It was a large robot even for its weight class, armed with a large spring-loaded spiked hammer and painted to resemble a dragon. It was built by Daniel Rupert and his high school class. It was a revised version of his previous heavyweight, Malicious Mischief. Grendel performed decently, reaching the quarter-finals in its first and only season. After Season 1.0, Grendel was turned into Revision Z.
Grendel was named after a mythical monster that was slain by Beowulf. It was originally named HammerHead, but Rupert changed the name after seeing the lightweightHammerHead already had used the name.[2]
Grendel brings its hammer into Diesector's chassis.
Grendel's first match was against Diesector. At the start of the match, Diesector had the advantage, zooming around Grendel, outmaneuvering and out speeding its spring-loaded hammer. However, Diesector drove into the spikestrip and stopped moving as one of its driver controllers had failed due to the battery having insufficient current. One of Diesector's hammers kept flailing away, but there was no movement from the wheels. Grendel finally managed to get a direct blow on Diesector with its hammer, piercing the shell. Another strike from the hammer did not cause as much damage, but Diesector had long since been immobilized and was counted out. Grendel won by KO at 1:36 and this win put Grendel into the quarter-finals.
Grendel vs. Minion
Grendel tries to strike Minion, but misses.
Grendel being pushed by Minion.
Grendel now faced the reigning superheavyweight champion, Minion. The two slowly approached each other at first, with Minion veering off to the left, before skillfully driving around Grendel, avoiding its axe and getting underneath it with its wedge. Minion used its far superior speed to slam into Grendel. Grendel managed a glancing blow on Minion, allowing Minion to drag it around. After eventually escaping the axe, Minion continued to ram Grendel, avoiding axe blows all the time. Minion won on a 7-2 judges' decision and Grendel was eliminated from the tournament.
Superheavyweight Royal Rumble
Grendel enters the fray.
Grendel returned to participate in the Superheavyweight Royal Rumble at the end of the tournament. It first struck Odin and then Abbatoir. Grendel began tormenting Prompt Critical before turning its attention to Rhino. Later in the rumble, it tried to attack Diesector, but Minion interfered. Grendel did not feature too heavily in the remainder of the fight as Ronin bumped into it. It then went after Rhino but stopped moving in the blue square and played no further part. As time was called, a weaponless Minion was officially declared the winner.
