Green Wave, later known as Green Wave Squared and Slasher, was a middleweight robot built by Team Demolition which first competed in Season 5.0 of Comedy Central BattleBots, as well as the first two BattleBots IQ events in 2002 and 2003.
Similar in concept to Team Delta's middleweight champion Hazard, it was a low box-shaped robot with four-wheel drive, transparent armor and a powerful overhead spinning blade. Green Wave performed well through its first two competitions, winning one fight before losing to Phoenix in the main Season 5.0, and reaching the Round of 32 at the first BattleBots IQ tournament before losing to eventual fourth-place finisher Evil Eagle.[2] An image of its BattleBots IQ fight with HammerRoyd was featured on the cover of issue #3 of the official BattleBots Magazine. Team Demolition also won the award at BattleBots IQ for the Hardest Working Team.
Under the name Green Wave Squared, Team Demolition returned and won the Best Engineered Robot Award during BattleBots IQ 2003.
Green Wave also entered the 2004 NPC Charity Open, but encountered unknown issues and did not compete. The following year, it was redesigned for the R3: Rochester Robot Rampage with a new shape closely resembling that of Hazard, where it went undefeated and won the Middleweight championship. It was unable to repeat this success in the private Cisco Party held a year later.
In 2007, an upgraded Green Wave, now named Slasher, was one of the eight robots competing at a second private event staged at the annual Sun Microsystems JavaOne conference. There, it continued its previous form by reaching the semi-finals, only to lose to eventual champion SubZero.
Green Wave's builder, Paul Ventimiglia, previously competed in Season 3.0 with the lightweight Tantrum, and would go on to build the championship-winning heavyweights Brutality and Bite Force.
Robot History[]
BattleBots IQ 2002[] |
---|
Green Wave vs. Checkmate Green Wave's first fight of BattleBots IQ 2002 was against Checkmate. This fight didn't last long, as both robots spun up to full speed and spent some time maneuvering around each other, looking for an attack. The weapons tapped each other, neither robot was affected by this as both of their weapons were still spinning. Both robots collided again, and Green Wave's blade was sent flying as Checkmate was sent across the arena. Both robots were immobile after that hit, and the judges ultimately went for Green Wave as it was mobile for a few mere seconds longer than Checkmate was after the large hit.[3] |
Green Wave vs. HammerRoyd Next up in the winner's bracket for Green Wave was HammerRoyd, who it defeated to move on in the bracket. |
Green Wave vs. Whambulance Green Wave then fought Whambulance. This fight started with Green Wave trying to spin up, and Whambulance preventing it from doing so. Eventually, Whambulance was able to knockout Green Wave's drive chain, disabling one of its wheels. Green Wave could only move in circles now. However, its weapon was still working. Whambulance went in for another hit, and Green Wave's weapon went flying. Green Wave was now weaponless, but Whambulance stopped moving after that hit as a vital component was knocked loose. Whambulance was counted out, and Green Wave moved on. |
Green Wave vs. Karl Green Wave then fought a robot called Karl, where it lost for the first time and fell into the loser's bracket as a result. |
Green Wave vs. Evil Eagle Green Wave was now up against Evil Eagle in the Round of 32. Green Wave lost this fight as well, eliminating it from the competition. At the end of the competition, Paul Ventimiglia won the Hardest Working Team Award, presented by Greg Munson and Trey Roski. |
Season 5.0[] |
Green Wave vs. Iron Soldier Green Wave's first match in the Season 5.0 preliminary rounds was against Iron Soldier. It won this fight, and advanced to the next round. |
Green Wave vs. Phoenix Next up for Green Wave in the preliminary rounds was Phoenix. Green Wave lost this fight, and was eliminated from the competition.[4] |
BattleBots IQ 2003[] |
Green Wave Squared vs. ? Adopting the name Green Wave Squared, Team Demolition returned to BattleBots IQ in 2003.

R3: Rochester Robot Rampage[] |
Green Wave vs. Paminator Green Wave's first opponent at the Rochester R3 event was Paminator. This fight started with Green Wave getting up to speed and immediately hitting Paminator, knocking it away. Paminator then rammed Green Wave. However, this cost it as Green Wave's spinning blade messed up Paminator's wedge leaving only two of its four wheels on the ground. Green Wave then delivered a nasty hit which knocked loose the right rear corner of Paminator's top armor. Following this, Paminator charged at Green wave with its messed up wedge again, this fixed it. However, Green Wave sliced into Paminator again, ripping the aerial of the machine and immobilizing it. Paminator tapped out, and Green Wave won by knockout. |
Green Wave vs. Skip or Die This put Green Wave in the next round, where it faced up against Skip or Die. This fight started with both robots spinning up, and Skip or Die got in a large hit in on Green Wave that sent it into a Mauler Dance, where it landed on its wheels under the pulverizer. This hit disabled its spinning bar. However, Skip or Die was worse off from this hit, as it was completely immobilized. Skip or Die then tapped out, giving Green Wave another win by KO. |
Green Wave vs. Chopper Green Wave's next fight was against Chopper. This fight started with both robots spinning up and moving towards each other, with Green Wave ripping armor off the top of Chopper. Green Wave then delivered a hit that completely immobilized its opponent. Chopper promptly tapped out. |
Green Wave vs. SubZero (Forfeit) This put Green Wave through to the next round again, where it was scheduled to fight against SubZero. However, SubZero had technical issues, and was forced to forfeit the match, putting Green Wave in the semi-finals. |
Green Wave vs. Falcon In the semi-finals, Green Wave faced Falcon. Both bots spun up their weapons and sized each other up. Falcon popped Green Wave in the air with its drum. Green Wave landed upright and approached Falcon. Falcon's drum hit Green Wave's hinged wedges, causing Green Wave to roll up onto Falcon, where the weapons collided. Green Wave was sent flying from that hit, causing it to perform another Mauler Dance. Somehow, Green Wave managed to stay right-side up from that hit. Falcon, however, was flipped from this hit and its drum started banging on the arena floor. Falcon approached Green Wave again, and Green Wave landed a nasty hit, sending Falcon spinning into the wall. Falcon's drum was no longer spinning, and Green Wave delivered one more hit which sent pieces of Falcon flying. Falcon tapped out, and Green Wave was the winner. |
Green Wave vs. Falcon Green Wave was up against Falcon again in the finals after Falcon won against SubZero in the loser's bracket half of the semis. Unfortunately for Falcon, it had to remove its drum spinner for this fight due to the damage it took from Green Wave. Falcon added a big wedge on the front, and removed all the wedge-skirts on the sides and back. Green Wave spun up its weapon, and Falcon was having drive issues right out of the gate as one side of the drive wasn't working. Green Wave gave Falcon's wedge a few taps, and drove Falcon toward the wall. Green Wave's weapon stopped spinning, and it started to push Falcon around the arena. After some pushing and shoving, Green Wave's weapon spun up again and delivered a couple shots to Falcon's wedge before delivering a big hit which knocked Falcon's wedge loose on one side. Falcon stopped moving, and it tapped out. Green Wave was now the BattleBots Rochester R3 middleweight champion. |
Cisco Party 2006[] |
Green Wave vs. Breaker Box Green Wave next competed in the private Cisco Party event held in 2006, where it took on Breaker Box in Round 1, built by Jim Smentowski. Bizarrely, unlike a fellow horizontal spinner Icewave, Green Wave did not begin the fight with its weapon up to speed.Breaker Box immediately breached the front wedge of Green Wave and rammed it back against the arena wall, deflecting Paul Ventimiglia's robot into the corner and underneath the pulverizer. Green Wave was struck by the hammer several times as Breaker Box scooped underneath again, with smoke now rising from the horizontal spinner. During the assault from the BattleBox hazard, Green Wave lost its right-rear wheel and struggled for mobility as a result. Green Wave spun back up, but found itself driven back underneath the pulverizer again. While Breaker Box tanked the glancing shots from its blade, Green Wave was rammed toward the opposite half of the arena, smoking again as Breaker Box used the pointed tip of its scoop as an axe to assert its dominance. With thirty seconds remaining, Jim Smentowski's robot returned Green Wave to the pulverizer before the Rochester R3 champion began emitting smoke. Having had its way for much of the fight, a count then began on Green Wave, eliminating it after its first and only fight. |
BattleBots JavaOne 2007[] |
Slasher vs. Stewie Returning for the BattleBots JavaOne event, Green Wave had been redesigned, and was renamed Slasher. Slasher's first fight was against Stewie. This fight started with bots spinning up their weapons and Stewie leading with its big wedge on the back to absorb the punishment from Slasher's blade. Both bots maneuvered around each other, and then Slasher landed a nice hit on Stewie's wedge. Stewie then charged at Slasher, and the weapons collided, which sent Slasher flying into the arena wall. However, this impact knocked something loose inside Stewie, and it stopped moving. Stewie was counted out, and Slasher was the winner. |
