Hypothermia was a heavyweight robot built by veteran competitor Michael 'Fuzzy' Mauldin of Team Toad, which competed exclusively in BattleBots World Championship III.

It was a two-wheel drive robot armed with top-mounted grabbing arms and a lifting wedge. An evolution of early iterations of Team Toad's previous heavyweight Polar Vortex, after its 5th placed finish at RoboGames in 2015, Hypothermia added grabbers to the top to appease the active weapon requirement for modern BattleBots. Its front wedge was made from ⅜" thick AR400 steel, and its two drive motors were uniquely mounted to the back plate of the bot. The robot was light enough to allow for numerous offensive and defensive configurations for different opponents. Though it did not perform well in its only BattleBots season, Hypothermia lost to high-calibre opponents and proved to be durable throughout, surviving to three judges' decisions.

Despite showing intent to reapply with Hypothermia in the 2019 season, teasing potential spinner configurations and even prototying 'Hypothermia 2', Team Toad ultimately entered a brand new machine called Texas Twister for World Championship IV.[1]

"I'm hoping to bring back Hypothermia with even more weapon attachments, including the spinning weapon from Polar Vortex. I hope to bring the clamping arms and lifting legs on at least one configuration, but that would only be used against a less dangerous opponent."
— Fuzzy Mauldin announces his plans for a more modular Hypothermia in a 2018 Reddit AMA

Team Toad competed in the classic era of BattleBots with a variety of robots, almost all with the theme of extreme weather. However, bar a quarter-final finish with superheavyweight IceBerg, he would rarely find success with during his BattleBots run.

Fuzzy Mauldin also owns the Lazy Toad Ranch, a farm which briefly hosted the Robot Club & Grille restaurant. This was unique as it was also able to host live robot combat events. The restaurant operated between December 2002 and May 2003, and has been closed ever since.

Hypothermia's first match was against veteran Whiplash. Early on, Hypothermia managed to get underneath Whiplash and pushed it into the screws. However, its opponent retaliated by delivering a hard blow. After taking another assault from the Vasquez family's bot, Hypothermia lost one of its two drive wheels. Since Hypothermia now had no way to show transitional movement, it was counted out, allowing Whiplash to pick up the win by KO.

Hypothermia vs. Minotaur

In its next fight, Hypothermia found itself up against Minotaur. In response, Hypothermia doubled up on its wheels ahead of the fight and in order to remain within weight, removed one of its two grabbing arms. Team Toad also added a longer wedge in hope of getting underneath Minotaur and control the pace of the match. Minotaur attacked from the off, bending up the front wedge with its early hits. Hypothermia was flipped repeatedly by the Brazilian competitor's drum spinner, though there was little in the way of visible damage. However, this soon changed as Minotaur's next attack tore away one of Hypothermia's additional wheels. After another hit, Hypothermia lost part of its wedge but continued to fight. Hypothermia struggled to get any sort of control over Minotaur and was shoved around the arena before smoke started to pour. However, it went the distance and Minotaur was awarded the unanimous judges' decision, meaning Hypothermia fell to 0-2.

Sitting winless in the Fight Night rounds, Hypothermia entered the Desperado Tournament to compete for a guaranteed Top 16 slot. In order to earn it, they had to fight another spinner in Valkyrie. The fight was off to a good start for Hypothermia as it was initially absorbing hits from Valkyrie's undercutter disk. However, as the match went on, Hypothermia took a big hit from Valkyrie which shredded one tire and almost tore the other away. The fight began to level out as Valkyrie's weapon chain came away, reducing the match to a pushing match. Despite this, Hypothermia was unable to capitalize and the judges awarded a unanimous 3-0 decision to Valkyrie.

Hypothermia vs. The Four Horsemen

Hypothermia returned for the mid-season USA vs. The World tournament. Representing their country, Team Toad and Hypothermia were put up against The Four Horsemen. The match began with The Four Horsemen struggling to cause any noticeable damage to Hypothermia's bulky front wedge. Additionally, Hypothermia had a huge weight and power advantage on each smaller bot, and started to bully parts of The Four Horsemen around the arena, notably sending Famine into the screws and forcing it to emit smoke. Hypothermia stayed away from Famine for much of the remainder of the match and continued to be in control. Neither competitor was able to provide a knockout attack and as time ran out, the judges awarded 1 point and a unanimous 3-0 decision to the USA and Hypothermia. This proved to not only be Hypothermia's first BattleBots win, but its last fight.

Trivia[]

  • A similar lifting mechanism to Hypothermia was later seen in Defender, captained ironically by Jason Vasquez of Hypothermia's first opponent, Whiplash.
