Disarray is a heavyweight robot built by Wildcat Robotics, formerly known as Team 23037, which has competed at BattleBots Proving Ground as part of the Destruct-A-Thon live show. The team have also applied for BattleBots World Championship VIII.

It is a four-wheeled, cyan and black robot armed with a large, belt-driven drisk weapon at the front powered by a brushless NeuMotor. According to the team, their weapon weighs 45lbs and is capable of spinning at up to 250mph.[1] Disarray also features a dedicated self-righting mechanism towards the back. The overall design of Disarray resembles a stingray, evidenced by its large curved wedges protruding from its sides and resembling fins. Wildcat Robotics, made up of University of Arizona students, began work on Disarray in the fall of 2022 as the team's university Capstone project, and uploaded an application video to World Championship VIII in May 2023.[2][3]

According to an article by EI Inde, immediately had plans to enter BattleBots Proving Ground, a part of the live show with a focus on teams trying out new designs, hoping to then be accepted for World Championship VIII later in the year.[1] The team later confirmed they would compete on the weekend of May 6-7, 2023, and was scheduled to face Pteradominator.[4] It took the win in both fights, finishing its first weekend of fights with an unbeaten 2-0 record. Disarray returned in September 2023 for another pair of Proving Ground fights.[5]

In the months since its previous fights, Wildcat Robotics swapped out Disarray's batteries and speed controllers. It also now sported mounting points for forks on the front wedges and a tail which doubled up as a self-righting mechanism. Accompanying Disarray was a 12lb, flame-throwing minibot called Heatwave. Its scheduled opponent was a fellow rookie in Taco Tuesday, who it defeated in its opening fight to extend its run to 3-0. This was ended in their second encounter of the weekend, however, when Disarray's self-righting mechanism failed after being flipped over. Disarray returned again in late October and fought a Top 32 finisher and Golden Bolt qualifier in JackPot, losing both matches.

Disarray was scheduled to fight Orbitron across the weekend of March 9-10, 2024. In January, Al Hurworth confirmed Disarray would be rebuilt from the ground up ahead of its 2024 battles and feature no shared parts with its 2023 build.[6] Among its upgrades were a more compact design, thicker ¼" steel armor, new batteries and repositioning the weapon belts to the outside of the weapon in order to allow for a single disk weapon option.[2] Parts for this rebuild arrived in February, and Disarray was ready for its March fights. However, its winless streak stretched to five following two losses by knockout to Orbitron during the Saturday and Sunday shows.

Disarray will fight three more robots during BattleBots FaceOffs in October 2024.[7] Ahead of the competition, the robot was again fully redesigned, now sporting a large plow protecting its front wheels and a single disk configuration.[8]

Outside BattleBots[]

Disarray was on display during Bash at the REC on August 20, 2023, a campus event held for students of The University of Arizona.

The team was also registered for RoboGames 2024, but withdrew in March that year. The team would host a competition called Wildcat Robotics Sonoran Showdown on March 23, 2024.

Disarray vs. Pteradominator (5/7/2023)

Disarray Proving Ground

Disarray as it appeared for its July battles.

Disarray's first ever BattleBots fight came in BattleBots Proving Ground, where it took on Pteradominator. For this fight, Disarray lacked a self-righting mechanism, making it vulnerable to flipping attacks.

Disarray Pteradominator 5-7 1

Disarray tears into Pteradominator.

As Pteradominator dashed forward, the more nimble Disarray manoeuvred around and pointed its weapon at its opponent. Disarray then slammed into Pteradominator, turning it over in the first seven seconds, giving it a significant upper hand as it pushed it into the corner.

Disarray strikes Pteradominator a second time.

Disarray then lined up a large hit onto the side of Pteradominator, causing several batteries to be ejected from the bot and severely crippling its movement.

The countdown started on Pteradominator, but with four seconds remaining, it was able to show slight movement from one side so the fight was allowed to continue. Disarray came in one last time and bumped into Pteradominator without its weapon moving. This move fully incapacitated Pteradominator, and a fresh count began.

Disarray took the win by knockout in 1:03, marking its debut with a win.[9]

Disarray vs. Pteradominator (5/8/2023)

The following day, Disarray took on Pteradominator for a second time. On this occasion, Pteradominator opted to lead with its spinning weaponry.

Disarray Pteradominator 5-8 1

Both bots go weapon-to-weapon.

Both robots began the fight in the blue square, where Pteradominator's flipper was slightly ajar and its spinner got up to speed. The same could not be said for Disarray, however, whose weapon struggled to power up. Both bots went weapon-to-weapon and sparks flew, but Disarray quickly asserted its superior drive power and rammed Pteradominator into the housing for the screws.

Pteradominator escaped from danger, but Disarray gave chase and shoved it into the opposite screws, buckling the front of Pteradominator. Though Disarray's weapon was no longer spinning, it still proved capable of damaging its opponent, who could now only drive in arcs on the edge of the red square with its weapon also disabled.
"Disarray... having its way."
— Bil Dwyer as Disarray asserts its dominance

Disarray Pteradominator 5-8 2

Pteradominator is counted out.

Though parts began to come off Disarray, these were purely cosmetic and the Arizona team continued their assault on Pteradominator. But with a minute to go, Pteradominator appeared high-centered as its wheels spun but the robot could no longer move. A count began and Disarray took the win by knockout to finish the weekend undefeated.

Disarray vs. Taco Tuesday (9/16/2023)

Disarray returned to the BattleBox in September 2023, where it fought Taco Tuesday.

Taco Tuesday vs Disarray 1 1

Disarray initiates a pin on Taco Tuesday.

In the first exchange, Disarray tore both right side weapon pulleys from Taco Tuesday's weapon, leaving it at half power. Taco Tuesday retaliated by cutting into the left fin of Disarray before being driven into the short corner. Here, it was hit by the pulverizer and struggled to escape until almost a minute into the fight. Disarray then pinned Taco Tuesday against the paddle, getting its drisc underneath the shell of Carter Hurd's robot.

Taco Tuesday vs Disarray 1 2

Disarray pops Taco Tuesday into the air.

Taco Tuesday escaped again and struck Disarray's minibot. However, it was punted across the BattleBox floor several times in the second half of the battle. Taco Tuesday would remain stuck in the corner unable to move out of it for much of the last minute of the fight, also losing its remaining weapon belts and ending the fight without a working spinner.

The fight went the distance, with Disarray picking up the win by crowd vote, extending its career record to 3-0.

Disarray vs. Taco Tuesday (9/17/2023)

Disarray took on Taco Tuesday for a second time during the weekend. Ahead of the fight, Team Wildcat were experiencing issues with their weapon. Though this was eventually resolved, the team ran out of time to test their self-righter.[10]

Taco Tuesday vs Disarray 2 1

Disarray attacks the side of Taco Tuesday.

In the first exchange, Disarray would get around to Taco Tuesday's side and landed a series of blows that turned Taco Tuesday over. Taco Tuesday would quickly rebound due to its geometry.

Taco Tuesday POV hit Disarray

The knockout hit on Disarray.

Finding its footing, Taco Tuesday would engage in a weapon-to-weapon collision with a charging Disarray, flipping it over. After not having had time to test their self-righting tail, this mechanism failed and Disarray could not recover from being upside-down.[11]

Taco Tuesday vs Disarray 2 2

Taco Tuesday strikes an immobile Disarray.

Taco Tuesday went after Disarray's minibot, before trying to right the main robot. This effort proved futile and Disarray was counted out, ending the rookie team's unbeaten streak.

Disarray vs. JackPot (10/28/2023)

Disarray vs. JackPot, as advertised on the BattleBots website.

Returning on the weekend of October 28-29, 2023, Disarray took on Las Vegas locals JackPot. For these fights, the team had worked on their self-righter and ensured it had sufficient torque to right their robot if flipped.

Disarray JackPot (1) KO

Disarray is punted over by JackPot.

Disarray drove to the middle of the arena as JackPot approached with its lifter raised. The rookie bot backed up slightly before going weapon-to-weapon with the Sin City Slugfest finalist.

Disarray lies immobile next to the screws.

These impacts cost Disarray several weapon belts and as it looked to recover, JackPot delivered a follow-up shot to its left side, tearing off the fin and leaving a gash in Disarray's weapon. Parts littered the BattleBox floor as Disarray was thrown back on impact, landing inverted against the Upper Deck.

This time, Disarray showed more hesitation in landing an early hit as JackPot also remained patient. Jeff Waters' robot then met Disarray head-on, ripping into its side fin.

Disarray vs

The knockout shot.

JackPot delivered another hit to the front of Disarray, throwing it upside-down. The drisc of Disarray dragged it back towards the short corner before it slammed into the Upper Deck. Disarray was again able to showcase its self-righting mechanism as it hoisted itself over.

However, JackPot was lurking and struck the rear of Disarray, tearing its back panel and hitting its lithium polymer batteries. As thick, white smoke began to pour from Disarray, it was counted out and finished the weekend winless.

Disarray vs. Orbitron (3/9/2024)

Disarray Shark Bait

Disarray next took on fellow rookies in Orbitron across the weekend of March 9-10, 2024. For this fight, Disarray was accompanied by an off-the-shelf remote-control monster truck which they named Shark Bait. The purpose of the truck was to disrupt Orbitron's AI system.

Orbitron Disarray 1 PG KO

Orbitron gets the decisive blow.

Disarray began this fight on the back foot as Orbitron's new forks helped drive it into the corner. The fight moved to the middle of the arena and as Disarray looked to retaliate, Orbitron charged with its rear disc and flung Disarray over, ripping off its right-front wheel and disabling that side of drive in the process.

Orbitron Disarray 1 KO

Orbitron leaves Disarray to be counted out.

Although its left-side drive was still functional, Disarray was unable to right itself from its inverted position and was counted out in under a minute.

Disarray vs. Orbitron (3/10/2024)

Disarray was scheduled to fight Orbitron for a second time the following day.

Disarray drove at its opponent and turned, but offered its flank to Orbitron in the first ten seconds. Orbitron tore off a fin and removed Disarray's left-rear tire. Obitron then led with its forks and drove Disarray into the corner, throwing it upside-down.

Disarray Orbitron 2 KO

Orbitron inverts Disarray again.

With the main robot's self-righting mechanism failing, Shark Bait attempted to distract Orbitron, but suffered a hit which shattered its plastic body. Disarray was nudged back into the action by the paddle hazard, but this only served to tee the Arizona representatives up for one final shot from Orbitron's rear blade.

Orbitron vs Disarray 2 Sharkbait

Orbitron goes after Disarray's minibot.

As Disarray was counted out, Orbitron again turned its attention to Shark Bait and tore its body off completely before removing a wheel. A knockout was declared and Disarray's winless weekend was confirmed.
