Hammer Saws, also spelt Hammersaws, are an evolution of overhead weaponry which consist of a vertical spinner mounted to an articulating arm. As the arm swings over, the spinning weapon makes contact with the opponent and can either slice or carve a hole into the top-facing armor.

Hammer saws came about as a way to exploit the top armor on opponents, which was historically thinner than anywhere else. This concept was first seen on the middleweight S.O.B., which featured a cutting saw mounted to an articulating arm in combination with a dustpan-shaped front scoop. S.O.B. competed in Season 4.0 and Season 5.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots, making the championship final in the latter.

Although few robots adopted the idea due to the show's cancelation after Season 5.0, two notable robots picked up the concept and brought it to the heavyweight division - Skorpios and SawBlaze. Both robots initially featured cutting saws, but later evolved to include a multitude of asymmetric discs too, which both robots typically prioritize for greater damage output.
The name "hammer saw" was coined as this transition occurred, combining the damage potential of spinning weaponry with the control of an overhead hammer. Ahead of World Championship VI, veteran BattleBots competitor Al Kindle rebuilt his flaming hammer robot Blacksmith, incorporating a flaming hammer saw which he dubbed a 'power hammer'. Kraken also saw a dramatic redesign for World Championship VII, ditching its airbag-powered crusher for a 'kinetic crusher', consisting of a bidirectional spinning disc on an arm which can attack in a similar vein to hammer saws.
In World Championship VII, SawBlaze became the first robot sporting a hammer saw to win the Giant Nut, also finishing runner-up during BattleBots: Champions II.
