- "We were just a 336 pound toy to be shoved under Pete's hammers."
- — Gaylan Douglas on Phere, BattleBots: The Official Guide
Phere was a superheavyweight robot that fought in Season 3.0, Season 4.0, and Season 5.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots. It was essentially a 36-inch round spinning dome with corkscrew-like blades that were capable of self-righting as well as a front spiked wedge. Phere was rather successful, reaching the quarter-finals of Season 3.0. After Season 3.0, the robot was revised to have a "donut blade" going around the bottom of it, but this new addition caused Phere to lose its first battle in Season 4.0. In Season 5.0, the robot was completely revised, but lost its first battle again.
Builder Gaylan Douglas described his robot's look as a "cross between an evil dragon and Darth Vader."
According to it's factoid from The Official Guide to Battlebots, four kids can sit inside the dome of Phere. The dome is also large enough to hold a tire from an 18 - wheeler.

Season 3.0[] |
---|
Phere vs. MantaRay Phere's first fight was against MantaRay. Phere immediately got its spinning wedged dome underneath MantaRay and ripped the weapon chain off of MantaRay. Phere's dome wasn't spinning fast enough to any further damage, but MantaRay stopped moving and was counted out. Phere won by knockout and was now against GoPostal. |
Phere vs. GoPostal When the match began, Phere spun up its dome and slowly approached GoPostal. Due to a burnt-out master switch, half of its drive motors were incapacitated, meaning that Phere had to fight with limited mobility. As GoPostal charged into attack, Phere turned right and took some major blows from the thwacking hammers to the dome. To Phere's fortune, GoPostal's two thwacking hammers broke off a few seconds later, permanently cutting short its offensive. With GoPostal being reduced to spinning in one place, the fight became a slow pushing match, with Phere giving a few bumps before the bout made the distance. Phere won on a close 25-20 judges' decision, and it advanced to the TV rounds, where it was pitted up against OJ. |
Phere vs. OJ Prior to the match, Team Xtremebots had trouble starting up their robot. With the help of Fuzzy Mauldin, they found out that it was a radio issue caused by the transmitter module being dropped prior to its installment, so it was replaced by a spare one. Courtesy of The Armada's willingness to put the bout on hold, Team Xtremebots was able to go ahead with the fight. Phere slugged it out with its dome against OJ's spinning shell, managing to rip off both of the latter's shark tooth blades. Eventually, the match made the distance, with Phere coming on top in a close 23-22 judges' decision. |
Phere vs. Anubis In the Round of 16, Phere was now put up against Anubis. Due to its weapon belt being stretched thin, the power of Phere's dome was drastically reduced. Phere had to rely primarily on its wedge for this bout.Throughout the fight, Phere constantly rode up Anubis' wedge, as its own wedge wasn't as effective. Despite this, Phere's aggressive display of driving ultimately paid off when one of its rams damaged a lifting arm on Anubis, putting it out of the action. The fight eventually made the distance, with Phere gaining the edge with a 27-18 judges' decision, to the surprise of the team. This win put Phere to the quarter-finals, where it faced Toro. |
Phere vs. Toro Immedietly, Toro went straight at Phere and flipped it on its back without giving it a chance to spin up. Although Phere was capable of self-righting using the dome, the dome was unable to spin back up, so Phere was counted out and Toro won by a quick knockout. This meant that Phere was eliminated from the tournament. |
Superheavyweight Royal Rumble Phere wasn't finished, however, as it entered the Superheavyweight Royal Rumble at the end of the tournament. It was pushed into the entrance ramp by Anubis and it ended up getting flipped on its back by Toro once again and it stayed on its back for the rest of the rumble. Eventually, it lost out to Toro. |
Season 4.0[] |
Phere vs. Little Blue Engine Phere had some minor modifications done to it for Season 4.0, including a new "donut ring" which surrounded the outside of the robot. However, this addition proved to be Phere's demise in its only battle against Little Blue Engine, where after one of Little Blue Engine's rams two of Phere's safety switches got caught in the donut ring and torn off, meaning the robot was immobilized. Phere then got shoved into hazards until it was counted out and eliminated from the tournament again. As of 2022, it is unknown if Phere participated the superheavyweight consolation rumble at the end of the tournament. |
Season 5.0[] |
Phere vs. The Probe For reaching the quarter-finals in Season 3.0, Phere once again was allowed to skip the preliminary rounds of Season 5.0, where it eventually fought The Probe. The Probe won by knockout and Phere was eliminated from the tournament once again. |
