Mangō was a combat robot designed by the Auckland University Robotics Association (AURA for short) which applied for BattleBots World Championship II.

It was an invertible, four-wheel drive ring spinner which was capable of hitting 600rpm and running inverted. According to team captain Jack Barker, Mangō was rejected due to there being too many similar robots in the competition already.[1] Its outer ring was powered by three large motors, which spun the primary weapon via bearings rolling against the inside of the ring.

Mangō gets its name from the Māori word for "shark", as the Māori people are an indigenous Polynesian ethnic group based in mainland New Zealand, the same country as AURA. The bot was gray and white in color, with teeth around the circumference of the top panel to reinforce the shark theme.

Though Mangō would never compete in BattleBots, team captain Jack Barker would later go on to find success with future Giant Nut winners End Game.

Trivia[]

  • Interestingly, AURA's website lists Mangō at 115kg which, if true, would have made it overweight for the competition.
  • Mangō is the only robot in BattleBots history to officially be spelt with a macron (ō) in its name.
    • Macrons are also prevalent in Māori language to indicate a long vowel.
