Ill Intent was a middleweight robot built by Morgan Dunbar and Ken Swenson. It was present at the 1999 Long Beach event, the only event it entered. Ill Intent had no success, losing both its battles by forfeit.
Ill Intent was designed as a two-wheel drive, wedge-shaped robot with "some sort of weapon on top driven by a linear actuator."[1] At one stage of construction, Ill Intent was planned to be at least partially autonomous. This would include having three overlapping vision sensors to have the robot charge at its opponent.[2] This feature was being planned with the anticipation that either Robot Wars 1998 or Robotica would include an autonomous class. It is unknown if this feature was kept for the final design.
Ill Intent was scheduled to fight Spaz. However, Ill Intent had technical issues and had to forfeit. After this, Ill Intent still had technical issues when the loser rounds started, so the robot was removed from the loser's bracket and was eliminated.
Morgan Dunbar had previously entered the Robot Wars 1997 event with the successful middleweight Hyena. Ken Swenson had entered the middleweight Satan's Revenge which lost to Hyena. The two teamed up to build Ill Intent after meeting and fighting each other at Robot Wars 1997. Ill Intent's name comes from Morgan Dunbar's teacher thinking Hyena was built for "ill intent."
