. "I'm stuck on something - get me off. Get me off... I'm stuck on the tail. Minibots, hit me, minibots." — Lisa Winter instructs the minibots to assist as Wrecks closes in Wrecks' late assault on Plan X. With just five seconds to go, Wrecks tore into the side of its immobile opponent, sending parts flying as the the battle went the distance. However, this superficial damage was not enough to sway the judges, who gave Plan X a unanimous victory. This win gave Plan X the No.13 seed as it advanced to the Round of 16.
Plan X vs. Bronco In the Round of 16, Plan X faced Inertia Labs and Bronco, armed with the solid bar spinner. Prior to the fight, Lisa Winter doubted that Bronco would be able to flip it due to its large dimensions, while Bronco's Reason Bradley also expressed concerns about the power of Plan X's primary weapon. Plan X is immediately thrown over. Both robots initially darted around the BattleBox, eventually meeting in the center. Bronco took the opportunity to throw Plan X on top of the screws and actually succeeded, instantly stranding it upside-down as it was eventually pushed on top of the hazard. Chris Rose: "What in the world is Plan X gonna do?! It's just getti- This could be it early!" Kenny Florian: "Well, we have our answer! Bronco flipping Plan X right into the screws..." — Chris and Kenny react as Plan X is immobilized Plan X is counted out. This attack also destroyed the casing for Plan X's 'brain', which detached and fell into the space behind the screws. With no way of self-righting from this position, Plan X was counted out after 40 seconds, eliminating Lisa Winter's bot from the tournament.

Trivia

• The base of Plan X was a BattleKit, made by Carlo Bertocchini of BioHazard fame.
• Alongside Warrior Clan, Plan X was the first multibot design to compete in the rebooted BattleBots seasons, both appearing in the opening episode of World Championship I.
• Plan X's qualifier battle against Wrecks was also the first judges' decision to take place in televised BattleBots since Season 5.0.
