Eugene was a heavyweight robot built by Team Moon which competed in the BattleBots Pro Championship in 2009.
One of the team's two entries for the competition alongside Emily, it was an invertible, two-wheel drive robot with a red and dark gray paint scheme, and a box-shaped chassis. Eugene's main weapon was a front-mounted spinning drum powered by a twin-chain system.
In its only known appearance at a BattleBots event, Eugene performed strongly, winning its first match against Root Canal from veteran builder Donald Hutson. Despite being relegated to the Loser's bracket by VD6.0, it would pick up two more victories before being eliminated by Megabyte.[2][3]
The 2009 Eugene owes design similarities with Team Moon's preceding heavyweight drum spinner, Gerald, with both machines featuring a similar weapon, chassis shape, wheel placement and rollover bars on either side of the drum. Gerald competed at the 2008 RoboGames and ComBots Texas Cup in both the 220lb[4] and 340lb[5] divisions, the latter as a multibot entry with the 120lb version of Emily.[6]
Eugene's name was inspired by the Pink Floyd song, Careful With That Axe, Eugene.[7]
Outside BattleBots[]
Prior to the 2009 Championships, an earlier incarnation of Eugene competed on the North American live circuit armed with a variety of horizontal spinners. This version was known to have first debuted at ComBots Cup I in November 2005, going on to make further appearances at Mechwars, Battle Beach, Robot Fighting League and RoboGames events until 2008.
Amongst the opponents Eugene faced during this period included Megabyte,[8] Shrederator,[9] Last Rites[10] and Robot Wars World Champion Storm 2.[11] BotRank.com lists Eugene as having an 8-9 match record prior to its 2009 redesign.[12]

Eugene vs. Suspect Device (Loser's Bracket) Now relegated to the Loser's bracket, Eugene fought Suspect Device for a chance to maintain its place in the competition. Again, BattleBots records list the match as lasting the full three minutes, with Eugene declared to have won by knockout.[2][3] |
Eugene vs. Mudhole Bullfrog (Loser's Bracket) Eugene's next match-up was against Mudhole Bullfrog. This proved to be its quickest fight yet, with official BattleBots records confirming a 28-second knockout victory over the Team Wapu machine.[2][3] |
Eugene vs. Megabyte (Loser's Bracket) Having picked up its third win of the competition, Eugene would proceed to face former ComBots Cup rival Megabyte.
