Panic Attack 3, more commonly known simply as Panic Attack, was a heavyweight robot built by Team Panic Attack which fought in Season 2.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots.

Entering with championship-winning pedigree from the UK show Robot Wars, it was a yellow and black machine armed with a set of electric lifting forks, which it would regularly use to lift, tip and carry opponents towards the arena walls and traps. The design for Panic Attack 3 (in actuality, the fourth version to be built) also incorporated aluminum, fiberglass and bulletproof polycarbonate armor, side skirts and a self-righting lid which could also act as a secondary lifter or clamp.[2] Despite its weaponry bearing a strong resemblance to that of Vlad the Impaler, it was BioHazard which served as Kim Davis' inspiration for building Panic Attack.

"I looked at all the British and USA battlebot [sic] robots and decided that if you could disable the wheels/control then their weapon would also be useless. I liked the design of Bio-Hazard [sic] from the USA and loosely based PA on it. I didn't want a lifting arm, I wanted something that could lift and use as a weapon."
— Kim Davies on Panic Attack's inspiration in 2021

Through victorious in its first BattleBots fight against Gammatron, Panic Attack endured a more difficult encounter against frenZy in the Round of 16, where radio issues and a damaged speed controller mount contributed to its immobilization in the second half of the fight.[1] As a result, it was eliminated from the Season 2.0 heavyweight division at that stage.

Team Panic Attack, under the name The Welsh Wizards, would return for Season 3.0 with a brand-new machine named Scallywag.

Outside BattleBots[]

Panic Attack was originally built for the second series of Robot Wars, where it emerged as overall champion. The second, third and fourth versions followed on with semi-final finishes in Series 3, 4 and 5 respectively, all of which were entered under the same common name. The fourth version, which competed as 'Panic Attack 3' in BattleBots, would also fight in the spin-off series Robot Wars: Extreme and in Series 7, by which time it received a rear skirt and an 'anti-hammer' lid in place of the self-righting mechanism.[2] Builder, driver and captain Kim Davies explained that its name came from the team's panic to get the robot ready for its initial competition debut.[3]

In late September 2012, the version of Panic Attack which competed in Season 2.0 was restored to operational condition, briefly competing in exhibition battles at Robots Live! events. In 2021, it reappeared as a static display at Bristol Bot Builders and RoboNerd events under Kim Davies' ownership.

In May 2022, Kim Davies auctioned Panic Attack for sale through the Unofficial Robot Wars Facebook group.[4] It eventually sold to organizers of National Havoc Robot League events as an addition to their heavyweight robot museum.

Panic Attack's first match in Season 2.0 was against Gammatron. Panic Attack drove out to meet Gammatron and was hit by its saw, but took no damage. Panic Attack tipped Gammatron onto its side using its lifting forks and pushed it onto the killsaws. The BattleBox hazard ripped Gammatron's dome off and Panic Attack continued to push Gammatron around the arena as it was counted out. Panic Attack won by KO at 1:10 and advanced to the Round of 16.

Panic Attack advanced to the Round of 16, where it faced frenZy in a rematch from the Robot Wars War of Independence special. Both robots drove out of their starting squares and Panic Attack was able to lift frenZy once before letting it go. It then lost most of its right-side skirt as it drove over the killsaws momentarily. frenZy began to hammer Panic Attack relentlessly, denting the top and damaging its drive train. After over a minute of hammer blows, Panic Attack's speed controller had broken free, shorting out the electronics. As a result, Panic Attack was no longer able to move and was counted out. frenZy won by KO at 2:07 and Panic Attack was eliminated from the tournament.

Panic Attack was repaired in time for the Heavyweight Royal Rumble, minus its side skirts. Panic Attack was in the middle of the action at the beginning, attacking Nightmare and Vlad the Impaler. Panic Attack had stopped moving with thirty seconds left in the fight. However, the tournament directors had decided that the rumble should continue for another two minutes. Panic Attack started to move again, managing to survive to the end of the fight, but lost overall to Tazbot.

Trivia[]

  • Panic Attack was one of only two Robot Wars UK champions to compete in the classic era of BattleBots, alongside Razer.
    • Of these, Panic Attack was the only robot who had already won their respective UK title prior to debuting in BattleBots.
    • It was also the only one of the two to compete in a televised season on Comedy Central.
  • In his introduction, Mark Beiro erroneously infers that Panic Attack 3 was built out of titanium, when neither it nor any of its Robot Wars incarnations used this material for armor.
