Pain Train was a heavyweight robot built by Evan Arias and Team Shreddit which competed in BattleBots World Championship V and VI.

It was a black and blue, two-wheel drive, invertible robot armed with a 55lb eggbeater drum spinner, as well as two forks to force opponents into the weapon. The robot's top plate was decorated with various NYC related iconography such the Statue of Liberty, graffiti, and buildings from the burrows. Pain Train also sported a large blue LED that ran the entire back of the machine.

While solid in construction, Pain Train was plagued with problems; lack of weapon reach, constant rocking when changing motion, and overall unreliability. The robot lost its first fight to SlamMow!, but picked up its first win against SMEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Despite the 1-1 record, Pain Train missed the tournament.

The team returned for BattleBots: Bounty Hunters, entering the Witch Doctor bracket. In its opening match against SubZero, Pain Train found itself unable to gain a foothold in the fight and ultimately lost by knockout.

Pain Train returned for the 2021 season with a new build, sporting a 78lb drum spinning at the maximum allowed 250mph tip speed, and artwork across much of its armor. Despite its visible upgrades and the BattleBots experience Evan Arias earned, Pain Train lost its opening battle to Deep Six by knockout, and was disemboweled by the returning Yeti.

Returning for BattleBots: Champions I, Pain Train was dominated by Shatter! in the opening round of the bracket and was eliminated at the first hurdle.

Evan Arias confirmed Team Shreddit's application for World Championship VII in March 2022. A few months later, it was confirmed that Pain Train would be retired in favor of a brand new build. Evan Arias' beetleweight Shreddit Bro was scaled up to a 250lb robot of the same name.

Outside BattleBots[]

Both Pain Train builds were ultimately sold to the National Havoc Robot League for their bot museum, where they currently reside on display.

Despite its BattleBots retirement, Team Shreddit signed Pain Train up for RoboGames 2023 under its normal name, but withdrew before the event took place.

Pain Train vs. SlamMow!

Pain Train gets suplexed by SlamMow!.

Pain Train's first fight of the 2020 season was against Craig Danby's new machine, SlamMow!. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the match, Pain Train didn't have good traction and was delivered to the screws and flipped. Pain Train was then pinned and lifted, but was later able to damage SlamMow!'s arms. Both bots then made their way to the other side of the arena where Pain Train was picked up and thrown over SlamMow!'s body. Pain Train was then pushed to the arena barrier where Pain Train lost its other weapon belt. Luckily, Pain Train ended up damaging one of SlamMow!'s arms enough that it could no longer work before its drum shutdown. Pain Train was still having trouble moving and after another lift by SlamMow!, it was counted out and SlamMow! got the win by KO with just eight seconds remaining.

Pain Train vs. SMEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Pain Train's next fight was against fellow New York newcomer, SMEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Pain Train struggled to make any contact with its opponent, causing only superficial damage. However, its own design meant its opponent could not take advantage either. Pain Train was experiencing drive issues but managed to connect weapon-to-weapon and remove SMEEEEEEEEEEEE's left spinner, leaving the robot lopsided. After another collision, Pain Train's weapon, which had been overworked, finally failed and now neither robot had a working weapon. Time ran out without much interaction and the judges awarded a 2-1 split decision in favor of Pain Train.

BattleBots: Bounty Hunters[]

Pain Train vs. SubZero

Pain Train also took part in the Witch Doctor Bounty Hunters bracket, and went up against SubZero in the first round. As the fight began, both bots began circling each other before SubZero shoved Pain Train into a corner of the box. Pain Train appeared to be experiencing drive issues, and SubZero took advantage. Pain Train was pinned against the rails, but its opponent refrained from using its flipper. SubZero reversed and tried shoving Pain Train across the screws, but it managed to escape. Pain Train was again pushed across the box, struggling to get a hold of the fight. Pain Train continued to suffer and was inevitably counted out, giving SubZero the win by KO. SubZero advanced to the next round of the tournament, and Pain Train was eliminated.

Pain Train's first opponent of the 2021 season was the newly-designed Deep Six. While Deep Six remained in its square and turned to face its opponent, Pain Train attempted to box-rush but flew into the arena barriers. Pain Train recovered to face Deep Six as both weapons were now up to speed, but neither made contact for several more moments. Eventually, the first hit came courtesy of Deep Six as it tore away the wheel guard of Pain Train and took a chunk out of the tire. However, as the giant bar made contact with Pain Train's front, Deep Six flew backwards into the screws and bent one of their rear stabilizers. Pain Train could not capitalize as it was left spitting parts of its tire as it attempted to move towards its opponent. Unable to line up an attack of its own, Deep Six made contact a second and third time, tearing off Pain Train's lid and punting it away. Pain Train was now beached on the screws with parts littered around the BattleBox, and one of its lithium polymer batteries alight below it. Unable to escape, Pain Train was counted out, handing the win to Deep Six.

Pain Train vs. Yeti

Pain Train's second opponent was fellow drum spinner Yeti. Similar to in their last fight, Pain Train charged out of its box but drifted into the arena barrier as Yeti positioned itself. Pain Train landed a few early shots to the side of Yeti, but was unable to tear off either of the tires. It then left itself vulnerable to Yeti's drum as Greg Gibson got around to the side of Pain Train, grinding at its armor before getting underneath. Yeti continued to evade Pain Train before opting to go weapon-to-weapon, which saw Yeti popped up several times from Pain Train's heavier drum. Yeti then landed a blow which unbalanced Pain Train and flipped it over, detaching its top panel for the second consecutive fight. From then, Yeti honed in on the side of Pain Train and tore away its wheelguard, exposing its right-side tire. Yeti was then able to eat away at its exposed tire, before slamming into the side of Pain Train. Two final hits from Yeti caused Pain Train's weapon to fall out on one side, tore out a brushless motor and left another dangling outside the bot. Pain Train was put out of its misery, and fell to 0-2 for the season.

Pain Train fought in an exhibition match against Deadlift, released by BattleBots as part of Vengeance in Vegas. Pain Train was immediately box-rushed by Deadlift who used its flamethrower to deter Evan Arias' bot. Pain Train's drum was up to speed, but lacked the reach to do anything other than graze the front of Deadlift in the opening moments. Sparks flew from the clamping fist of Deadlift as it drove Pain Train into the barrier. Pain Train retaliated by landing a shot on the edge on Deadlift, popping it into the air and curling up part of the front wedge. Despite this, Deadlift was able to get underneath again and shoved Pain Train into the screws, eventually picking it up and delivering a suplex. However, Pain Train remained stuck on Deadlift's arm, overbalancing it slightly. In trying to free Pain Train, Deadlift began spinning in circles while shooting fire in its opponent's direction, and then drove Pain Train into the corner. Pain Train was now free again, but its drum was spinning down and Deadlift picked its opponent up again, dropped it immediately. Deadlift managed to do this more convincingly the second time, throwing Pain Train over again before pinning it in the blue square in an impressive display of control. Pain Train drove away but quickly found itself at the mercy of Deadlift, who drove it on top of the screws in front of the judges. Initially high-centered, the screws eventually reversed to free Pain Train, who was picked up and suplexed for a third time in the fight. In the closing seconds, Deadlift picked Pain Train up one final time and unanimously won the resulting judges' decision.

BattleBots: Champions I[]

Pain Train returned for BattleBots: Champions I, marking its final televised competition before retirement. In the first round of the Lock-Jaw Sin City Slugfest episode, Pain Train faced off against fellow New York entry Shatter! and sported brand new wheels for this fight, with the intention of improving Pain Train's control in the arena. As the fight began, Pain Train dealt the first hits to the front of Shatter!, tearing away a wedgelet and many of the ablative panels. However, the fight soon turned in Shatter!'s favor as it hammered Pain Train's top panel while its own primary weapon ground to a halt. Shatter! remained in the center of the BattleBox as Pain Train almost drove itself in the screws before suffering several more Shatter! attacks from overhead. Pain Train drove into the Upper Deck before attempting to escape Adam Wrigley's hammer bot. Each time it attempted to push Shatter!, however, Pain Train suffered blow after blow from its opponent's hammer weapon, finding itself under the 100lb pulverizer before being shoved into the screws. Shatter! pinned Pain Train in the short corner, then found itself stuck on top of its opponent in the final seconds of the fight. Shatter! won by unanimous decision and Pain Train was eliminated from the competition.
