Invertibility is the name given to robots which are capable of showing controlled movement even when flipped upside-down.
History and Design[]
An alternative to installing a self-righting mechanism, invertibility is a key design feature for robots of all weight classes and predates even the first BattleBots events in 1999. Robots are able to recover from being flipped over without teams having to dedicate space and weight from their design to installing a weapon or mechanism to right their robot. This makes invertibility a more efficient and reliable way of recovering from being flipped than self-righting mechanisms. However, these design features are not always mutually exclusive with robots such as T-Minus and early builds of HyperShock able to drive inverted as well as being able to self-right. Other robots, such as Bite Force, Copperhead and Minotaur are able to use the BattleBox arena and their weapon's gyroscopic forces to throw themselves into a more favorable position irrespective of being able to drive both ways up.
Invertibility can be achieved with wheeled robots by having the drive wheels be larger than the total height of the chassis, meaning parts of the wheel are exposed through both the top and bottom plates. Alternatively, in a less common design feature, two sets of wheels can instead be installed, as seen on heavyweight Triton and high school middleweight Tin Shredder.
