Maximum Paralysis is a heavyweight robot built by Team Chaos which competed in Season 4.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots, as well as BattleBots Proving Ground.

It was originally a four-wheel drive robot armored in ½" Lexan sheets.[1] armed with a front-mounted flipping arm. According to Team Chaos, it took approximately eight months to build. Maximum Paralysis did not perform well in competition, losing its first and only match to I-Beam.

In 2023, it was confirmed that Maximum Paralysis would come back from retirement to take part in Proving Ground - part of the live show BattleBots: Destruct-A-Thon. An upgraded build of Maximum Paralysis was built ahead of the show, featuring flywheel flipper similar to Blip. The remainder of its construction, however, is unknown. Maximum Paralysis was scheduled to compete against Traves T. on the weekend of July 1-2, 2023, but its opponent withdrew. As a result, it took on a replacement in Banshee. However, it lost both fights and ended the weekend winless.

In November 2023, the team announced their intention to return to Las Vegas on the weekend of March 16-17, 2024 and were seeking an opponent.[2] Slammo! accepted the invitation and their fights were later confirmed by Team Danby. The team had added skirts to the sides of Maximum Paralysis ahead of the fight to make it more difficult for opponents to get underneath, and extended the height of its flipper to aid self-righting. However, its twice lost out to Slammo! over the course of the weekend.

Outside BattleBots[]

Despite it's poor performance in BattleBots, Maximum Paralysis would later enter the 2003 event Robocide. As Maximum Paralysis 2, it first defeated 4-Letter Word before losing to Tornado Mer. In the loser's bracket, Maximum Paralysis 2 picked up wins over 8 Ball, Surgeon General and The Other One before falling to HexaDecimator. Maximum Paralysis 2 ended with a 4-2 record and achieved a fourth place finish in the tournament.

The team would also build middleweight Fang Shui, which was armed a unique swinging hammer weapon. However, Fang Shui went 1-2 and did not find the same success as Maximum Paralysis 2. This version of Maximum Paralysis is not known to have competed in any other events after Robocide.

Robot History[]

Season 4.0[]

Maximum Paralysis vs. I-Beam

Maximum Paralysis' only fight in BattleBots was against I-Beam.

Maximum Paralysis and I-Beam initially charged at each other, but missed. I-Beam then began to spin on the spot, hoping Maximum Paralysis would attack and suffer damage. Maximum Paralysis waited it out, however, and hit I-Beam as soon as it stopped spinning. I-Beam then rammed Maximum Paralysis and the bots circled one other, trying to maneuver into position for an attack. I-Beam got a few hits with its sit and spin move, causing visible damage to Maximum Paralysis. Both robots engaged in a pushing match as the fight came to an end.

The judges went for I-Beam on a 32-13 decision, scoring all the points in Damage. This meant that Maximum Paralysis was eliminated from the tournament.

BattleBots Proving Ground[]

Maximum Paralysis is due to make its return in BattleBots Proving Ground, where it was scheduled to fight Traves T. - a rookie robot. However, Traves T. dropped out and was replaced by Banshee.

Maximum Paralysis vs. Traves T. (7/2/2023)

Maximum Paralysis was scheduled to face Traves T. for a second time on July 2, 2023, but this could not take place due to Traves T.'s aforementioned withdrawal.

Maximum Paralysis vs. Banshee (7/1/2023)

Maximum Paralysis eventually got to fight Banshee.

The fight began with Maximum Paralysis approaching Banshee, who was driving in arcs on the edge of the blue square. Banshee then got to the side of Maximum Paralysis, sliding its forks underneath and shoving the reptile-themed robot.

Banshee vs Maximum Paralysis 1 1

Banshee takes Maximum Paralysis to the screws.

The pair separated near the drivers' booths and Banshee's drive issues persisted, but Maximum Paralysis began smoking as it gave chase and rode up the front forks. Banshee was then able to force Maximum Paralysis against the screws, but could not capitalize on this before it escaped the pin.

Banshee vs Maximum Paralysis 1 2

Maximum Paralysis pushes Banshee across the arena.

Past the halfway point, both robots were yet to fire their flipper, reduced to ramming into one another. Maximum Paralysis got around to Banshee's side and rammed it across the BattleBox until David Small's robot escaped. Neither robot was able to mount a meaningful attack in the closing moments, with Maximum Paralysis driving into the Upper Deck screws in the final seconds.

With neither robot firing their weapon even once across the full duration of the fight, Banshee was deemed the winner by crowd vote despite Maximum Paralysis going the distance.

Maximum Paralysis vs. Banshee (7/2/2023)

Maximum Paralysis took on Banshee for a second time on July 2, 2023.

Maximum Paralysis started slow, allowing Banshee to box rush them while still in their starting square. Banshee subsequently managed to flip Maximum Paralysis over before driving them into the screws. Maximum Paralysis's flipper proved to be nonfunctional due to their flipper arm chain breaking. Banshee would maneuver Maximum Paralysis over to the Upper Deck, then flip the stranded robot onto it.

Banshee vs Maximum Paralysis Upper Deck pop

Banshee jumps onto the Upper Deck

Banshee would jump onto the Upper Deck flipping Maximum Paralysis over. Maximum Paralysis would reverse off before reengaging Banshee. Running backwards, Maximum Paralysis was able to temporarily hold off Banshees flipper. However this was unable to be sustained, and Banshee managed to land a series of flips that would result in Maximum Paralysis once again stranded, now under the pulverizer. Banshee would manage to flip off one of Maximum Paralysis's front decorative panels before righting Team Chaos' helpless machine.

Maximum Paralysis would swiftly back out of the corner before ramping up Banshee. The two would engage in a circular motion before Maximum Paralysis would back away. Maximum Paralysis would be maneuvered into the screws, before being flipped over once again. Maximum Paralysis would be slammed into the wall by Banshee, before being righted by another slam, and saved from a count out in the process.

Maximum Paralysis Banshee 7-3 1

Maximum Paralysis gets underneath Banshee

Maximum Paralysis managed to gain some ground when they maneuvered into Banshees side, slamming them against the wall. Then managed to bait David Smalls machine into a flip before getting under the machine. This advantage would not last, as Banshee slipped out of Maximum Paralysis's control, before flipping the machine over. Maximum Paralysis would end the match once again stranded.

Banshee was deemed the winner once again by crowd decision, consigning Maximum Paralysis to a winless weekend.

Maximum Paralysis vs. Slammo! (3/16/2024)

Maximum Paralysis took on Craig Danby and Slammo! in March 2024. Unbeknownst to Danby, however, Slammo!'s flipper experienced issues after its weapon tests and was non-functional in this bout.

Maximum Paralysis vs Slammo 1 1

Slammo! takes Maximum Paralysis to the pulverizer.

After beginning to approach Slammo!, Maximum Paralysis quickly turned before facing its opponent again. It dashed forward, but Slammo!'s front forks were able to slide under its front and push Charlie King's robot around. Slammo! then drove Maximum Paralysis back against the spiked rails, in front of both teams. Slammo! slid around to the side of Maximum Paralysis, ramming it towards the screws as Bil Dwyer questioned whether it was too large for Slammo! to lift properly.

Maximum Paralysis vs Slammo 1 2

Maximum Paralysis is attacked by the pulverizer.

Maximum Paralysis was next taken to the nearby pulverizer, suffering several blows to its top armor. Slammo! released, removing its opponent's decorative panel off the front and charging from the side and then the rear again. Slammo! returned Maximum Paralysis to the pulverizer as the snake-themed bot sat on top of its left-side fork.

At minute 1:50 Slammo! got behind Maximum Paralysis, rammed in, and the bots were entangled with Slammo! forks jammed both under and over the armor on Maximum Paralysis effectively holding Maximum Paralysis off the ground. Craig was unable to release the opponent. Charlie informed the referee that the bots were stuck together but a time out was not called.

Maximum Paralysis vs Slammo 1 3

Slammo! gets around to the back of Maximum Paralysis.

With neither primary weapon seemingly functional, Slammo! took Maximum Paralysis from one corner of the BattleBox to another before resting it under the pulverizer once again. Maximum Paralysis was unable to flee Slammo!'s forks and similarly, Slammo! was unable to release Maximum Paralysis. Danby's robot continued to drive Maximum Paralysis around the arena in the closing moments, and the flywheel flipper suffered yet more attacks from the corner pulverizer as the clock hit zero.

After a dominating display, Slammo! was declared the winner by crowd vote.

Following the match, an extensive effort was needed to separate the bots with pry bars. Later on, the officials determined that a time-out should have been called and the robots should have been separated. It was stated that this was the first time two robots had ever become stuck together in a Proving Ground competition.

Maximum Paralysis vs. Slammo! (3/17/2024)

Maximum Paralysis again fought Slammo! during the Sunday show.

Slammo! vs Maximum Paralysis 2 1

Slammo! gets around to the back of Maximum Paralysis.

With superior speed, Slammo! once again quickly got behind Maximum Paralysis and rammed it into the wall entangling the the two bot. Slammo!'s forks held Maximum Paralysis' wheels off the floor preventing any effective defense and, as in the previous match, Danby was unable to lift or suplex Maximum Paralysis. Danby continued to carry Maximum Paralysis around the BattleBox for another 35 seconds before the referee called for a release at minute 2:15. A timeout was called at minute 2:06. Crew entered the arena in an attempt to separate the contestants.

Once successful, the robots returned to their squares and the match was restarted. Maximum Paralysis came out more aggressively and repeatedly tried to flip Slammo! but was unable to get position on the speedy robot. Danby was eventually able to partially lift Maximum Paralysis with his robot's forks and turn Maximum Paralysis over or sideways against the wall of the box several times.

Slammo! vs Maximum Paralysis 2 self-right

Maximum Paralysis self-rights.

Maximum Paralysis successfully self-righted each time and the fight continued. Maximum Paralysis proved its functionality and was able to avoid letting Slammo! lift it again but was unable to land any successful blows on Slammo! in the time remaining.

Slammo! ultimately won by crowd vote once again, extending Maximum Paralysis' winless record.
