Gyro Walkers are a unique variation of walkerbots within BattleBots which utilise the gyroscopic forces of a spinning mass to tilt from side to side and move across the BattleBox.

Due to being relatively less complex than 'true walkers' with articulating legs, gyro walkers have never been eligible for a weight bonus. The most notable example of a gyro walker in BattleBots was Wrecks, which competed in the first two World Championships on ABC.

With changes to the design rules stating that your weapon system and drive system must be entirely separate, gyro walkers have been outlawed.[1] However, BattleBots Proving Ground entry Apex uses a similar concept, relying on the robot's three legs to tilt its weapon in whichever direction it wishes to drive in. As per BattleBots design rules, the wheels on Apex are powered.

Outside BattleBots[]

Gyro walker designs are still relatively uncommon outside of BattleBots, though a notable example on the US live circuit is 3lb beetleweight Droopy. The NHRL fan favorite uses two horizontal spinning discs to lift either side of the robot up to take 'steps' in a specific direction. It has no separate drive train, instead moving by changing the speeds of its weapon motors slightly.

Droopy placed first in the December 6, 2020 NHRL event with a 6-1 overall record. In May 2023, Droopy notably went unbeaten in the beetleweight division to secure an event win and qualify for the 2023 finals.

Copperhead captain Luke Quintal also competes with several gyrowalker designs. His fairyweight Dumpster Baby and beetleweight Rickety Cricket use similar physics to Wrecks. He also has a gyrowalker called Kitten Mittens in the 12lb division which, due to event rulings, gets a 50% weight bonus and therefore weighs 18lbs.
