- "Buchignani's deceptively simple looking robot, Hazard, is BattleBots' number one ranked middleweight."
- — BattleBots: The Official Guide
Hazard was a middleweight robot built by Tony Buchignani and Dan Danknick of Team Delta, which competed in all but one season of Comedy Central BattleBots. Following Danknick's forced departure from BattleBots, Buchignani entered the robot in later seasons as part of Team Hazard.
It's mostly NiCads, motors, aluminum, Lexan, Wet Noodle and spinning chromoly alloys. And because I have no TiG welder it is fastened with bolts."
Hazard maintained a consistent design throughout its appearances, being a four-wheel drive, box-shaped robot armed with a top-mounted horizontal steel blade. The blade of the original Season 1.0 incarnation had a 48" span, weighed 22lbs and was made out of 4340 chromoly steel. A bevel gear system, two 90V DC motors - overvolted to 120V - and a friction clutch drove the weapon. Hazard's construction incorporated extensive use of machined 7075 aluminum and Lexan for the chassis and armor; during construction, Team Delta opted to cover the base in sheet steel plates to provide defense against the Killsaws. Drive was provided by a set of DeWalt power drill motors, one for each wheel. Hazard's Season 1.0 internals were operated by a Vantec 36E speed controller and three NiCad battery towers, each with a capacity of 72 cells. Completing the robot was a front titanium 'ramp', which fed opponents into the blade itself.[1][2][3][4][5]
For its Season 3.0 redesign, Hazard received several changes to its internals and weaponry. While marginally shorter at 40" in length, the 1,500rpm blade was heavier at 24.5lbs and now made out of hardened S7 tool steel. The weapon system was driven by two 1hp AstroFlight Cobalt 90 motors, in conjunction with two 207D speed controllers from the same manufacturer. Four 18V DeWalt drill motors and gearboxes powered the wheels as before, in tandem with two Innovation First Victor 883 speed controllers and two 20-cell NiMH battery packs rated at 22V 60A. Hazard's Season 3.0 chassis was predominantly made out of 0.375" 7075-T6 aluminum, protected with ⅜" thick Lexan at the top and 0.09" 4130 chromoly steel sheet at the base.[6]
Though initially encountering issues with its primary weapon in battle, Hazard immediately proved to be a highly damaging and dominant competitor. In its Season 1.0 debut, it claimed outright victories in both the main Middleweight Championship and Middleweight Rumble. With Team Delta also eying to compete in the 2000 BotBash event, the Season 1.0 chassis was repurposed for the lightweight Evil Fish Tank, which finished the Season 2.0 division in the quarter-finals.[7][8][9]
Following its sabbatical from Season 2.0, Hazard continued its imperious streak through winning the Middleweight Championships of Seasons 3.0 and 4.0. These back-to-back titles allowed it to become the first BattleBots competitor to win three championship Giant Nuts in the Comedy Central era. Season 4.0 saw the blade's speed increased to over 2,000rpm, and development of a revised aluminum chassis with integrated bearings and 0.5" thick bars. The latter changes brought weight savings and allowed impact forces to be transferred directly into the chassis itself.[10]
A final set of changes for Season 5.0 introduced additional titanium side skirts, of the same 0.15" thickness as the redesigned front wedge plates.[11] Going into the season with a reputation as an 'undefeated' competitor, Hazard had its winning streak broken by T-Minus in the middleweight semi-finals. It ultimately retired with a 17-1 career record, making Hazard among the most successful robots in BattleBots history.
Hazard remained under the ownership of Tony Buchignani until April 2023, when it was purchased by BattleBots collector Lars Bakker.[12]
Outside BattleBots[]
Following the end of the Comedy Central run, Hazard also competed at Steel Conflict I in 2002. After defeating Mow-Blow in the first round by knockout in just 52 seconds[13], it lost its next match to Max Wedge and fell into the loser's bracket.[14] Hazard proceeded to win five more battles in a row, earning revenge over Max Wedge in the process,[15] before finally being eliminated by Auction Block.[16]
In 2023, Hazard was purchased by Dutch combat robot collector Lars Bakker, who brought it with him to the annual RoboNerd event in Wolverhampton, the United Kingdom, on September 2. This marked the robot's first public appearance outside the United States, displayed alongside competitors from Robot Wars, BattleBots, This is Fighting Robots and the UK live circuit.[17]

Season 1.0[] |
|---|
Hazard vs. Pegleg Hazard made its BattleBots debut in Season 1.0, where it faced the weaponless Pegleg in the first round. Hazard slashes Pegleg. Limited highlights of the battle were shown in Episode 13, in which Hazard approached, spun and ripped Pegleg's armor open from the front-right corner. With Pegleg having not moved far out of the blue square, Hazard emerged the winner by knockout. Bil Dwyer concisely described the match as being 'very short' and 'devastating'. |
Hazard vs. Turtle Road Kill Advancing to the quarter-finals, Hazard next took on Turtle Road Kill, a match-up broadcast in Episode 10. Hazard and Turtle Road Kill catch air from the Killsaws. Hazard, starting from the red square, spun its blade up while tentatively approaching Turtle Road Kill. It gave chase to Team Steyer's machine, which remained evasive for a few moments. At last, the two competitors collided head-on; Hazard reared up while flinging Turtle Road Kill into the air. In the process, its blade left a 3-inch gash in Turtle Road Kill's steel shell, but not without encountering problems spinning back up.[5] Hazard weathered a fast ram from Turtle Road Kill, quickly outwedging it while pushing Turtle Road Kill back towards the Killsaws.
|
Hazard vs. Spin Orbiting Force Hazard's semi-final match, broadcast in Episode 13, was against Spin Orbiting Force. The match was prefaced by a segment on Team Delta, where they revealed their motivations behind competing in robot combat events.
Footage of Hazard testing its blade outside the Netaphor Software facility was shown as part of the latter segment. Among the objects it destroyed included a 2x4 wooden plank, a shopping trolley weighing 30lbs, 4x4 wooden posts and a Commodore 64 computer monitor.[4] Hazard rips the motor off of Spin Orbiting Force. The fight itself started with Spin Orbiting Force attempting to box-rush Hazard from the right-hand side. Hazard, moving out of the blue square, was collected by the dustpan shape of the Robot Action League entrant. Despite attempts to spin the blade up, it was soon corralled into the Spikestrip near the entry/exit ramp. Spin Orbiting Force did not immediately follow Hazard across the BattleBox, allowing Hazard to build up momentum in its blade.
|
Hazard vs. Deadblow For the Middleweight Giant Nut, Hazard faced Grant Imahara and Deadblow. Both weapon motors were replaced ahead of this all-important title decider, one of three to be televised in Episode 14. Hazard hits Deadblow, sending it flying. From the blue square, Hazard started as tentatively as before. It moved left to confront Deadblow, advancing from the center. Hazard's blade took a blow from Deadblow's electric hammer, the impact sending Deadblow recoiling upwards. Hazard retreated, turned, and started approaching Deadblow again. It stopped short close to the Killsaws and spun in either direction, giving Deadblow a chance to hammer it a few more times. Hazard's blade stopped again as soon as it hit Deadblow, forcing it to retreat again and set up another duel.
Hazard initially held its distance from Deadblow, as Bil Dwyer theorized that it had 'knockout out' its opponent's power supply. It was next seen pushing Deadblow back into the red square while Grant Imahara's machine was fully counted out. After 53 seconds of combat, Hazard was declared the winner by knockout, taking the Season 1.0 Middleweight Championship, Giant Nut and $5,000 cash prize for Team Delta.
However, Hazard's victory was again not without problems. During its post-match interview, Donna D'Errico noticed an electrical smell coming from inside the robot, which Tony Buchignani confirmed to be from a 'smoked' component. Team Delta sought to investigate the problem once they brought Hazard back into The Pits. |
Middleweight Rumble Following its main championship triumph, Hazard was among the competitors returning for the Middleweight Battle Rumble, aired in Episode 15. Alongside all four of its previous opponents (Pegleg, Turtle Road Kill, Spin Orbiting Force and Deadblow), it fought alongside Alien Gladiator, Blade Runner, Ankle Biter, Pressure Drop, Bad Attitude and Subject to Change Without Reason. Hazard and Bad Attitude duel. Positioned inside the blue square, Hazard was slow to get involved at first. Remaining largely stationary throughout the opening moments, it turned to point its front ramp at Bad Attitude while getting the blade up to speed. Turtle Road Kill rushed in to ram Hazard from the left-hand side. Hazard was next seen with its blade powered down, before confronting and pushing Deadblow into the Spikestrips. Deadblow repeatedly hammered Hazard's armor in response, as Hazard shoved it around again while tanking a side-on attack from Ankle Biter.
While Deadblow proceeded to retreat to the blue square, Hazard backed into Bad Attitude and pushed Turtle Road Kill across the central Killsaw slots. Hazard continued to drive methodically across the center of the BattleBox, even as it was being swiped by Blade Runner and Subject to Change Without Reason. The former two competitors encountered Alien Gladiator, just as Ankle Biter almost flipped Subject to Change Without Reason over the Spikestrips. Hazard next rammed Bad Attitude, before settling in the background once again to spin its blade back up. Having attacked a charging Subject to Change Without Reason, it inadvertently left itself vulnerable to a high-speed charge from Bad Attitude while focusing on Randy Eubanks' machine. Bad Attitude launched Hazard into the air on contact, though Hazard landed upright against the former's front wedge shape.
Hazard backed up, but was outpaced and pushed across the corner by Bad Attitude. This exchange slowed Hazard's weapon once more as both competitors rammed each other head-on. Hazard kept circulating; a panning shot of builders controlling their machines captured it approaching Alien Gladiator, but seemingly without inflicting damage as Deadblow closed in. Hazard backed away towards a largely inactive Pressure Drop, before again striking Deadblow's front-right wheel and side plate. Deadblow remained mobile, however, as Hazard next tried to attack it from the back. This resulted in Hazard skittering into the Spikestrips alongside Grant Imahara's machine.

Season 3.0[] |
Hazard vs. Fusion
Following its short hiatus, a significantly redesigned and upgraded Hazard returned for Season 3.0, now with Tony Buchignani as team leader. Due to its Season 1.0 successes, it was granted the second seed in active rankings compiled by BattleBots prior to the event.[18] Hazard was thus able to bypass the preliminary rounds, beginning its second Middleweight Championship run in the Round of 32. There, it faced Team Saber's Fusion. Hazard hits the top of Fusion. Only brief highlights of this match, described by Tim Green as a 'ground war', were aired in Episode 11. Televised footage showed Hazard ramming, getting underneath and slicing the top of Fusion's front end. With its redesigned blade stopped, Hazard immediately turned to push Fusion into the Killsaws. Later on, it proceeded to inflict further damage which affected Fusion's ground clearance from the left-hand side. Hazard pinned Fusion against the Spikestrips, and was inferred by Tim Green to have delivered a 'knockout punch' to the yellow machine. |
Hazard vs. Zion Hazard's first fully televised fight of the season also aired in Episode 11, being its Round of 16 encounter against Zion.
Hazard and Zion collide. Hazard gave chase to the faster Team Guardian entrant, dodging a charge which saw the latter career onto the Ramrods. Backing into Zion's front wedge, it was lifted onto its side by a push from its opponent. Hazard's blade struck the BattleBox floor as it was being maneuvered, causing the whole robot to gyrate violently and smack Zion a second time. Hazard, landing upright, recovered to slash Zion's wedge and front-left corner, despite getting pushed around once more. Another series of head-to-head collisions followed; Hazard sent Zion airborne and continued ripping into its wedge with each successive exchange.
After some time, Hazard's blade began slowing down. Contact with a floor seam lead to it being blocked by one of the Pistons, and Zion driving over its left-most titanium wedge plate. Hazard turned to wedge underneath and follow a speeding Zion, ramming it in between sets of active Killsaws. For a few moments, it appeared that Hazard was struggling to spin its blade back up. After being forced to exchange shoves with Zion, it finally got the weapon rotating again as the match crossed the 1:30 mark. Circling around the Piston, Hazard slashed Zion's wedge once more. More difficulties with the blade were encountered, forcing Hazard to ram Zion into the Spikestrips.
|
Hazard vs. F5 Hazard progressed to the Middleweight Quarter-Finals, where it faced F5. Hazard slams into F5 after flipping it via floor Piston. During the match - briefly highlighted in Episodes 1 and 19 - it succeeded in flipping F5 onto its side via one of the Pistons. Once this was accomplished, Hazard spun F5 away with a direct blow to its spinning shell, and was declared the winner by knockout. |
Hazard vs. T-Wrex Through to the Middleweight Semi-Finals, Hazard next faced T-Wrex, a match broadcast in its entirety in Episode 19.
Hazard and T-Wrex collide. A tentative start by both competitors saw Hazard initially drive out of the blue square across the BattleBox center. Upon meeting T-Wrex, it smashed into the side of the Regan Designs thwackbot just as it began its own sit-and-spin attacks. Hazard kept clear, before exchanging slams with T-Wrex's arm. The collision sent Hazard recoiling backwards. After pausing for a few moments, Hazard resumed its tentative approach, while T-Wrex eventually moved back into the left perimeter.
With T-Wrex appearing hesitant to move on its left wheel, Hazard charged in, slamming T-Wrex into the Spikestrips. Hazard backed T-Wrex into the spikes themselves, momentarily generating sparks from its left wheelguard. Collisions with the bumper caused the blade to stop spinning. With T-Wrex stranded, Hazard retreated to the red square in preparation for another attack. Blade spinning, it sent yet more sparks flying upon hitting the right-hand side of T-Wrex. The collision freed T-Wrex, though Hazard wasted no time in pinning it against the spikes again.
Hazard drove back into the center, giving T-Wrex an opportunity to free itself on its own accord. More tentative stand-offs saw it keep its distance whenever T-Wrex spun its bladed arm around. As soon as T-Wrex stopped in the first stand-off, Hazard initially closed in, pushing and clipping its left wheelguard. Later on, it rammed T-Wrex hard enough to send Brent Regan's machine flying past the blue square. Another blow was delivered to T-Wrex's arm head. However, two follow-up collisions saw T-Wrex hook underneath Hazard's right wedge plate. The first impact flung Hazard upwards as the plate was hit by the spinning blade. The second flicked both plates upwards at the same time, causing the blade to slow down rapidly.

Hazard vs. Little Drummer Boy
Awaiting Hazard in the Middleweight Championship Final was newcomer Little Drummer Boy, aired as the last battle of Episode 19. Assessing both competitors ahead of a potentially 'awesome' fight, Bil Dwyer opined that Hazard's experience and driving would not match the power and consistency attained by Little Drummer Boy's 4,000rpm drum. Steve Buescher of Team Dangerous Drums looked forward to his chance of fighting Buchignani, while mentioning that Little Drummer Boy was using the same type of NiCad batteries that powered Hazard's Season 1.0 build. Buchignani remained confident that Hazard's blade would still deliver critical damage to Little Drummer Boy's framework.
Hazard pushed Little Drummer Boy under the pulverizer. Starting from the blue square once again, Hazard took an early hit to its wedge panels as it met Little Drummer Boy in the center. It allowed Little Drummer Boy to deliver a second blow to the tips of its blade, which was enough to disable the latter's drum completely. Hazard kept striking Little Drummer Boy's weapon, even as the recently-announced Middleweight Rookie of the Year kept ramming it in response.
Hazard hits Little Drummer Boy. Hazard slowed its blade down, enabling it to push and wedge Little Drummer Boy in two of the Ramrod slots. After the Ramrods flicked Little Drummer Boy into the air, Tony Buchignani's machine pushed it drum-first towards the left Killsaws and Screws. When it was unable to complete the shove, it instead placed Little Drummer Boy under the top-left Pulverizer, which dented Little Drummer Boy's top panel inwards. Hazard next delivered Little Drummer Boy into the inactive red square Screws, then backed up to restart its blade.
In its next two blows, Hazard targeted both Little Drummer Boy's left side panel and drum. A back-and-forth pushing match briefly developed, with Little Drummer Boy forcing Hazard against the red square Screws. Hazard kept pushing and outwedging its battered opponent, until it reversed across the center to get its blade spinning once again. Successive blows on Little Drummer Boy dislodged one of its weapon chains, bent its front-left wheel out of alignment, and ultimately immobilized it next to the Hellraisers.
Encouraged by Steve Buescher and his team, Hazard charged into Little Drummer Boy's side once more, destroying its left-rear wheel. It briefly returned to the blue square while parading across the arena, and Little Drummer Boy was counted out with just six seconds remaining.
A dominant knockout win gifted Hazard its second Middleweight Championship Giant Nut - the first time this feat would be achieved by a BattleBots competitor during the Comedy Central run. |
Middleweight Royal Rumble Hazard also participated in the Middleweight Royal Rumble. Alongside Zion, T-Wrex and Little Drummer Boy - all with varying degrees of repairs and functionality - it fought Alabama Slammer, Instigator, Bad Attitude, Blade Runner, Complete Control, Deadblow, Double Agent, Eraser, SABotage, Sunshine Lollibot, T-Minus, Twin Paradox and Village Idiot. Hazard and Bad Attitude rekindle their Rumble rivalry. Positioned in the red zone next to Eraser, Hazard was slow to attack the pink machine in the opening seconds. Shuttling back and forth across the left perimeter, it found itself dicing with Deadblow, before Blade Runner ramped over its wedge and inactive blade. Hazard clashed with Double Agent and Zion, but declined to spin its weapon up fully at this point in the five-minute match. It, again, was shown to be tentative against an aggressive-starting T-Minus, biding its time to get its blade rotating while idling opposite the top-right Killsaws. Hazard slashed into Zion while being pushed sideways by Jered Singleton's machine, but otherwise remained in the background until T-Minus approached it. |
Season 4.0[] |
Hazard vs. Timmy Hazard, now in its third iteration, returned to defend its Middleweight Championship crown in Season 4.0. Bypassing the preliminary rounds once again, its first match was against Timmy in the Round of 32, broadcast in Episode 5.
Hazard rips the front panel off of Timmy. From the red square, Hazard spun up its blade and delivered two successive blows to Timmy's front wedge. The impacts left gashes on either side, but slowed the weapon down considerably by the time Hazard whacked Timmy's back panel. Hazard continued pressuring Timmy across the top-left corner, delivering it into the top-most Spikestrip. Both robots separated, giving Tony Buchignani's machine the chance to spin its blade again. In the next head-to-head exchange, Hazard ripped Timmy's wedge panel clean off.
Hazard followed and spun Timmy around with its next blow, following the latter's retreat to the top-left Screws. More collisions allowed it to dismantle the front-right wedge support and tear the back panel off Timmy's chassis. The latter impact immobilized Timmy completely. After a few seconds, Hazard rushed into Timmy one last time, spinning it away into the nearby Pulverizer. A victory spin followed as Timmy was counted out, giving Hazard the win by knockout after one minute and 23 seconds.
|
Hazard vs. SABotage Hazard progressed to the Round of 16, facing former Rumble opponent SABotage in the opening match from Episode 15.
Hazard destroys SABotage's back panel. Starting in the red square once more, it speedily chased and collided with SABotage by the inner-left Killsaws. While Matt Sabatino's machine was attacked by the rising hazards, Hazard drove away, lining up a front attack which tore SABotage's lifter/grabber askew and jammed its right wheel. Bars supporting SABotage's weapon flew off as Hazard next struck the former's other wheel, pitching SABotage into a second spin. Follow-up blows resulted in SABotage's left wheel and tire getting lacerated; and its weapon and wedge structures being mangled even further. Another hit to the right-hand wedge was enough for Hazard to immobilize SABotage completely.
Hazard circled around its heavily-damaged opponent. Not content with its knockout blow, it attacked SABotage three more times, hitting and breaking off its back panel in the process.
This sequence left SABotage on the Killsaws, and at the mercy of further rams from Hazard until it was counted out. Hazard celebrated another knockout win with a spin in the BattleBox center, in a match lasting one minute and seven seconds.
|
Hazard vs. El Diablo Hazard once again forged its way into the Quarter-Finals, battling Season 2.0 runner-up El Diablo in Episode 17. Hazard tears off El Diablo's drum. In the opening seconds, it initially circled out of the red square around the lower-left Killsaws, trying to ward off an approaching El Diablo. As Hazard turned, its blade made contact with the drum of Zach Bieber's tracked machine, deflecting it away. Hazard followed up with a second blow to El Diablo's drum, which had been disabled by the first attack. Retreating into the center, it partially immobilized El Diablo by hitting its right track, which Hazard attacked again seconds later. Shards of Lexan from El Diablo's side cover flew across the center of the BattleBox on impact.
Hazard kept attacking, breaking El Diablo's drum off its mount. Following a triumphant spin, it waited in the center for El Diablo to be counted out, cementing another knockout victory after just 45 seconds.
|
Hazard vs. Heavy Metal Noise Through to the Middleweight Semi-Finals once again, Hazard faced another vertical spinner in the shape of Heavy Metal Noise. The match, with a place in the overall Final at stake, served as the cold opening to Episode 19. When interviewed by Bil Dwyer moments before the start, Tony Buchignani stated his aim to remove the newcomer's spinning disk.
Hazard rips off one of Heavy Metal Noise's wheels. Hazard drove out of the red square and slammed into Heavy Metal Noise within the first four seconds. The collision sent both robots recoiling; Heavy Metal Noise was spun 180 degrees and immobilized instantly. Not content with this, Hazard battered Heavy Metal Noise before ripping off its right wheel and back panel; the wheel bouncing into and off the Lexan wall in front of the countdown clock. Hazard completed this 37-second knockout with another victory spin and parade across the BattleBox center.
|
Hazard vs. Complete Control In the Middleweight Championship Final, also aired in Episode 19, Hazard faced off against fellow veteran Derek Young and his latest iteration of Complete Control. Highlights of its main BattleBots campaigns up to that point were shown before the match, summarized by Carmen Electra. To deflect attacks from and slow down Hazard's blade, Young welded a titanium skirt onto the back of Complete Control, which he would initially drive in reverse.
Hazard destroys Complete Control. Hazard, again starting from the red square, began attacking Complete Control's left-rear corner once both competitors met in the center. In doing so, it survived Complete Control's initial effort to push it into the left Killsaws. Hazard drove towards, but was momentarily stopped and flicked upwards upon catching the nearby Spinner. Backing into the center, it sent sparks flying as Complete Control reversed into the blade. Hazard outwedged and pushed Complete Control into the lower-left ramp bumper, while still churning away at its titanium skirt. Complete Control pushed it back to the other side of the BattleBox, at which point Hazard's blade caught and flung the whole skirt panel away.
With Complete Control now forced to battle weapon-first, Hazard next decimated the front-left Lexan panel of the British Columbian machine. While pressured by Complete Control, desperate to gain purchase with its forks and grappling arm, Hazard bent the arm leftwards during its next series of blows. Complete Control smoked and stopped moving while chasing Hazard across the BattleBox, leaving Hazard the only robot standing.
Having already secured its third championship Giant Nut, Hazard tore further into Complete Control's armor, chassis and pneumatics with another series of attacks. These also removed both of its opponent's side panels, and twisted its chassis to the extent that Complete Control's front-left and right-rear wheels now pointed inwards. After one minute and 16 seconds, Complete Control was counted out, and Hazard was officially declared the Season 4.0 Middleweight Champion. In his own assessment of the brutal match, Derek Young considered it to be 'one of the greatest BattleBots fights of all time' at that point in the Comedy Central show's run.[19]

Season 5.0[] |
Hazard vs. Misty the WonderBot
Looking to earn a fourth Giant Nut in as many attempts, Hazard returned to Season 5.0 with its newly-developed side skirts. Once again, its prior championship results allowed it to bypass the preliminary rounds. Hazard thus started its title defense in the Round of 32, facing Misty the WonderBot in Episode 4. Misty the WonderBot and Hazard collide. Hazard remained in the red square during the first few seconds. When Misty the WonderBot closed in, sparks flew as the two competitors brought their horizontal spinners against each other. The collision spun Hazard towards the Spikestrips near the center-left Screws. Reversing across the Killsaws, it dealt three rapid blows to Misty the WonderBot's spinning bar and left wheel, tearing off one of the latter's weapon teeth in the process.
Hazard tears a wheel off of Misty the WonderBot. Another weapon-on-weapon collision followed in the center. With Misty the WonderBot's spinner losing inertia, Hazard drove into and under the former, its blade launching Misty the WonderBot upwards. Hazard followed up with another strike to Misty the WonderBot's left side, damaging an axle and leaving Misty the WonderBot hobbling across the BattleBox floor. This lead to another collision between both spinners, incapacitating Misty the WonderBot's weapon and left drive. Having caused its left wheel to buckle further, Hazard tore Misty the WonderBot's right wheel off with another forceful slam. More side-on attacks followed as Misty the WonderBot unsuccessfully tried to shuffle with its bar spinner. These resulted in Hazard removing its opponent's remaining wheel and sending it into the left Spikestrips, just as Misty the Wonderbot began smoking.
Hazard slammed its bar into Misty the WonderBot one last time, before gingerly pushing it under the top-left Pulverizer while Misty the WonderBot was being counted out.
|
Hazard vs. Blade Runner Hazard's next televised appearance was in Episode 9, where it fought a newly-redesigned Blade Runner in the Round of 16. Prior to the match, Tony Buchignani learnt of Blade Runner's newly-created wedge attachment, designed specifically to wedge underneath and potentially destabilize his robot.
In the opening moments, both robots exhibited a tentative approach towards each other. Hazard waited in the red square for the first three seconds, before confronting Blade Runner and shuffling around in the center to find the right angle of attack. Ultimately, it backed onto Blade Runner's wedge, ironically enabling Blade Runner to hook under and push it in circles by the right-hand skirt. Hazard slipped off and hit Blade Runner's right wheel, buckling the hub, milliseconds before its bar caught the top of its opponent's extra attachment.
Hazard rips off one of Blade Runner's wheels. Though suggested to be on the back foot at this point in the televised broadcast, Hazard had succeeded in immobilizing Blade Runner on one side. Moving clear to get its bar back up to speed, it turned around to slam into the back of a revolving Blade Runner. Cautious at first towards Blade Runner's sit-and-spin maneuvers, it weathered a slam from Ilya Polyakov's machine, while proceeding to hit, deflect and rip off its left tire. The last of these blows immobilized Blade Runner completely.
Hazard proceeds to 'totally eviscerate' Blade Runner. To Polyakov's anguish, Hazard kept shredding Blade Runner's exposed rim and shell, before flinging its remaining wheel into the Lexan. Hazard once again emerged the resounding winner by knockout after one minute and nine seconds.
|
Hazard vs. Zion Hazard advanced to the Quarter-Finals, where it fought a rematch against a significantly redesigned Zion. The match was the last of the Middleweight bouts to be aired in Episode 15, prefaced by a 'BattleBots All Stars' segment on Tony Buchignani. There, Buchignani stated that 'luck' had played a large part in Hazard's run of success up to this point, noting that any robot could have the potential to beat it. He also opened up on his nervous disposition entering tournaments and individual matches, and singled out T-Minus - itself having won a Semi-Final place in the same episode - as his most feared opponent.
One of many impacts between Hazard and Zion. As ever, Hazard tentatively drove out of the red square across the center. Encountering Zion, it clipped its opponent's front plates, as Zion deflected and began pushing it towards the lower-left Pulverizer. Hazard slipped off as Zion turned, pivoting around through the gyroscopic forces of its bar spinner. With Zion facing the Spikestrips, it approached and attacked the right skirt of Jered Singleton's machine, but not without reversing up it by mistake. More impacts slowed Hazard's blade down as it next tried to sustain this onslaught on Zion's back and left armor.
Hazard changed tactics, opting to push Zion against the Spikestrips and Killsaws near the red square. Allowing Zion to escape, it shuffled back and forth while the blade spun back up. Hazard maneuvered back into the center, luring and tearing Zion's left wedge askew in its next series of blows. It struck the back of Zion seconds later, with Zion appearing to struggle with mobility issues as it desperately raised one of its lifting arms. A front-on attack allowed Hazard to generate more sparks and remove the tip of Zion's left lifter, along with the dangling wedge panel and one of its support brackets. Another blow to Zion's back sent it spinning into the Spikestrips, ironically allowing Zion to regain normal drive and career front-first into Hazard's blade once again.
The damage inflicted to Zion by Hazard by the fight's conclusion. Hazard continued to damage Zion's weaponry and chassis in this manner, delivering successive blows to its front bulkhead, lifter tips and skirts. These lead to the front-right wedge being torn outwards, both lifters being jammed open, and Zion as a whole seemingly becoming immobilized. Hazard initiated another series of attacks to Zion's arms and skirts, though Zion valiantly started turning in reverse circles once more. At last, the front-right wedge was violently removed, and Zion sent into more prolonged bouts of immobility. Hazard finished the match with a 'ricochet shot' to Zion's back panel. After unsuccessfully trying to push Zion sideways, it backed out, turned, and drew behind Zion, spinning its blade a final time before the end buzzer sounded.
With Zion not being fully counted out, the match went to a judges' decision, which Hazard received 43-2. |
Hazard vs. T-Minus
One step closer to earning a possible fourth Giant Nut, Hazard met T-Minus in the Middleweight Semi-Finals. Despite Tony Buchignani's apprehension about facing the revised Inertia Labs flipper - modified specially to counter Hazard - its 'undefeated' reputation continued to be emphasized in build-ups for the match, televised in Episode 16. T-Minus jams Hazard's bar. Another tentative start saw Hazard leave the red square to confront T-Minus in the BattleBox center. It bumped, grazed and pushed T-Minus back, reversing just in time to dodge the latter's first flip. Hazard immediately rammed and began churning away at T-Minus's left titanium wheelguard and flipper lip, with similar results. Another tentative push was initiated by Hazard. However, this gave T-Minus the chance to slip its flipper under Hazard's left wedge, and flick it directly into the blade.
Sparks flew as Hazard was launched into a short aerial spin. Though landing upright, its blade had become jammed by the wedge piece lifted by T-Minus. Hazard, with its spinner incapacitated, desperately tried to push T-Minus again with its flat back. Further shuffling, however, left it even more vulnerable to T-Minus, which proceeded to get underneath and flip it onto its back.
Hazard, with no form of self-righting, lay helplessly as T-Minus parked alongside and Inertia Labs punched the Lexan in jubilation. Tony Buchignani's machine was counted out after 55 seconds, bringing its Season 5.0 campaign and career-long winning streak to an abrupt end. Recollecting the circumstances leading to Hazard's downfall, Buchignani told Arj Barker afterwards that he was relieved to have proven that his robot was not 'undefeatable'.
Excluding the Season 3.0 Royal Rumble - its only other encounter with T-Minus - this match proved to be Hazard's only defeat throughout its entire BattleBots career. |

Mark Beiro Introductions[]
"He's a helicopter from hell who will make your brain swell. Lock up the young ones, it's HAZARD!"
"He is warm, tender, cuddly little ball of evil violence and hate. Give it up for HAZARD!"
"Ready to use his hardened steel blade of death to carve his opponents like metal turkeys. Here is HAZARD!"
"He's looking to be the first BattleBots champion ever to reclaim his title. His ultimate goal is to raise the robot death toll. Here is HAZARD!"
"The two-time champion is stronger than nukes. Losing is inevitable so put up your dukes. Here is HAZARD!"
"4 out of 5 dentists agree this two time champion is bad for your teeth and your head and your whole damn metal body. Here is HAZARD!"
"This former champion came out of retirement to reclaim his middleweight crown. That's not adrenaline coursing through his veins, its jet black liquid hate. Go! Save yourself. Its HAZARD!"
"Here is two-time BattleBots world middleweight champion, HAZARD!"
"Your vision is blurred. Your speech is slurred. You look like a nerd after a beating from HAZARD!"
"This bot is so good, so efficient and he wins so often that frankly, its getting a little annoying, but you gotta hand it to the defending middleweight champion, HAZARD!"

Trivia[]
- Though Hazard was one of the most successful robots from the Comedy Central era, its only merchandise appearances occurred in video games.
- According to the Team Hazard website, the Season 3.0-5.0 iterations of Hazard cost approximately $5,000 to build.[6][10][11]
- The wheels of the Season 1.0 Hazard - supplied and modified from a design by Colson Caster - were repurposed from Team Delta's original US Robot Wars competitor Agamemnon.[1]
- Of the robots to fight Hazard more than once, Zion was the only one to battle it twice in the main Middleweight Championships.
