Lycan was a robot built by All Black Robotics which competed exclusively in BattleBots World Championship II.

Its active weapon is a small jaw powered by an electric cam system, meaning it would continuously move up and down. Due to its sloped front, the grappling jaw could also function as a makeshift lifter, though Lycan found more success using it as a wedge. The front of Lycan also featured a 2" gap in between the AR400 steel wedge and Lycan's internals, done intentionally to protect the electronics in case the wedge was penetrated.

However, its main advantage was its speed. Lycan was incredibly fast, clocking in at a theoretical 35mph thanks to its rear 12" Colsons wheels being powered by Etek motors. Lycan's sported four wheels at the rear for redundancy and traction, as well as keeping the robot relatively stable when attacking.

Lycan was built by a group of Canadian robot builders from Ontario, Canada, led by Ravi Baboolal under All Black Robotics. It did not do well in competition, losing its first and only rumble against Invader and Mohawk.

"I had a few moves and tactics in mind. I wanted Lycan to bring the illusion of REAL violence to the battlebox. Not just a spinning thing hitting another spinning thing. I wanted to grab onto another robot and do really violent things to it. Like full speed body slams, shaking it like a rabid dog or spin in place at 30mph and let go sending bots flying (kind of why we needed all that torque). So I wanted the grapper and rammer to work in concert."

All Black Robotics would not compete with Lycan after World Championship II, instead competing with Red Devil as its original builder Jerome Miles was competing abroad in King of Bots at the time of filming. Jerome retired from the sport soon after, and Ravi Baboolal took ownership of many of Red Devil's parts.

The original Red Devil was later sold to YouTube content creator William Osman, with All Black Robotics intending to enter an upgraded version of the machine into World Championship V, as they still owned the rights to the Red Devil name. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic however, the team were unable to make their return to the show.

Outside BattleBots

Ravi Baboolal confirmed that Lycan is still intact and stored in his shop. It was displayed alongside Robot Wars competitor Dantomkia in Ottawa, Canada since its BattleBots outing.

The team entered RoboGames 2023 with OverWolf, which was believed to be a repurposed Lycan.^Citation? However, the team had to withdraw close to the event dates.

World Championship II

Lycan vs. Mohawk vs. Invader Lycan was one of twelve robots which was forced to compete in three-way melees in order to determine the final four robots of the bracket. In its match, it was placed against Mohawk and Invader. Lycan drives into Invader. As Invader quickly got up to speed, Lycan dashed across the BattleBox but oversteered and found itself in the corner of the arena, where Mohawk gave chase. In escaping, Lycan drove into Invader and spun away on impact, suffering a gash to its front wedge. Invader ricochets around the BattleBox. This impact destabilized Invader, whose weapon was slowed after hitting Mohawk. However, the shell continued to make contact with the steel floor and Invader kept pinballing around the BattleBox, showing little control as Mohawk activated its flamethrowers. "Looks like Invader's able to spin properly now but it's not moving. That's not a good sign here." — Kenny Florian as Invader appears immobile Invader continues to spin, but shows no signs of life in its drive. Lycan then rammed into the side of Mohawk before turning its attention to Invader, who was residing in the red starting square. The Canadian bot attacked Invader again, but suffered a second gash to the side of its plow. Invader was nudged several more times and then stopped moving, though its shell continued to spin. Mohawk and Lycan continued to charge into Invader, which eventually cost Lycan a drive chain. The flaming crusher was able to push Lycan across the arena, eventually sinking its claw between its double-stacked drive wheels. Damage to Lycan after its encounter with Invader. With the Canadian robot unable to drive away due to aforementioned damage, a count began on both Lycan and Invader, with Mohawk declared the winner by double knockout. Lycan was not awarded a wildcard, meaning this was its first and only battle.

  • The name was decided by Blacksmith captain Al Kindle, according to Ravi Baboolal.
