panDEMONium was a middleweight robot built by students of Miami, Florida which is known to have competed in BattleBots and BotsIQ-sanctioned events between 2009 and 2011.

It was a four-wheel drive robot with a black paint scheme and a full-body shell spinner as its main weapon and armor. The slanted shell – similar in shape to those of contemporary heavyweights such as Megabyte - featured cutting teeth on its perimeter to slash and concuss opponents. In later BotsIQ events, the teeth themselves were painted in a contrasting red/orange color.

Originally, panDEMONium was built by a team of students from the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, competing in the 2009 High School Championship under the Carrollton-Senioritis name. One of the school's three entries for this competition - along with Teenager and the similarly-armed Fuchsia Fusion - it was initially consigned to the Loser's Bracket following an early loss to Tin Shredder, but recovered with four consecutive victories including one against Fuchsia Fusion itself. A second loss against ODDBOTT 3.75 eliminated panDEMONium from the High School Championship with a strong 4-2 match record.[3][4]

panDEMONium would continue to compete in BotsIQ events for some time following its BattleBots appearance. By the time of its entries into the 2010 and 2011 National Championships, it had been transferred to a team of students from the University of Miami,[5] competing in the 120lb College & Pro division.[2][6][7] panDEMONium's match records during this period remain largely unknown; however, it is documented to have reached the finals of the 2010 iteration against rival University of Miami machine Category 5,[8] and taken part in three battles in 2011 against Rhino, Witch Doctor[9][10] and The Blender.[11][12]

Robot History[]

High School Championship 2009[]

panDEMONium vs. Tin Shredder

panDEMONium's first known BattleBots event was the 2009 High School Championship, where it competed with the Carrollton-Senioritis team. Following an initial bye from the first round of the Winner's Bracket, it would face the wedge-shaped drum spinner Tin Shredder in the second round, the robot's debut match. However, this proved to be a difficult draw for panDEMONium, with official BattleBots match records suggesting that it lost the match by knockout after 53 seconds.[3][4]

panDEMONium vs. Copperhead 3.141592654 (Loser's Bracket)

Now relegated to the Loser's Bracket, panDEMONium would face Copperhead 3.141592654, an upgraded version of reigning BotsIQ 120lb champion Copperhead 3, for an opportunity to keep its place in the competition. Footage of this match was publicly released by the Autodesk Inventor YouTube channel,[13] which opened with panDEMONium shuffling back and forth in the blue square, while quickly getting its shell up to speed. In doing so, however, it mistakenly reversed into the nearby screws, causing small sparks to fly and the robot to recoil towards the top-left corner of the BattleBox. panDEMONium hesitated, before driving into the nearby bumper with similar results. However, it kept back as Copperhead 3.141592654 approached, allowing its opponent to drive drum-first into the screw mount. panDEMONium shuttled past and into the right wheel of Copperhead 3.141592654, crucially disabling its opponent's drive on that side.

With Copperhead 3.141592654 now partially incapacitated, panDEMONium spent several moments lingering near the BattleBox center, before attacking Copperhead 3.141592654's rear panel. This was followed by two direct hits on Copperhead 3.141592654's drum, during a tentative phase for the Carrollton team. panDEMONium next hit the left wheel of Copperhead 3.141592654, sending it recoiling backwards into the screws. Faint smoke began pouring from the top and underside of panDEMONium as it shuffled back and forth again, after which its shell stopped rotating entirely. With its weapon no longer active, panDEMONium initially kept clear of Copperhead 3.141592654 again as the latter gyro-danced across the arena floor.

Eventually, it cornered and rammed Copperhead 3.141592654 in the blue square; the recoil from panDEMONium's shell was enough to flip Copperhead 3.141592654 over and onto the screws. Once Copperhead 3.141592654 was able to escape, panDEMONium rammed, buffeted and pushed it away a few more times, though not without catching itself on the screws in the process. panDEMONium, after bumping Copperhead 3.141592654 again, began to spin its shell up once more, which it used to attack and damage Copperhead 3.141592654 a few more times as the latter fell foul of a pulverizer. Temporarily stopping next to another screw mount, it kept attacking Copperhead 3.141592654 until the end of the full three minutes, at which point more smoke poured out from within its shell, suggesting a motor burnout.

Official BattleBots match records confirm that panDEMONium was victorious on the subsequent Judges' decision.[3][4]

panDEMONium vs. Fuchsia Fusion (Loser's Bracket)

panDEMONium next faced another full-body spinner from the Carrollton School teams, Fuchsia Fusion. As before, both competitors lasted the full three minutes according to BattleBots match records, with the Judges' decision ruling in panDEMONium's favor.[3][4]

panDEMONium vs. ODDQUADD (Loser's Bracket)

Next to face panDEMONium were Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School and one of their invertible wedge rammers, ODDQUADD. Official match records indicate that this was its quickest match yet, winning by knockout after 48 seconds. [3][4]

panDEMONium vs. Fargo (Loser's Bracket)

panDEMONium advanced to face Fargo, a drum spinner entered by a team from John Hersey High School. Both robots fought for the whole three minutes according to BattleBots match records, with panDEMONium once again winning on a Judges' decision.[3][4]

panDEMONium vs. ODDBOTT 3.75 (Loser's Bracket)

With four consecutive victories by this stage of the Loser's Bracket, panDEMONium faced the second and only remaining Bay Path entry ODDBOTT 3.75. However, it would be less successful in this instance, losing to ODDBOTT 3.75 by knockout after one minute and 21 seconds according to official match records. panDEMONium would thus be eliminated from the 2009 High School Championship with a 4-2 match record.[3][4]
