GRABOT was a heavyweight robot built by Team DaStroy which competed in BattleBots World Championship V and the spin-off series, BattleBots: Bounty Hunters.

It was a two-wheel drive, blue and white robot armed with articulating hands, and a 45lb wedge at the rear made from AR500 steel for deflecting spinners, and spikes on each wheel, each made from 1½" thick UMHW. While invertible, the robot could use its grabbing arms with spring-loaded 'fingers' as they worked in both directions and worked from a single mechanism. GRABOT also featured twin maces, which were interchangeable with a pair of cutting saws, as seen in a testing video.[1]

GRABOT performed poorly in its debut season, with its primary weapon proving ineffective throughout. It lost both of its matches by knockout during the Fight Night rounds, first to SubZero and then to Beta.

Returning for BattleBots: Bounty Hunters, GRABOT entered Son of Whyachi bracket but failed to pick up a win as it was comfortably beaten by Robotic Death Company and their shell spinner, Gigabyte.

The bot was designed to be a demonstration for the team's company, which specialises in customising existing disability vehicles such as wheelchairs to allow people to pick up and grab items as anybody else would.[2][3] GRABOT did not return for future seasons of BattleBots.

World Championship V[]

GRABOT vs. SubZero

GRABOT's first match of the 2020 season came against SubZero.

Grabot subzero

GRABOT is tossed through the air in the opening seconds by SubZero.

GRABOT struggled to even get going as they were flipped almost immediately. Due to their weapon's orientation, this meant they could neither right themselves nor drive upside down. GRABOT continued to get flipped but was not righted until a few more flips from their opponent.

By this point, it was too late as GRABOT could no longer move and was counted out, giving SubZero its first win of the 2020 season by KO.

GRABOT vs. Beta

GRABOT was then given a match against veteran John Reid and Beta, who had made quick work of Rusty in their previous battle.

GRABOT watches on as Beta fires its hammer.

Ben Davidson's robot was able to avoid a box rush but had drive issues and instead took a slam into the arena barrier. GRABOT was then pushed into the corner where it took a shot from the pulverizer and a glancing blow from Beta's hammer. GRABOT continued to fight but was pushed into the corner and this time could only drive in circles. With no offensive weaponry and even less driving ability than before, GRABOT took multiple shots from Beta's hammer and began smoking before being counted out, giving Beta the win by KO.

Due to damage sustained in the Beta fight, GRABOT was unable to be repaired in time for a third match. Thus, Team DaStroy finished the season with a 0-2 record.

BattleBots: Bounty Hunters[]

GRABOT vs. Gigabyte

In addition to the main competition, GRABOT also took part in the Son of Whyachi Bounty Hunters bracket. Its first opponent was veteran shell spinner Gigabyte.

GRABOT suffered from drive issues for the majority of the fight and allowed Gigabyte to take full advantage from the off, ripping GRABOT's wedge away and sending it flying across the box.

After this attack, GRABOT could no longer move and was counted out, putting a quick end to GRABOT's Bounty Hunters run.

Trivia[]

  • According to multiple teams present at filming for the 2020 season, Beta was originally set to fight Sharko until they were unable to repair their robot in time. GRABOT and Rampage were both drafted in for an additional fight but GRABOT were ready first and fought Beta instead.
