MaDCatTer, sometimes stylized as MadCatter or Mad Catter, is a heavyweight robot built by Team Bad Kitty which has competed in every season of BattleBots since World Championship IV, including BattleBots: Bounty Hunters and both series of BattleBots: Champions.

The robot was built by college students mentored by their team leader, Martin Mason. MadCatter itself was originally armed with an electric axe and two lifting arms, using nine brushless motors in total: three for the axe and three for each of the two lifting arms. With each drive pod and respective lifting arm being independently powered and driven, as well as the central axe unit, the team described MadCatter as "essentially three robots built into one". MadCatter also had a vertical spinner configuration, which went unused in its debut year.

Its name is a pun on The Mad Hatter, a character from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. This theme is further exemplified by the bot's art designed to resemble the Cheshire Cat, and its alternative format MaDCatTer was specifically done to fit a zany concept, according to team member Thomas Thomas.[2] MadCatter was joined by a flame-spitting minibot called Crazy Cat, which was later replaced by Gassy Cat. They were a strange exception to the tournament as the team did not apply, nor were they a reserve for the 2019 competition, but they were still allowed to compete. The major flaw of MadCatter's initial modular design was that it was easy to break apart, as seen in two of its fights where MadCatter was split between its drive pods. As well as this, its weaponry was largely disappointing as neither its axe nor lifting arms were used to great effect, and it did not make the tournament bracket as a result.

For World Championship V, MadCatter returned a considerably more potent machine. The team largely ditched the ineffective axe, though it was seen one time against Malice, and opted to lead with modular spinning weaponry. Each weapon required a lithium polymer battery with different specifications to cope with its demands, though MadCatter's main configuration for featured a thick vertical disk spinner and single lifting arm. MadCatter also had different spinners to choose from, including a bar and single-toothed spinning disks. Though the team had lost Emmanuel Carrillo, who split off to form Big Dill for the 2020 season, MadCatter found success in its Fight Night rounds, becoming one of only a few bots to hit 3-0. Despite its run of wins however, this was immediately halted by Tombstone in the Round of 32.

MadCatter would go on to reach the bracket final in BattleBots: Bounty Hunters, but lost out to eventual Bounty winner ROTATOR, one step shy of fighting Bronco.

MadCatter returned for World Championship VI with a new design, now boasting a 48lb spinning disk, which was positioned slightly to one side of the bot as opposed to being central. The team installed brand new 15KW weapon motors to improve its reliability, as well as a rebuilt drive train consisting of six drive motors instead of four. Ahead of the season, Team Bad Kitty confirmed Big Dill's Emmanuel Carrillo led with design, though competed with his own robot during the season and assisted with the driving of multibot Jäger. After a win over Yeti, MadCatter earned its first Main Event as it faced SawBlaze in Episode 4. However, MadCatter lost by KO after SawBlaze was able to disable their lifter and cause visible damage throughout. After beating Rampage in the final episode of Fight Night, MadCatter's 2-1 record was enough for a Top 32 spot. However, after a close encounter with Black Dragon, the team's run for the Giant Nut was cut short.

In June 2022, MadCatter was selected to compete in the re:MARS all:STARS BattleBots Challenge, but lost in the first round to Hydra.

MadCatter then returned first Sin City Slugfest bracket of BattleBots: Champions I.[3] It fought in the Gigabyte bracket, picking up wins over Triple Crown and Claw Viper, but lost to the episode's winner, HyperShock.

Madcatter wcvii hero shot

MadCatter was officially confirmed to be competing in World Championship VII by BattleBots themselves, placing MadCatter #20 in their Pre-Season Power Rankings.[4] Team member Kenny Hu also confirmed a brand new paint scheme for MadCatter ahead of the competition.[5] Their season began with a dominant display over the 2020 season runner-up Whiplash, winning by knockout, but the team found themselves pegged back to 1-1 following a Main Event loss to Riptide. MadCatter returned to form with a win over a much-improved Big Dill, but lost its final Fight Night battle in spectacular fashion to Lock-Jaw. Once again in the Round of 32, MadCatter defeated Claw Viper before losing to eventual runner-up HUGE in the Round of 16.

In July 2024, it was revealed that MadCatter would return for the upcoming mini-tournaments known as BattleBots FaceOffs.[6] The robot was rebuilt from the ground up, with the only parts transferred over being those making up its weapon gearbox. MadCatter now also featured vulcanized rubber wheels for improved durability, and the front two were slightly smaller than the rear wheels. This new frame also contained new aluminum drive rails in addition to its mostly welded chassis. The frame allowed for the vertical spinner to sit centrally, and no longer featured the lifting arm. For this tournament, it was driven by Coleman Christy. MadCatter finished 2-1 after its three battles, losing only to group winner Skorpios.

Outside BattleBots[]

Prior to its BattleBots debut, the build which became MadCatter competed in RoboGames 2018 under the name Cataclysm. After receiving a first round bye, Cataclysm beat Shape-Shifter in Round 2 before losing out to Gruff. It entered the loser's bracket and scored wins over Khaos and Ragin Scotsman, but a loss to Lucky sealed its exit from the competition.

Team Bad Kitty signed up for the July 2022 Robotica event in Houston, Texas with a sportsman-legal version of MadCatter armed with just its lifter and named HappyCatter. It finished 5th overall after losing to Lil Pip Resurrected, but beating Orly and NEUMATIK. HappyCatter then lost to Deferred Maintenance, beat Slammo! before losing to Avalanche.

MadCatter also competed in RoboGames 2023, again as Cataclysm. In its first fight, it faced a penguin-themed vertical spinner called The Emperor, winning by knockout after tearing a wheel off its opponent. Cataclysm proceeded to earn another win against Ziggy Jr., avenging a previous defeat to CM Robotics at RoboGames 2018, before reaching the overall final following further victories against Ragin Scotsman and White Rabbit. This enabled it to face Manta, though it would sustain severe damage in the first match-up which prompted Martin Mason to forfeit the second. As a result, Cataclysm emerged as the runner-up of the 2023 heavyweight championship.

In June 2024, MadCatter was displayed at the San Francisco Open Sauce event along with a handful of other competitors.

MadCatter vs. Railgun MAX

Railgun MAX vs Mad Catter

MadCatter hits Railgun MAX's drum with its axe.

Railgun MAX Mad Catter

MadCatter gets split in half by Railgun MAX.

MadCatter's first ever match was against Chinese representatives Railgun MAX. As the match began, MadCatter took an early shot from Railgun MAX, spinning it around and stopping it temporarily before shoving it into the screws. MadCatter struggled to get mobile again, so Railgun MAX turned to send Crazy Cat flying before returning its attention to the main bot. MadCatter managed to pivot to face Railgun MAX, firing its hammer towards the eggbeater spinner in an attempt to stop the weapon, but was unable to do much of note. Railgun MAX backed off to build up speed, charging back in and slamming into MadCatter again. This attack visibly caused the mounts connecting the right-side drive pod to falter, nearly falling off as it attempted to stay mobile. MadCatter swung its hammer, trying anything to get back into the fight, but Railgun MAX responded aggressively by landing one final attack that completely split the drive pod off. MadCatter landed on its side, now completely flat due to the damage sustained. It swung the hammer desperately, trying to flip itself over, but to no avail. Railgun MAX backed away, and MadCatter could only flail helplessly as it was counted out, starting its rookie season off with a loss.

MadCatter then had a match with Ragnarök that never was aired on Science Channel, but was aired in South Korea. MadCatter was also looking for its first win and was accompanied with its minibot Crazy Cat, which was armed with a flamethrower. MadCatter started off rather poorly as it took repeated hits from Ragnarök and lost pieces of its armor and half its drive system. Ragnarök had also lost half its drive, so the fight was left to both robots to try and approach one another in arc movements. MadCatter was unable to land any more hits and took more damage before its minibot held out by cooking Ragnarök from behind. Ragnarök stopped moving and was being counted, so MadCatter moved in for a few hits before the count out finished, giving MadCatter the win by KO at 1:16.

MadCatter vs. BattleSaw

BattleSaw Mad Catter

BattleSaw destroys Crazy Cat's flamethrower.

MadCatter's next opponent was twice-rejected rookie team BattleSaw in an untelevised fight. MadCatter immediately lost its minibot's flamethrower to BattleSaw's spinning body. However, MadCatter came at BattleSaw and rammed it twice, losing a panel and bringing its axe down twice, causing no external damage. BattleSaw seemed to come to a stop, but was still twitching and trying to be a threat so MadCatter moved in a final time before BattleSaw began smoking and stopped working completely. BattleSaw was counted out, giving MadCatter win by another KO after 1:13.

MadCatter & Chronos vs. Monsoon & Ragnarök (Exhibition)

Chronos and Mad Catter vs Monsoon and Ragnarok

The four robots do battle.

MadCatter also fought with Chronos in a Tag Team exhibition match with their minibot Crazy Cat against two British bots, Monsoon and Ragnarök. As the match got underway, MadCatter started off okay, but soon had its axe head ripped off on a retraction, with Monsoon being directly behind it. MadCatter did little afterwards, but was still moving, even after it was broken apart by Monsoon. Crazy Cat was still able to high-center Monsoon temporarily, teeing it up for Chronos to hit it early on in the match, but it too was attacked and was disabled as a result. MadCatter's halves continued to remain in the fight, the red half lifting Monsoon a little, but time eventually ran out on MadCatter and Chronos. The judges awarded Monsoon and Ragnarök the unanimous decision.

MadCatter vs. Fusion

Fusion catches fire from a blow by Mad Catter

MadCatter's final blow makes Fusion on fire.

Damage done to Mad Catter from Fusion fight

MadCatter after fighting Fusion.

MadCatter's first fight of the season was against Team Whyachi's newest robot, Fusion. For this match, the team opted to use the vertical disk spinner module. MadCatter started off by box-rushing Fusion and getting kicked into the air by Fusion's drum, landing safely. Fusion landed a few small hits, including one to the side of MadCatter's wedge despite some procession issues, before the two separated. They came together again in the corner of the BattleBox, trading blows. Fusion landed a large hit to MadCatter's wheelguard, flipping itself over with the impact. After continued pressure from MadCatter and a strong shot between the counter-rotating vertical weapons, Fusion's speed controllers ruptured, causing a fire to erupt inside of Reese Ewert's bot. The attack had broken both competitors' spinning weaponry but each could still drive. MadCatter remained offensive, attempting to lift Fusion and pushing them near the pulverizer, by which time Fusion finally stopped moving. They were counted out at 2:05, giving MadCatter the win by KO.

MadCatter vs. Ribbot

Ribbot Mad Catter collision

Mad Catter vs Ribbot 2

MadCatter tosses Ribbot almost out of the arena.

MadCatter's next match of the 2020 season was against Ribbot. In preparation, MadCatter was armed with its vertical spinner and lifting forks setup as well as its minibot Toe Cutter. As the match started, Ribbot looked the stronger competitor and sent MadCatter flying a few times, though this did little damage. Having gained confidence, Ribbot then turned to attack Toe Cutter. MadCatter capitalized on the opportunity, rushing in and nearly throwing Ribbot out of the arena. The attack left Ribbot with little offense as their weapon spun down and they began emitting smoke. MadCatter had lost its own spinner and one of its lifting forks was jammed upwards, but they initiated a pushing match. Using the other lifting arm, MadCatter then flipped Ribbot on top of the minibot, leaving Ribbot temporarily hindered in movement. When Ribbot got down, they pushed MadCatter into the corner but the latter had gotten its weapon going by this point and delivered two big hits, though neither one seeming to cause any major damage. Time ran out with both robots still moving and the judges awarded a unanimous 3-0 decision in favor of MadCatter.

MadCatter vs. Malice

With the potential to be the first robot with an unbeaten record in the fight cards, MadCatter squared off against the newcomer Malice, which was also fighting to attain that honor. Due to issues experienced with its spinner in the previous match, it was equipped with the axe along with the lifting arm and large front wedge.

"There's a little story about a robot named "Malice" that followed a little "Bunny" down a rabbit hole. And you know what's down in that rabbit hole? There was a tea party run by a Mad Catter! And at the end of that tea party, there was nothing left of "Alice" but crumbs!"
— Martin Mason's pre-match spiel
Malice gets stuck on its rear end

MadCatter flips Malice on its rear end.

MadCatter started off well as its wedge deflected Malice in the first impact, MadCatter then pushed Malice around. When MadCatter impacted Malice for a third time, the drum spinner was tipped onto its rear end. Despite wobbling as it spun its wheels, Malice couldn't get down. MadCatter remained close while minibot Gassy Cat shot flames at its opponent but Malice was eventually counted out, giving MadCatter the win by KO to become the first bot unbeaten in the fight cards.

MadCatter vs. Tombstone

Mad Catter and Tombstone are sent flying

MadCatter and Tombstone are both sent flying across the arena.

MadCatter went forward into the Top 32 where, despite going undefeated and its aggressive driving style, it was giving a surprisingly low No.12 seeding where it faced former champ and No.21 seed Tombstone. For this fight, MadCatter was armed with its vertical spinner setup. This appeared to initially favor MadCatter as they attempted to box rush the former champion. However, Tombstone slipped away so MadCatter began circling, aiming to attack Tombstone's exposed wheels. After taking a hit or two, MadCatter was noticeably slower and down an active weapon. There was little for MadCatter to do at this point but take more punishment, costing it pieces of its side armor. Unfortunately, the repeated hits left MadCatter unable to drive anywhere except in a slow uncontrolled forward manner. MadCatter was counted out after taking one final hit and Tombstone was declared the winner by KO.

MadCatter takes a chunk out of ATOM#94.

MadCatter then fought in BattleBots: Bounty Hunters for a chance to win a share of $25,000 if it could win its bracket and defeat the legendary Bronco. First off, it had to face ATOM#94. It went in with its vertical disk and lifting forks setup. MadCatter raced out of its square, attempting to box rush its opponent who ducked out of the way. MadCatter remained aggressive and attacked ATOM#94 repeatedly, flipping them over and ripping pieces off. After a barrage, ATOM#94 became hung up on the arena barrier, and after MadCatter hit them again to free them they had stopped moving. ATOM#94 was counted out, giving MadCatter the win by KO and a spot in the next round of the tournament.

MadCatter's next opponent in the Bounty Hunters tournament was Bale Spear, who were fresh off a win over Chomp. MadCatter missed its first attack but was able to deliver several hits on its opponent, damaging Bale Spear's weapon and flipping it over. Bale Spear was unable to fight back as they were beached on their articulating spear whilst upside down. With the consent of their opponent, MadCatter continued attacking the disabled Bale Spear until it emitted smoke and was counted out, giving MadCatter the win by KO and a place in the semi-finals.

MadCatter vs. ROTATOR

Mad Catter vs RotatoR 2

MadCatter's left side is hit by ROTATOR.

In the semi-finals, MadCatter met ROTATOR. For this match, MadCatter used its horizontal-counter configuration with the wedge and vertical bar. They came out pretty aggressively, but neither robot gained the upper hand. After shoving ROTATOR around a bit, MadCatter received a shot to its back left wheel from its opponent's undercutter. From this point, MadCatter's weapon and left drive became intermittent, leaving it vulnerable. Receiving further attacks, smoke began to pour out of MadCatter and pieces of its armor were ripped off. MadCatter was able to briefly get its weapon going again but took further damage and became immobile, giving ROTATOR the win by KO to face Bronco.

MadCatter returned again for the 2021 season, and found itself against the redesigned Yeti. The fight began with both bots charging at one another, before they spun around to face each other again. With its forks raised, Yeti attempted to clamber on top of MadCatter and from above, but found itself popped into the air by its opponent's vertical spinner. Yeti was hit again, this time overturned, before it used its forks to right itself. However, it landed on top of MadCatter again and soon found itself at the mercy of Martin Mason's bot. MadCatter went weapon-to-weapon with its opponent, and Yeti caught the bad end of the impact having lost a weapon belt earlier in the fight. MadCatter flipped Yeti again, before landing a brutal shot which sent Greg Gibson's bot twisting through the air. Soon after, MadCatter was able to rip off one of its wheels and deform the drive shaft on that side. Unable to move as freely as before, Yeti turned into the path of MadCatter's vertical spinner and lost its entire back panel. With its electronics vulnerable to another hit, MadCatter opted to stay away as Yeti was put out of its misery and counted out. MadCatter celebrated as it handed Yeti a loss on its return to BattleBots.

MadCatter vs. SawBlaze

SawBlaze attacks the underside of MadCatter.

Their next fight was against Jamison Go and SawBlaze - a first Main Event for Martin Mason's team. For this fight, MadCatter was again accompanied by Gassy Cat and opted for their lightest spinning weapon, French Fry. However, it was SawBlaze who proved to be the aggressor from the opening seconds, getting in underneath its opponent and bringing down the hammer saw. MadCatter was rammed into the Upper Deck and then the screws, with SawBlaze landing shots which appeared to disable the lifter of MadCatter. They were next taken to the pulverizer and suffered blows from the 100lb arena hammer. With its weapon retracted, SawBlaze then reversed into Gassy Cat and damaged the minibot's lithium polymer battery, causing smoke to billow out and fill the BattleBox. MadCatter escaped the side of the Upper Deck with its own spinning weapon still active, but it had not yet landed a hit on Jamison Go's bot with half the fight gone. SawBlaze threatened a big hit to the back of MadCatter while it was pinned against the screws of the Upper Deck and delivered, lodging a tooth in the top plate of its opponent. SawBlaze then drove MadCatter into the side of the Upper Deck and the impact caused its upper plate to come away, exposing their internals. MadCatter was flipped over in the attacks that followed and SawBlaze's hammer saw bit into the underside before taking it to the pulverizer one last time. MadCatter was counted out, putting it to 1-1 for the season.

MadCatter vs. SMEEEEEEEEEEEEE (Forfeit)

MadCatter was originally billed to fight fellow 1-1 competitor SMEEEEEEEEEEEEE in the final Fight Night episode of the season, but due to damage sustained by Gigabyte in their previous fight, SMEEEEEEEEEEEEE had to withdraw and a new opponent was found for MadCatter.[7]

MadCatter vs. Rampage

Mad Catter Rampage s6 2021

MadCatter sends Rampage flying.

Following SMEEEEEEEEEEEEE's withdrawal, MadCatter rounded off its Fight Night against the Knox family and Rampage. MadCatter was quickest out of its box and dealt a frontal blow to Rampage, tearing the front strip added to improve their ground game and throwing it onto the Upper Deck. Rampage escaped, but appeared to suffer drive issues as it sat beside the BattleBox hazard. MadCatter then delivered a brutal hit to the front of Rampage, tearing the wedge off and sending the bot flying back onto the Upper Deck. Upside-down and unable to escape, Rampage was counted out and MadCatter took the win by knockout.

Calvin Iba later revealed that an entire side of MadCatter's drive had died during the final exchanges, but Rampage were fortunately already immobile.
"The receiver wires going to our speed controller had frayed and shorted. They were strain relieved and covered in a bunch of glue and tape so we couldn’t see them before the fight. Since our entire drive side runs off one receiver, it meant none of the ESCs on that side were getting signals."
— Calvin Iba explains MadCatter's unseen damage.[8]

Irrespective of this, MadCatter finished 2-1 and earned the No.15 seed for the Top 32.

MadCatter vs. Black Dragon

Black dragon mad catter s6 2021

Black Dragon and MadCatter do battle.

Now in the Top 32, MadCatter faced off against the No.18 seed Black Dragon. For this fight, MadCatter was fitted with its lifter, and a longer front wedgelet protruding from the left. As the fight started, MadCatter raced towards Black Dragon, who fired their flamethrower in response. Black Dragon was able to flip MadCatter over and shove it into the short corner, but MadCatter righted itself and escaped. Black Dragon retreated to spin its weapon back up and popped its opponent up, taking a conservative approach to their weapon usage early on. MadCatter's elongated wedgelet then locked itself underneath the front of Black Dragon and as both weapons were up to speed, MadCatter was able to rip away the Brazilian bot's left-side wedgelet. The two locked horns in the middle of the BattleBox before MadCatter drove itself into the screws of the Upper Deck and fell back as Black Dragon threatened to attack. MadCatter righted itself using its lifting arm and attacked the front of its opponent, tearing off its other wedgelet. Black Dragon was able to land hits to MadCatter's underside and gave chase as a chunk of its rear armor flew away. From this point, MadCatter was able to win the ground game more consistently and slid its wedgelet underneath the front of Black Dragon with its weapon down, punting it against the wall. Team Uai!rrior spun their weapon back up and almost returned the favor, digging into the underside of MadCatter again. Black Dragon had its opponent pinned against the paddle hazard for a brief moment as it later carried MadCatter across the BattleBox with its flamethrower blazing. MadCatter landed the final hit of the match, overturning Black Dragon as the clock hit zero. However, the judges awarded a split decision in favor of Black Dragon, eliminating Martin Mason's team from the competition.

In a post-fight summary, Calvin Iba explained MadCatter's drive was not functioning properly throughout. This was simply the result of the bot's lifter raising the front wheels off the ground, which were the only two driven wheels to receive 50% more power than in previous seasons. Even though this issue could've easily been resolved by simply raising the lifting arm mid-battle, the team was completely oblivious to the cause, only finding out when it was driven in the test box post-fight.[9]

re:MARS all:STARS BattleBots Challenge (2022)[]

MadCatter vs. Hydra

MadCatter was one of eight robots selected to compete in the second re:MARS all:STARS Challenge in June 2022, where it would face Hydra in the first round of the bracket. For this fight, MadCatter opted for one of its fork configurations, with the forks protruding past the lifter.

Hydra MadCatter reMARS 2022 1

MadCatter charges Hydra

The match started with both bots rushing to the center of the BattleBox, MadCatter winning the first exchange and deflecting Hydra onto Gassy Cat. Attempting to capitalize on this advantageous position, MadCatter charged into Hydra's front. By this point, however, Hydra's forks were on the ground again, limiting MadCatter to a few light hits.

Hydra MadCatter reMARS 2022 2

MadCatter breaks an arena light, before being flipped over by Hydra

This did not stop MadCatter from pushing Hydra into the wall, with a subsequent hit shattering an arena light, and avoiding a flip by Jake Ewert's machine. MadCatter would not be so fortunate in the second exchange, as it went onto Hydra's flipping arm, and was inverted. In the process, MadCatter's disk removed the tongue from Hydra's flipper, but not without having its own fork disconnected and left loosely tethered onto the bot. This left both bots severely handicapped; MadCatter's attacks appeared to reduce the speed and reach of Hydras' arm.

Hydra MadCatter reMARS 2022 3

MadCatter is flipped onto the screws by Hydra

Quickly self-righting with its lifter, MadCatter was chased down by Hydra, which attempted to deliver MadCatter into the Killsaws. This backfired for Hydra, as it got temporarily jammed in the slots. However MadCatter was unable to take advantage of this situation, ramping onto Hydra before hitting its disconnected fork. Soon after, MadCatter's weapon mysteriously stopped.

By this point, both robots were struggling, dancing around the Killsaws without much engagement. MadCatter attempted to back away, but Hydra quickly chased, turning MadCatter around into the screws before flipping it into them. MadCatter became stuck in the screws, helplessly moving its lifter around to no avail.

Chris Rose: "Alright, so its like a mini-flip - hey, it's the first time we see somebody stuck in the Screws! Now eventually, those things will reverse and perhaps spit out MadCatter."
Will Bales: "We'll see. Like a hairball."
Pete Abrahamson: "That looks pretty jammed."
Chris Rose: "Yeah, I'm not so sure that thing's gonna get out of there!"

Unfortunately for MadCatter, the screws were unable to reverse, leaving it permanently jammed despite regaining use of its primary disk weapon. Hydra attempted to flip Gassy Cat into the Screws as well, but missed. Gassy Cat and Hydra continued to fight on, with Gassy Cat mostly flipping itself over on Hydra's front, having lost its wedge at some point in the match. Gassy Cat was flipped a short distance by Hydra before MadCatter was officially counted out, resulting in MadCatter as a whole being eliminated from the competition.

BattleBots: Champions I[]

MadCatter vs. Triple Crown

MadCatter Triple Crown

MadCatter charges at an already-immobile Triple Crown.

Returning for BattleBots: Champions I, MadCatter featured in the first Sin City Slugfest bracket where it faced Triple Crown in the opening round. As MadCatter approached, Triple Crown was unable to move from its starting square or show any signs of functionality due to a breakage in the communications link. This allowed for MadCatter to deliver a hit to the white drive pod before backing off. Following this hit, Triple Crown was quickly counted out, ending the fight after just 32 seconds.

MadCatter vs. Claw Viper

Claw Viper MadCatter KO

Claw Viper is counted out.

Advancing unscathed, MadCatter met Claw Viper in the next round. For this battle, MadCatter did not have any significant alterations aside from the reintroduction of Gassy Cat, but began facing left in its starting square to evade Claw Viper's box rush. Claw Viper immediately charged at MadCatter, who escaped and got underneath Claw Viper, pushing it into the screws of the Upper Deck momentarily. It backed away to spin up before launching Claw Viper across the Upper Deck where it landed in the short corner. This impact also broke the linkage for Claw Viper's top arm, which hung limp for much of the remaining fight. Martin Mason's bot targeted the vulnerable underbelly of Claw Viper, who kept its weaponry in a defensive position before being caught on its opponent. Claw Viper got away, but suffered more attacks from its opponent who drove it across the length of the arena and rammed it into the barrier. MadCatter backed away as Claw Viper appeared high-centered on a loose part, before dealing another hit to its back panel. The next attack appeared to kill Claw Viper's drive completely, as it was no longer able to move convincingly. MadCatter used its lifting arm to pull Claw Viper back onto its weapon, and it became evident that the reason for its hampered mobility was a snapped drive belt. Claw Viper was counted out and MadCatter advanced in the Sin City Slugfest bracket.

One step away from challenging Gigabyte, MadCatter had to overcome a very impressive HyperShock. As in its previous fights, HyperShock attempted to box-rush and stun its opponent. It did not land a big hit with the weapon, but was able to uppercut the wedgelets on the front of MadCatter and get in underneath the side to push it around. MadCatter was flipped over, but used its lifting arm to right itself as Gassy Cat attempted to ride up the front of HyperShock. MadCatter was flipped again before escaping to the center of the arena, where HyperShock gave chase and grazed the side panels. After a sharp turn, HyperShock then flipped itself over, running into the walls as it tried to keep its weapon pointed at MadCatter. Will Bales was able to ride its weapon up the front of MadCatter and eventually landed upright again, but driver Calvin Iba was able to overturn it again. HyperShock threw itself into the arena in an attempt to self-right, but a hit from MadCatter flipped it back onto all fours. This proved to be MadCatter's undoing, as HyperShock dealt several vicious hits which upended Martin Mason's bot and sent it towards the Upper Deck. After dishing out a hit to Gassy Cat, HyperShock threw MadCatter on top of the BattleBox hazard. It escaped to the short corner, but HyperShock punted it atop the Upper Deck again. This time, MadCatter escaped across the screws with its vertical spinner appearing to no longer be working as Gassy Cat was launched high into the air. MadCatter was now also without its right wedge and as it was overturned, HyperShock went to work attacking the top armor of its opponent. Parts continued to fly off as HyperShock delivered yet another vicious assault, ultimately throwing MadCatter on top of the Upper Deck one final time as it was counted out. MadCatter was eliminated from the bracket and HyperShock moved on to face Gigabyte.

World Championship VII[]

Whiplash lifts MadCatter.

Both robots immediately drove at one another, with Whiplash quickest out of its starting square. Neither robot got a strong advantage from testing one another's ground game, so MadCatter retreated and Whiplash spun down its disk. Matt Vasquez positioned Whiplash and got to the side of MadCatter, lifting it momentarily before dropping it. Both robots locked horns in the middle of the arena, but Whiplash's disk was not spinning, unlike that of MadCatter.

Whiplash MadCatter WCVII (2)

Whiplash and MadCatter square off.

Calvin Iba chased down Whiplash as the lifting arm of MadCatter raised to allow for greater reach of its vertical spinner, landing a blow to its back panel which sent Whiplash tumbling over. Whiplash recovered and faced MadCatter again, dropping its lifter into the path of MadCatter's vicious vertical spinner. MadCatter then drove towards the center of the BattleBox and as Whiplash oversteered, landed a big hit which launched the Vasquez family's bot high into the air. Upon landing, Calvin Iba was able to scoop Whiplash up from the side and spin it around, all before driving it straight into the Upper Deck. This impact caused Whiplash to fly high into the air and tore out a speed controller for its weapon, which lay strewn across the Upper Deck.[10] Whiplash itself landed in the short corner and was unable to move.

MadCatter drove around the center of the arena in celebration as Whiplash was counted out, giving MadCatter a winning start to the season.

MadCatter vs. Riptide

Looking to build on a strong start, MadCatter's second Fight Night opponent was a Main Event against the previous season's co-Rookie of the Year, Riptide. Ahead of the fight, much of the pre-fight content highlighted the controversy between Calvin Iba and Ethan Kurtz, as Iba believed Riptide was a scaled-up copy of his championship-winning beetleweight, Lynx. MadCatter featured two wedgelets of different lengths as well as a minibot, whereas Riptide sported twin forks at the front.

Riptide MadCatter WCVII teaser

MadCatter and Riptide go weapon-to-weapon.

Both robots immediately spun up and went weapon-to-weapon, causing Riptide to bounce away. MadCatter initiated another attack, but was thrown into a backflip and saw its shorter wedgelet come loose from its hinges. Riptide also lost its right fork from these exchanges, but built on its momentum, pressing MadCatter back into the blue starting square and delivering a brutal hit to its opponent, tearing away the damaged wedgelet and flipping MadCatter over.
"These are knockout shots, Chris!"
— Kenny Florian commentates as Riptide refuses to let up

Riptide madcatter KO WCVII

MadCatter is knocked out.

Before it had a chance to drive to safety, Riptide immediately followed up this attack and used its eggbeater drum to further damage MadCatter, righting it and then beating against its underside. Continuing its assault, Riptide tore a wheel from Martin Mason's machine before throwing it over the paddles, jamming its vertical spinner. MadCatter was unable to escape from this position and was counted out.

MadCatter vs. Big Dill

MadCatter's third Fight Night opponent was Emmanuel Carrillo and Big Dill.

When the match began, Big Dill approached its opponent at the center of the arena and took a shot to its left front fork. After turning around, Big Dill squared up as MadCatter charged in and got under its opponent, delivering several shots to the underside. Evident that it was winning out in the ground game department, Big Dill swiftly followed up by rushing head on, pushing MadCatter to the center of the box before kicking the vert spinner onto its back, causing MadCatter to ricochet off the deck corner and fling itself back onto the center of the box.
"Big Dill gets under MadCatter, flips him... and oh! MadCatter goes airborne!"
— Chris Rose as Big Dill kicks MadCatter onto its back

As MadCatter tried to charge at Big Dill near the screws, Big Dill responded by dodging and pushing MadCatter into the other set of screws, backing into a screw barrier in the process. After squaring up, Big Dill caught an approaching MadCatter in its grasp and slammed it back into the screws.

"Those forks on Big Dill are working beautifully, Chris. They've gotten under MadCatter on every exchange."
— Kenny Florian taking note of how effective Big Dill's ground game has been in the match so far

After maneuvering near the deck corner, Big Dill bumped its left side on MadCatter as the latter was charging in, and the two started clashing forks once more. After catching MadCatter's wedgelet from the right side and turning left to slip past its grasp, Big Dill repositioned and capitalized on MadCatter oversteering and rushed in head-to-head, delivering a couple shots and pushing MadCatter into the corner. After separating, Big Dill tried to go after the opponent's vertical spinning minibot, but MadCatter took advantage of this distraction, pinning Big Dill against the wall and grinding into the left wheel guard. After retreating to the center of the arena, Big Dill circled around and clashed head on from a left angle. Big Dill turned left and retreated, before turning around and charging head on in the center of the box, kicking MadCatter back. As MadCatter tried to maneuver, Big Dill repositioned itself on the blue B and approached head on once more, delivering four shots to the right fork before slamming it into the screw support and getting into a shoving match that led back to the center.

"WOAH! Here goes Emmanuel Carrillo taking MadCatter for a serious ride."
— Chris Rose as Big Dill strikes MadCatter and starts pushing around to the center

Madcatter big dill wcvii teaser

Big Dill and MadCatter go weapon-to-weapon.

After charging into the center deck barrier and taking a shot to the left rear wheel from MadCatter, Big Dill turned around and clashed head on once more, this time locking forks. Just as MadCatter was about to push Big Dill into the corner, Big Dill reversed to the right, swung around along with MadCatter, and delivered multiple shots to the front forks before shunting MadCatter into the corner wall. Big Dill swiftly retreated to the slots near the red square until it turned around and clashed head-to-head once again, knocking both bots back. Big Dill briefly retreated before turning back to the center of the arena for another clash, but due to angling too far to the left, it took a direct shot to the right front wheel from MadCatter's disk. After reversing past the blue square with MadCatter giving chase, it became clear that the previous hit jammed up the right front wheel and hindered mobility. Nonetheless, Big Dill approached MadCatter once more near the slots and clashed disks while locking forks, attempting its first lift of the match.
"MadCatter looks like they're on the hunt now playing a little cat and mouse, but Big Dill won't back down."
— Chris Rose as Big Dill locks horns with MadCatter

Big Dill then hooked its left forks in an attempt to get in another shoving match before relenting and squaring up for another charge from MadCatter, this time getting kicked against the screw support. After retreating, Big Dill circled past the blue B and back to MadCatter near the blue square for another clash, creating a shower of sparks. After quickly spinning and taking shots to the left side and forks in the process, Big Dill turned its back in the center and took a shot to the right rear tire. Big Dill tried to turn around but oversteered and took another hit to the right side. As it escaped from the center logo, Big Dill spun around again and took a glancing shot to the left side before getting under again and attempting another lift, right as MadCatter did the same. Big Dill immediately followed up by shunting MadCatter and slamming it into the center deck barrier.
"But look at Big Dill. Still has some serious drive!"
— Chris Rose as Big Dill runs MadCatter into the deck screw support

Big Dill Mad Catter Sparks

Disks clash and sparks fly as Big Dill shunts MadCatter towards the Upper Deck.

After taking a glancing shot to the left side, Big Dill spun and reversed out of the center logo, Big Dill used its left fork to get under MadCatter briefly before the latter responded by striking the left side once more at the center logo. After retreating to the red square near the screws, Big Dill tried to approach for another head-to-head clash, but due to its disabled right front wheel, it instead turned right and allowed MadCatter to deliver a huge strike that hurled Big Dill onto the screws. Big Dill retaliated by turning right towards MadCatter near the screws and clashing head-to-head, yet again winning the ground game and creating a burst of sparks.
"Oh, and how about another reversal from Big Dill, and the palms of Calvin Iba have got to be getting sweaty."
— Kenny Florian as Big Dill returns the favor

After retreating again, Big Dill followed up by getting to the left side of MadCatter and shoving it into the right-side screws. Smoke arose from Big Dill's burning tires as both bots engaged in a pushing match locking their left wedgelets together until MadCatter reversed into the corner. As Big Dill tried to crabwalk away, it took a major strike to the left rear wheel from MadCatter's disk. After taking another shoving and grinding to that wheel, Big Dill turned around next to the red square and locked forks with MadCatter yet again, lowering its lifter on its opponent as the latter reversed into an inactive screw section. Big Dill spun around and took another hit to the left side wheelguard before taking a shot to its backside and getting its left side forks shoved into a killsaw slot, where it took several grindings to the backside and left rear wheel.

"Big Dill significantly slowing down here. They might be stuck!"
— Kenny Florian as Big Dill gets its forks pushed into the killsaw slots by MadCatter

After being freed, Big Dill took a couple more minor blows to the rear end before turning around, attempting, and gaining a partial lift from MadCatter's right side, just as its right rear wheel popped off. After taking a killsaw shot, Big Dill pirouetted back into the red square before turning around and getting bumped into a left side screw support. Big Dill spun around again and backed into the space between the center support and the inactive screw section, where it took one last strike to the right rear wheel guard from MadCatter before the fight made the distance.

Chris Rose: "I'll tell ya, Big Dill showed MadCatter it meant business."
Kenny Florian: "Yeah, no question about it. No hesitation on the part of Emmanuel Carrillo, just went right at MadCatter, and that's really MadCatter's game."
Chris Rose: "Well these two captains know each other very well. Big Dill setup perfectly with those long front forks, able to keep MadCatter's vert at bay for long stretches of the match."
— Summing up Big Dill's performance in this match

Despite Big Dill's dominance in the first half, MadCatter's mid-fight resurgence was enough to persuade the judges, who ruled unanimously in favor of the latter. As such, MadCatter advanced to a 2-1 record.

MadCatter vs. Lock-Jaw

MadCatter's fourth and final Fight Night opponent was a former semi-finalist in Lock-Jaw. Looking to lock in a high seeding, Gassy Cat returned for this bout, and was this time joined by a flamethrowing minibot called Lil Bubbles.

MadCatter Lock-Jaw WCVII

MadCatter and Lock-Jaw test one another's drive power.

Calvin Iba immediately charged at Lock-Jaw, swinging around to face its opponent as both vertical spinners fired up. The pair met head-on, with Lock-Jaw's drone Spitfire becoming caught in the crossfire.
"Oh, there goes the drone! Spitfire, we hardly knew ya..."
— Chris Rose as Spitfire is sacrificed by Lock-Jaw

MadCatter Lock-Jaw WCVII 1

Lock-Jaw spins to face MadCatter.

MadCatter and Lock-Jaw locked horns, engaging in a pushing match with both spinners up to speed. It was Martin Mason's robot which caused sparks to fly as its disk grazed the front of Donald Hutson's bot, tearing away some armor. Lock-Jaw turned but MadCatter honed in on its underside, damaging its front-right wheel.
Chris Rose: "Lock-Jaw... that front-right tire's got an issue. That looks like it's almost off- OH!"
Kenny Florian: "OH, WHAT A SHOT BY LOCK-JAW!"
— Chris and Kenny react as Lock-Jaw fights back
Despite the damage, Lock-Jaw turned to face MadCatter again, who backed towards the short corner. Donald Hutson charged towards his opponent in an attempt to turn the tide, popping MadCatter into the air as it landed against one of the paddles.

MadCatter Lock-Jaw WCVII 2

MadCatter is sent to the short corner.

Now it was MadCatter's turn to experience damage to its drive as its left side appeared to have seized up. Though it escaped the corner, Calvin Iba struggled to show any movement beyond twitching back and forth, though this was enough to satisfy the new mobility rules for World Championship VII.
Chris Rose: "Still two more minutes. I don't know if MadCatter can survive, Kenny!"
Kenny Florian: "Well, Calvin Iba doing everything he can to prevent MadCatter from being counted out. Lock-Jaw is gonna have to keep engaging and that is a dangerous proposition with MadCatter's weapon still very much alive."
— Chris and Kenny react as Lock-Jaw tussles with Gassy Cat

Lock-Jaw MadCatter lights hit WCVII

Lock-Jaw sends MadCatter's wedge into the ceiling.

After focusing on Gassy Cat momentarily, Lock-Jaw turned its attention back towards Martin Mason's bot. The former Giant Nut winner drove into the front of MadCatter, evading its weapon while launching its right wedgelet into the roof, shattering one of the lights. As glass rained down on the BattleBox floor, Lock-Jaw continued to attack before MadCatter appeared to shake off its mobility issues and escaped the screws of the Upper Deck.
"They're moving now!"
— Kenny Florian

MadCatter Lock-Jaw WCVII 3

MadCatter begins to mount a comeback.

Looking to make up for lost time, MadCatter rushed towards Lock-Jaw, landing a direct hit to its front and throwing its opponent over. Lock-Jaw landed upside-down, partially stuck on its hinged fork which had bent back upon landing. As it tried to use the gyroscopic forces of its weapon to right itself, MadCatter hung back, again appearing to struggle with its drive. Lock-Jaw eventually bounced its disk into the floor, springing the former semi-finalist back onto its wheels. However, its forks were now bent and its shredded tire was on the verge of coming off completely.
Kenny Florian: "Look at this driving from Donald Hutson; he's trying to self-right here... trying to go on one of the wheels, and he does! Oh my goodness!!"
Martin Mason: "Nicely done, Donald!"
— Kenny Florian and Martin Mason react to Lock-Jaw's late recovery

MadCatter Lock-Jaw WCVII 4

MadCatter is counted out with a second left on the clock.

Lock-Jaw hobbled towards MadCatter, who was now immobile in front of the drivers' booths. As a count began, but referee David Sanfilippo was counting against the clock as the fight entered its last ten seconds. Lock-Jaw began smoking and a dramatic knockout was declared with under a second left on the clock.

After a back-and-forth affair, MadCatter finished its Fight Night campaign with a 2-2 record.

MadCatter vs. Claw Viper

MadCatter made the Round of 32 seeded No.22, where it took on the impressive No.11 seed, Claw Viper. This served as a rematch from BattleBots: Champions I.

MadCatter Claw Viper WCVII 1

Both robots look for an early opening.

Claw Viper predictably charged straight at its opponent, bulldozing its way through Gassy Cat to meet MadCatter in the center of the BattleBox. As MadCatter's disk got up to speed, Claw Viper tried to grab and missed, but got its lower jaw underneath its opponent instead, almost tipping the No.22 seed over. In an attempt to outdrive Calvin Iba, Kevin Milczewski accidentally drove into the wall before facing MadCatter again, getting a hold of its front-right corner and ramming Martin Mason's machine into the wall.

Claw Viper MadCatter sign WCVII

As MadCatter is pinned, Claw Viper chews on the BattleBots sign.

Gassy Cat then found itself caught and flung into the vertical spinner of MadCatter itself, disabling the minibot. Though MadCatter was able to keep its weapon pointed at the No.11 seed and remained dangerous, Claw Viper pinned it against the rails in front of both drivers and damaged the signage. Referee David Sanfilippo instructed Kevin Milczewski to release so he obliged, but dragged MadCatter back as well as the robots appeared interlocked.

MadCatter Claw Viper WCVII 3

Claw Viper upends MadCatter and rams it into the corner.

MadCatter then took advantage by grinding away as Claw Viper's side armor and pushing it into the corner, ultimately getting underneath and then freeing itself. Having tanked each of its opponent's attacks up to this point, Claw Viper managed to tip the No.22 seed back and drive it into the wall. MadCatter was not granted time to self-right before Claw Viper was underneath it again, carrying Martin Mason's robot across the arena and swinging MadCatter into the housing for the screws on the opposite side of the BattleBox.

MadCatter Claw Viper WCVII 4

Claw Viper loses its grabbing arm.

With half the fight gone, MadCatter needed to get a foothold in this Round of 32 clash as it self-righted on top of Claw Viper. However, in an error by Kevin Milczewski, Claw Viper's grabbing arm dropped into the path of MadCatter's vertical spinner, tearing a significant part of its primary weapon away.
Chris Rose: "Ohh, Claw Viper digging into it, chomping it up!"
Kenny Florian: "...but lost its lifting arm in the process. Kevin Milczewski dropping it right into the disk of MadCatter. He may regret that choice. "
— Chris and Kenny react as Claw Viper's attack comes at a cost

MadCatter Claw Viper WCVII 5

MadCatter prevents Claw Viper from self-righting.

MadCatter was driven back by Claw Viper, but the controlbot could no longer grapple and the tide soon turned as Calvin Iba drove his team's bot into the side of Claw Viper, flipping it over. Claw Viper landed inverted in the short corner, with just its rear two wheels making contact with the floor.
"C'mon Calvin, get me up! Let's have some fun, buddy."
— Kevin Milczewski encourages MadCatter driver Calvin Iba to help him self-right late in the match

MadCatter Claw Viper WCVII 6

Claw Viper maneuvers out of the corner as the clock hits zero.

The vertical spinner of MadCatter had now been powered down as Claw Viper appeared unable to right itself without assistance. Its armor had been bucked towards the front-left of the robot and as the seconds ticked down, the fight went to the judges.

Claw Viper MadCatter post appeal WCVII

Both captains show respect as MadCatter moves on.

In a back-and-forth Top 32 match, a split judges' decision was announced and MadCatter was declared the winner. Though Kevin Milczewski opted to launch an Appeal, he was unsuccessful and the original decision stuck, confirming MadCatter's place in the Round of 16.

MadCatter vs. HUGE

Hugepoon

MadCatter's HUGE-poon.

Now in the Top 16 for the first time in its career, MadCatter faced the No.6 seed HUGE, who was undefeated in its five fights so far this season. As was alluded to in the previous episode's Road to the Giant Nut after-show, Martin Mason equipped the robot with a harpoon-style attachment called the "HUGE-poon".
"Lemme tell you our plan to beat them. We've built a special attachment; we're a little tiny bot, we're a little guy. They're a great big guy, but you know what, David versus Goliath, you know how that ends! This is gonna be about control, and you're gonna see if MadCatter can get out there and move meow-ntains!"
— Martin Mason ahead of the fight

HUGE MadCatter WCVII 1

MadCatter's gas tank comes off and is hit by HUGE.

MadCatter's attachment immediately started spewing fire as HUGE approached, but lost part of its top armor as Jonathan Schultz's robot attacked from above. MadCatter's Calvin Iba fought back, delivering an instant counterattack with its vertical spinner but losing the tank for its flamethrower in the process. HUGE turned in place and struck the tank, causing an explosion of compressed gas as a weapon belt was also strewn on the BattleBox floor.

HUGE MadCatter WCVII 2

MadCatter rips into HUGE's wheel.

Calvin Iba continued to circle HUGE, hitting and tearing a visible chunk out of its left-side wheel. HUGE hit MadCatter head-on and flipped it over in retaliation, but as the No.22 seed self-righted, HUGE drove into the front of MadCatter again and sent shrapnel into the ceiling, shattering lights on the other side of the arena. While some of HUGE's tread was now coming loose on its right wheel, MadCatter's UMHW attachment had been bent out of place.

HUGE MadCatter WCVII 3

HUGE baits MadCatter into its bar spinner.

MadCatter continued circling HUGE, but Jonathan Schultz opted against turning to face its opponent and instead reversed, feeding MadCatter into its blade as it spun downward and spitting it out.
"MadCatter takes another big shot there, Chris, and you can see how frustrating it is to fight HUGE. Calvin Iba's trying to attack different angles, but HUGE is so big and it doesn't really matter! It's like watching a fighter jet try to take down King Kong."
— Kenny Florian

HUGE MadCatter WCVII 4

MadCatter tries to attack, but HUGE evades it.

HUGE continued to strike MadCatter, tearing parts away and eventually ripping the HUGE-poon attachment off too. This impact also appeared to have killed MadCatter's primary weapon as its championship-winning driver attempted to control HUGE from its sides. With its only hope now to remain aggressive and break HUGE's own weapon, MadCatter shepherded its opponent towards the corner. In this moment, HUGE's weapon did momentarily seize up due to issues concerning its bushings causing the bar to lock whenever it shifted sideways from impacts.[2] It momentarily fired back up, but slowed again.
Chris Rose: "Under a minute to go! HUGE's weapon is back up spinning... well, now it's not."
Kenny Florian: "Might just be showing the judges it still works..."
— Chris and Kenny react as HUGE's weapon begins working intermittently

HUGE MadCatter WCVII JD

HUGE demonstrates it still has power in its weapon.

MadCatter got to the inside of HUGE's wheel and dragged it towards the blue starting square, but HUGE slipped away from danger, attempting to use its stabilizing arms as makeshift thwackers as the clock hit zero.
"Oh, and there it is! HUGE spinning the weapon back up, showing the judges it is A-OK."
— Kenny Florian as HUGE undergoes post-fight functionality checks

The fight went the distance, and HUGE was able to prove it had life in its primary weapon. All three judges voted unanimously in HUGE's favor, ending MadCatter's season in the Round of 16.

BattleBots: Champions II[]

MadCatter vs. Bloodsport

MadCatter returned for BattleBots: Champions II, where it faced off against Bloodsport in Round 1 of the second Sin City Slugfest bracket.

MadCatter pre Bloodsport Champions II

The knockout shot.

MadCatter began the fight with its lifter raised as Bloodsport wasted no time spinning its blade up, driving forward before retreating as MadCatter closed in. As Calvin Iba turned MadCatter, Bloodsport slammed its bar into its opponent's plow, causing Bloodsport to twist through the air and land inverted in the corner. Smoke began coming from Justin Marple's bot and there appeared to be no life from the weapon.

MadCatter looked on, waving its lifting arm at its beaten opponent as a count began and its place in the next round was confirmed. MadCatter did not come out of this fight unscathed, however, as it suffered a large split down its plow and suffered damage to its disk.

MadCatter vs. Black Dragon

MadCatter's next opponent was Black Dragon in a rematch from World Championship VI Round of 32 stage, where the Brazilian team came out on top. Pre-fight, MadCatter captain Martin Mason expressed confidence that Gabriel Bertozzi would make a driving error which Calvin Iba, driver of MadCatter, would be able to capitalize upon. The robot itself abandoned its plow in favor of wedgelets, and was again joined by Gassy Cat.

Black Dragon MadCatter BB Champs 2 1

MadCatter throws Black Dragon around in the opening seconds.

The fight began with MadCatter charging down Black Dragon, drifting around to meet it head-on before popping it into the air with its vertical spinner. Proving itself as the lower robot early on, Calvin Iba drove Black Dragon back toward the Upper Deck, and the Brazilian robot lost its right-side attachment.

Black Dragon MadCatter BB Champs 2 2

MadCatter takes Black Dragon to the short corner.

Black Dragon's eggbeater drum was halted by MadCatter, who shoved the Brazilian robot into the short corner and under the pulverizer. MadCatter drove away, allowing Gabriel Bertozzi to escape and for Team Uai!rrior to spin their weapon back up. Black Dragon struck Gassy Cat as it sought to pursue its opponent, attacking the front of MadCatter before their weapon slowed to a standstill. Even without its weapon, MadCatter was able to slide its wedges underneath and force Black Dragon into the spiked rails.

Black Dragon MadCatter BB Champs 2 3

Both bots go weapon-to-weapon.

Martin Mason's robot became caught in the killsaw slots momentarily, which allowed Black Dragon to get to its side and grind against its armor. Calvin Iba expertly weaved around its attacks, however, escaping further punishment and bouncing Black Dragon into the screws.
Kenny Florian: "MadCatter's been impressive so far..."
Chris Rose: "Yeah, but its weapon... non-functional right now, Kenny. I don't know if it's been shut down by choice or not."
— Kenny Florian and Chris Rose assess the first half of the fight

Black Dragon MadCatter BB Champs 2 4

Both bots lock horns.

As Black Dragon attacked Gassy Cat again, MadCatter gave chase and oversteered, allowing the Brazilian bot to deliver a hit to its rear, upending MadCatter. Though its weapon appeared disabled rather than powered down on purpose, Calvin Iba continued to use the robot's drive power to control Black Dragon where possible, pinning it against the Upper Deck.

Black Dragon MadCatter BB Champs 2 5

Black Dragon flips MadCatter.

Black Dragon escaped and attacked MadCatter again, popping it up into the air and destroying Gassy Cat as the larger robot accidentally swept up its teammate. The 2020 season semi-finalist got underneath MadCatter again, overturning its opponent and then landing a series of hits to its frame with under a minute to go.

MadCatter damage post Black Dragon Champs II

MadCatter's side armor was now peeled up, exposing its right-front wheel, and its front was chewed up from an accumulation of attacks. This did not deter driver Calvin Iba, who was able to shove Black Dragon back into the rails in the closing stages. To the surprise of Chris Rose and Kenny Florian, MadCatter's primary weapon began to spin up again in the final seconds as the fight went to the judges.
Chris Rose: "MadCatter dazed, confused and now... oh my goodness, did its weapon come back to life?!"
Kenny Florian: "Wow..."
Chris Rose: "Well, well, well, what do we have here in the final few ticks?"
Kenny Florian: "Very interesting."

In spite of its late display of weapon functionality, the judges voted unanimously in favor of Black Dragon, ending MadCatter's hunt for the Golden Bolt at the semi-final stage. Team Bad Kitty would not go away empty-handed, however, as the team won the Founder's Award.

BattleBots FaceOffs[]

MadCatter vs. Roundhouse

MadCatter returned to the BattleBox for BattleBots FaceOffs. Its first group opponent was Roundhouse - a new robot from the team which previously fought with Deadlift.

MadCatter vs Roundhouse 1 FaceOffs

MadCatter clashes with Roundhouse.

MadCatter charged at Roundhouse, but the RoboGym Robotics machine evaded this and got its weapon up to speed. A second hit popped Roundhouse into the air, loosening part of its decoration but more importantly, dislodging one of Roundhouse's chains. MadCatter scooped up Roundhouse's minibot, charging at the main robot and managing to overturn it.

Roundhouse vs MadCatter 2 FaceOffs

MadCatter drives Roundhouse into the corner.

Undeterred by its opponent's flamethrower, MadCatter gathered Roundhouse and rammed it into the short corner, damaging its rear armor. It then took advantage of Roundhouse driving into the Upper Deck and approached again, violently throwing Roundhouse back into the corner.

Roundhouse vs MadCatter KO FaceOffs

MadCatter retreats as Roundhouse is immobile.

Roundhouse landed upright, but damage to its back armor meant a section had twisted downward, causing it to become high-centered. Roundhouse was unable to escape this position and MadCatter won the fight by knockout.

MadCatter vs. Calypso

MadCatter also took on a new robot from Team Horizon called Calypso. It was again armed with its heavy front plow, which proved effective in MadCatter's last outing. Unbeknownst to the team, however, lasting damage from its previous fight meant the plow was rubbing against the arena floor, affecting MadCatter's ability to drive straight.[11]

As Coleman Christy drove MadCatter towards its opponent, the ground clearance of its plow was immediately breached by Calypso's forks, prompting celebration from Team Horizon. The undercutting blade of Calypso cut into MadCatter's plow, but also separated the robots as MadCatter looked to recalibrate.

Steve Judkins: "Woah, look at the speed!"
Bil Dwyer: "Speed on that."
— Steve and Bil praise MadCatter's agility early on
Calypso MadCatter 1 FaceOffs

MadCatter struggles to get underneath Calypso.

MadCatter drove away, crashing into the arena wall before maneuvering around to Calypso's rear and threatening to slice into its exposed wheel. However, Coleman Christy struggled to drive straight as the gear on the rear-right wheel had broken from hitting the rail.[11] MadCatter instead rode up the forks of Calypso - first the left pair and then the right.

MadCatter vs Calypso big hit

MadCatter tears out Calypso's weapon.

Once MadCatter was able to evade the forks, its disk made contact with the blade of Calypso, causing the crab-themed machine to fly through the air. More crucially for Martin Mason's team though, MadCatter had completely ripped the bulk of Calypso's weapon system out of its chassis, including the disk, pulley and belts.

Calypso MadCatter KO FaceOffs

MadCatter looks on as the count begins.

Calypso twitched in place but then stopped moving altogether. MadCatter retreated as a count commenced, sealing a second win by knockout for MadCatter with Coleman Christy as their driver.

MadCatter vs. Skorpios

MadCatter pre Skorpios FaceOffs

MadCatter pre-fight.

MadCatter's third and final opponent was Skorpios. For this group-decider, the plow was replaced by twin forks at the front, and the team added armor to its top as well as solid TPU armor protecting the sides.

Skorpios MadCatter FaceOffs 2

MadCatter flips Skorpios over, but it promptly self-rights.

While Skorpios maneuvered towards the drivers' booths to spin up its blade, MadCatter stayed central before narrowly missing a charge with its own weapon also active. The pair met head-on with MadCatter showing signs of having the lower front end, but it was Skorpios which delivered the first attack with its primary weapon, landing a blow to its layered TPU and abrasion-resistant steel top armor. MadCatter was then able to drive Skorpios into the wall as it met the former Bounty slayer from the side, following this up with an uppercut to its front, and then a second hit which overturned Skorpios.

Skorpios MadCatter FaceOffs 3

Skorpios disables the weapon of MadCatter.

Weapons operator Diana Tarlson was able to right Skorpios, and with just over thirty seconds gone, pinned MadCatter against the rails and snapped its weapon belt with its next attack. This rendered MadCatter's vertical spinner useless for the remainder of the fight - something which went unnoticed by Bil Dwyer and Steve Judkins.

Skorpios MadCatter FaceOffs 4

MadCatter and Skorpios enter a stalemate.

With MadCatter reduced to a pushbot, it quickly re-engaged and slid its forks under Skorpios' front. Skorpios fought back, swinging its weapon twice and landing with the second attack before MadCatter rammed Skorpios back into the red starting square. Though MadCatter was winning the battle for low ground, it kept receiving overhead blows to its weapon mechanism as it drove Skorpios into the Upper Deck and then back into the middle of the arena.

Skorpios vs MadCatter FaceOffs Upper Deck

MadCatter takes Skorpios to the Upper Deck late on.

Both teams fought for an advantage as Coleman Christy was again able to force Skorpios back into the wall, pinning it momentarily while wary to avoid the hammer saw. As Skorpios fired up its disk once again, MadCatter maneuvered around to its back and was able to ram its opponent into and then on top of the Upper Deck hazard. Skorpios escaped with thirty seconds remaining, powering its weapon up again but finding itself held in the corner by MadCatter. One final charge from MadCatter signaled the end of the fight.

The live audience cheered loudest for Skorpios, which had disabled MadCatter's primary weapon early on in the battle and caused the most damage, meaning MadCatter finished runner-up in its group.
