D-Monic was a middleweight robot built by Team Cerberus which competed in four BattleBots IQ competitions between 2002 and 2005.
It was initially a two-wheel drive black and silver robot armed with an electrically-powered hammer, which was later replaced by a vertical spinner. D-Monic sported a frame made from welded mild steel tubing. D-Monic won a single fight before falling into the loser's bracket, and then being eliminated from the competition. D-Monic was rebuilt after the event, but the team opted to pursue a new design for future BattleBots events.
Returning for the 2003 event, D-Monic was rebuilt from the ground up. The hammer weapon was replaced by a three-toothed, 18" spinning disk made from aluminum. While the mild steel frame remained, it was now armored in a mix of materials, including steel diamond plate on the top and bottom and either stainless steel or titanium on the back.[2]
The team ultimately switched to a completely new design consisting of a rectangular body with the disk on the front and a rear wedge, later known as D-Monic. The rear wedge had the flag of the United States across its face. Unlike before, much of D-Monic's construction was steel, but it largely used the same internal components as its predecessor.
A brand new build was made for 2004. This was originally designed to be a horizontal spinner, but the team instead looked to build on their vertical spinner design. According to the team, the previous year's frame was damaged beyond repair so a brand new frame was made for this event. This frame was made from steel tubing and angle iron, with 6061 aluminum for armor. Many of D-Monic's internal components remained the same.[3]
For 2005, D-Monic was again rebuilt. This version was made almost entirely from mild steel, with various thicknesses ranging from ⅛" to ½" armoring the robot. This iteration also used skids made from ½" thick UMHW plastic to aid with mobility as its vertical spinner was active.[4] D-Monic's top panel was translucent and made from thin polycarbonate sheet. This time, however, D-Monic lost both of its tournament fights and was eliminated early.
Team Cerberus member Casey Kuhns later joined Caustic Creations, who helped with Mean Green Fight'n Machine, a middleweight which fought in ROBOLympics 2004, as well as competing with Poison Arrow and Copperhead. Team Cerberus still compete in various other leagues to this day, though in smaller weight classes.

BattleBots IQ 2004[]

D-Monic IV vs. The Kerminator D-Monic IV entered the 2004 tournament, where it first fought The Kerminator. As the match began, D-Monic started spinning up its blade while The Kerminator pursued it. When the two collided in the center of the arena, The Kerminator got struck on the left side by the disc. Unfortunately for Team Cerberus, D-Monic's disk was not working properly, only grazing the side of The Kerminator. The few other hits that followed did little to no damage to The Kerminator's rear end. The Kerminator moved away, letting D-Monic spin up to full speed again, before charging in with its rear and taking a minor shot to the left side, taking no damage. Shortly after, The Kerminator spun around to try and attack with its sawblade, losing the right plate in the process. After a bit of maneuvering, The Kerminator took another minor hit from D-Monic's disk to the wedge, taking no damage and pushing D-Monic away briefly. Afterwards, The Kerminator sat and spun, delivering a minor hit to the disc. After some maneuvering, D-Monic's disk suddenly spun down to a stop, prompting The Kerminator to charge in head on with its saw and push the vertical disk spinner around from the side, eventually shoving D-Monic into the wall, where they were separated. By then, the disk spinner stopped working completely, and with The Kerminator's saw blade down as well, it became a pushing and shoving match. The Kerminator started sitting and spinning, delivering a couple of minor hits to the front of D-Monic. After some more maneuvering, The Kerminator started bashing head on into the disabled disk, eventually pushing D-Monic briefly. The Kerminator continued to run around and bash into D-Monic, while Team Cerberus' bot lacked mobility. Eventually time ran out, and The Kerminator won the resulting judges' decision, knocking D-Monic down into the loser's bracket.
D-Monic IV vs. Taxi Disaster D-Monic IV then took on Taxi Disaster. It won this fight by knockout after Taxi Disaster suddenly stopped moving, and continued on in the loser's bracket.[7]
D-Monic IV vs. Stop-Bot D-Monic IV also took on Stop-Bot. After losing its weapon early in the fight, D-Monic IV continued to drive into Stop-Bot in an attempt to halt its overhead bar spinner. One of these attacks managed to flip Stop-Bot over, resulting in it being inverted and unable to self-right, despite its best efforts. D-Monic IV therefore took the win by knockout and advanced.[8]
D-Monic IV vs. PlasticBot Next up for D-Monic IV was PlasticBot. D-Monic IV picked up another win in this fight.
D-Monic IV vs. Against All Odds At an unspecified stage in the loser's bracket, D-Monic IV faced Against All Odds. It won this fight and continued on.[9]
D-Monic IV vs. DBC2 Its next opponent in the loser's bracket was DBC2. D-Monic IV lost this fight, however, and was eliminated from the competition.
Middleweight Rumble D-Monic IV returned for the Rumble at the end of the tournament. It is not known who won the rumble, but D-Monic was not moving from the start and therefore played very little part in the battle.
BattleBots IQ 2005[] | |
D-Monic V vs. Chrome Dome Now known as D-Monic V, Team Cerberus returned for BattleBots IQ 2005. They faced Chrome Dome, but lost this match after becoming immobile near the wall and fell into the loser's bracket.[10]
D-Monic V vs. Mr. Plow D-Monic V also took on Mr. Plow. However, it again experienced weapon issues and found itself being driven around the arena by Mr. Plow. D-Monic was immobilized and lost this fight by knockout being eliminated from the competition as a result.[11]
Middleweight Rumble D-Monic V returned for a middleweight rumble towards the end of the competition. However, it became stuck in the corner of the arena early on and was not freed, ultimately losing out to Spinal Tap. |
