Magnitude is a heavyweight robot built by Team Wazio which competed at BattleBots Proving Ground as part of the Destruct-A-Thon live show. It is also due to fight at BattleBots Faceoffs.

It is a six-wheel drive, black and yellow robot armed with eggbeater spinner at the front. It was designed by Team Immersion in early 2023 and built by Chad New later that year, who has competed with Caustic Creations and Copperhead ever since its debut season in 2019. Magnitude was originally designed under the name Atomic Pumpkin, but this had to be changed due to licensing reasons. It was also originally designed to sport a "twisted, vortex-style" drum, similar to the weapon geometry seen on World Championship VIII applicant Subatomic, but this was dropped.[1] Described by Chad New as "HyperShock meets Riptide with things that we have learned from Copperhead", he cited both Top 16 finishers from World Championship VII as inspiration for the design.[2] Magnitude is roughly based on Chad New's 30lb robot Yahoo with inspirations from King of Bots competitor, Black Rabbit. It also sports a wide front plow and twin rear forks.

Under its original name, Magnitude was originally set to fight RoboGames 2023 heavyweight champion Manta on the weekend of June 23-24, 2023. However, in late May, their fight was removed from the BattleBots website. It was then confirmed that the team had pulled out of their fight with the production crew looking to find a replacement to fight Manta, ultimately being filled by Triton.[3]

Magnitude was scheduled to compete across the weekend of December 10-11, 2023, where it was slated to fight Vertigo, a new robot from Team HyperShock. However Vertigo withdrew, being replaced with HyperShock. Despite a valiant effort, Magnitude lost both of its fights late on by knockout.

As confirmed by Chad New in a January 2024 Green Square Talks BattleBots interview, Magnitude would return to combat across the weekend of March 23-24, 2024 and take on fellow Colorado competitor, Taco Tuesday.[4] The team added magnets to their side armor and also manufactured a single-tooth drum weighing around 55lbs. Magnitude featured new wheels ahead of its next battles and potentially a faster weapon motor. Magnitude is set to return to the arena in Fall 2024 in a BattleBots Faceoffs group including Witch Doctor, Taco Tuesday and DOOM, announced by Taco Tuesday captain Carter Hurd.[5]

Outside BattleBots[]

Magnitude also competed at RoboGames 2024, receiving a Round 1 bye before winning consecutive battles against Ray Billings' Stink Eye, Puck and RoboGames stalwart Ragin Scotsman. After losing to defending champion Manta, Magnitude fell into the loser's bracket final and was due to face the winner of BlackJack and Ragin Scotsman. However, Chad New had to catch a flight and due to postponements caused by arena evacuations, Magnitude was forced to withdraw.

Robot History[]

BattleBots Proving Ground[]

Atomic Pumpkin vs. Manta (6/24/2023)

Under its original name, Atomic Pumpkin, its first ever BattleBots fight was due to come in BattleBots Proving Ground against Manta. Atomic Pumpkin pulled out of the fight, however, meaning it could not take place.

Atomic Pumpkin vs. Manta (6/25/2023)

Atomic Pumpkin's second fight was also set to come against Manta, but was also affected by their aforementioned withdrawal.

Magnitude vs. Vertigo (12/10/2023)

Vertigo-vs-Magnitude-Tile

Magnitude vs. Vertigo as seen on the BattleBots website.

Now named Magnitude, it was scheduled to fight Vertigo on December 10, 2023. However, Vertigo withdrew and was replaced by HyperShock.

Magnitude vs. HyperShock (12/10/2023)

HyperShock-vs-Magnitude-Tile

Magnitude vs. HyperShock as seen on the BattleBots website.

Magnitude instead faced seasoned veteran and 2022 re:MARS all:STARS event champion, HyperShock.

HyperShock initiated a box-rush on Magnitude, but the rookie bot swerved to avoid the oncoming charge. Both primary weapons were up to speed and it was Will Bales' team who gained the early advantage, overturning Magnitude and tearing a front fork away.

Magnitude vs HyperShock 1 1

HyperShock charges into Magnitude in the short corner.

Looking to capitalize on Magnitude being inverted near the short corner, HyperShock drove into the arena wall. Magnitude kept its weapon pointed at its opponent before gyroing in the corner, ultimately taking a hit from the pulverizer before HyperShock initiated a brief pin, then charging at the rookie bot and throwing it through the air, costing Chad New's robot a weapon belt.

Magnitude vs HyperShock 1 2

Magnitude harasses HyperShock.

The fight returned to the center of the BattleBox with Magnitude still inverted but remaining a threat. Both robots went weapon-to-weapon, tossing Magnitude through the air and landing upright. The World Championship VIII hopeful then got around to the right flank of HyperShock, popping it into the air and chewing at the re:MARS all:STARS champion's wheels.

Magnitude vs HyperShock 1 3

Magnitude hones in on HyperShock's tires.

After spending several moments jostling for position, Magnitude took advantage of a driving error from Alex Bales and overturned HyperShock near the corner ring-out zone. It kept hassling HyperShock in the corner, striking the protruding ears which allow its disc to keep spinning while upside-down. This led to HyperShock's disc hitting the BattleBox floor as it scurried away from danger and hampered its ability to self-right through drive power and gyroscopic forces alone.

Magnitude vs HyperShock 1 stuck

HyperShock becomes stuck in the paddle.

Now at the halfway point, Magnitude continued to chip away at its opponent. HyperShock dragged itself across the arena floor before Chad New's machine helped right it. With under a minute remaining, HyperShock became stuck in the arena paddle, lodging its forks underneath the hazard.

Magnitude vs HyperShock 1 KO

A count begins against Magnitude.

Magnitude bided its time, honing in on HyperShock's rear wheels and high-centering Will Bales' robot as the referee threatened a simultaneous count-out. However, HyperShock became free and shoved Magnitude away from the corner, which was now suddenly immobile. The referee instead counted Magnitude out, confirming HyperShock's win by knockout with just one second remaining.

Post-fight, Chad New revealed Magnitude was spinning at "only around 75% speed" during its debut battle.

Magnitude vs. Vertigo (12/11/2023)

Magnitude was set to fight Vertigo for a second time on December 11, 2023. Due to Team HyperShock's aforementioned withdrawal, this fight did not go ahead.

Magnitude vs. HyperShock (12/11/2023)

Magnitude took on HyperShock for a second time during the Sunday show.

Both bots met head-on and Magnitude immediately buckled HyperShock's right-front wheel hub. The pair went weapon-to-weapon which caused Magnitude to flip upside-down, landing on the shaft of the pulverizer.

HyperShock Magnitude 2 Lexan hit

HyperShock slams Magnitude into the Lexan.

The inverted Magnitude led with its forks as it tried to test HyperShock's ground game, but was shoved back against the screws. Magnitude tried to use the gyroscopic forces of its weapon to self-right but HyperShock refused to give it the space to do so, coercing Magnitude to the corner before using its single disc to throw Magnitude into the Lexan.

Magnitude vs HyperShock 2 PG hit

Both robots go weapon-to-weapon.

Penned in the corner, one of Magnitude's front forks was pinned back, keeping its right-front wheel off the floor. It was now the correct way up, however, and traded shots with its veteran opponent. Magnitude then drove head-first into the Upper Deck screws, offering its back end up to HyperShock. The former Most Destructive Robot Award winner struck Magnitude, ripping several of its rear forks away in the process.

Magnitude vs HyperShock 2 killsaw slot

Magnitude becomes stuck in the killsaw slot.

Magnitude momentarily became caught in the killsaw slots, again leaving itself vulnerable. HyperShock wasted no time in striking the side of Magnitude, following this up with a frontal assault. HyperShock flung Magnitude through the air near the corner of the BattleBox, causing it to land inverted again as the battle approached its final minute.

HyperShock Magnitude 2 wheel tear PG

HyperShock causes damage to Magnitude's wheel.

Chad New's robot was now struggling for mobility in the middle of the arena, and suffered another big hit. HyperShock caught the back end of Magnitude again, tearing off the remaining rear forks before ripping a chunk out of its left-rear wheel.

Magnitude Weapon Crack 12-10-23

Damage to Magnitude's weapon.

HyperShock avoided getting its serrated forks stuck under the wall, but suddenly lost its right-front tire. This did not hinder its mobility, whereas by contrast, Magnitude was no longer moving in the corner. A count started and Magnitude lost by knockout with six seconds on the clock.

It was revealed post-fight that Magnitude's 4140 steel weapon had cracked during the match.

Magnitude vs. Taco Tuesday (3/23/2024)

Magnitude vs Taco Tuesday tile

Magnitude vs. Taco Tuesday as advertised on the BattleBots website.

Magnitude returned to the BattleBox in March 2024, where it took on Taco Tuesday. It went into this first battle without its front or rear forks, weighing around 30lbs shy of the 250lb limit.

Taco Tuesday vs Magnitude

Both robots come together.

Both robots spun up to speed, but it was Magnitude which gained the early advantage, getting underneath the left side of Taco Tuesday and making contact with its base. Taco Tuesday drove away from danger and swung around to face Magnitude again, before charging head-on into the screws.

Taco Tuesday vs Magnitude 2

Magnitude overturns Taco Tuesday.

Magnitude got under Taco Tuesday again, popping Carter Hurd's robot up twice and flipping itself over on the second attack. Chad New's robot promptly righted itself, but went weapon-to-weapon with its opponent in order to do so. This engagement benefitted Magnitude more, as it was also able to rip two of Taco Tuesday's weapon belts.

Taco Tuesday vs Magnitude3

Sparks fly as Magnitude is flipped over.

As the halfway point approached, Magnitude tore into Taco Tuesday's shell before meeting it head-on once more, deflecting it back into the corner. The vicious eggbeater ripped a chunk of the shell away with its next hit, but bounced away as its own weapon was slamming into the BattleBox floor.

Magnitude continued its assault on Taco Tuesday's shell and Carter Hurd's robot consistently bounced back upright, but its remaining weapon belts were loose and the drisc itself was no longer spinning. Taco Tuesday drifted into the Upper Deck before facing Magnitude again. Magnitude landed several more glancing shots on Taco Tuesday before time ran out.

Despite Magnitude's dominance, the crowd cheered loud for both teams and a draw was ultimately declared.

Magnitude vs. Taco Tuesday (3/24/2024)

Magnitude front wedge PG 2024

Magnitude with its wedge, decorated for Taco Tuesday.

Magnitude fought Taco Tuesday again during the Sunday show. This time, Magnitude opted for its front wedge configuration, taking it back up to 250lbs.

Both robots slowly met in the middle of the arena, but did not make contact as Taco Tuesday evaded Magnitude's weaponry. Chad New's robot got its wedge underneath Taco Tuesday momentarily, but it slipped away. Taco Tuesday was not so fortunate to escape damage in the next attack, however, as Magnitude tore into its shell and tossed it onto the housing for the screws.

Taco Tuesday Magnitude 2 OOTA

Magnitude achieves the ring-out.

Taco Tuesday rolled back onto its wheels and drove over Magnitude, losing part of its armor in the process. Magnitude then delivered a big hit which launched Taco Tuesday up and out of the arena after just sixteen seconds.

As Magnitude drove away, Taco Tuesday was deemed immobile and Magnitude picked up the win.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to its reveal via YouTube, Magnitude was teased on Reddit through several edited movie posters.[6][7][8][9][10][11]
  • During Magnitude's construction, 3D printed parts were used as mock-ups in place of metal.
    • This was in part due to parts being delayed, contributing to their last minute withdrawal from their Manta fights.
