Carapace was a middleweight robot built by students of the University of Central Florida which fought at BattleBots IQ 2005 as part of the College division.
It was a wedge-shaped, invertible robot with four double-stacked drive wheels. Carapace had no known active weapon, instead relying on its pushing power to control fights. Its name comes from the word given to describe the hard, protective shells of tortoises, crustaceans and similar animals. The word can also be used to refer to any form of defensive covering. Carapace won its first two fights, but lost to Icewave and Checkmate and was eliminated, despite its unique use of framing to try and nullify the former's primary weapon.
Carapace is not known to have returned after the 2005 competition.

Carapace vs. Checkmate Carapace's first opponent came in Round 1, where it took on the returning Checkmate. It won this fight and advanced in the winner's bracket. |
Carapace vs. Mercenary Next up for Carapace was Mercenary, which it defeated to continue on.[1] |
Carapace vs. Icewave Icewave was Carapace's third opponent. For this battle, its team added a welded metal frame to Carapace in order to keep Icewave's bar spinner at bay. The frame of Carapace proved effective in deterring Icewave early on, which went without its front plow for this battle. Carapace pushed Icewave back and its bar hit the arena wall, but was slow to recover after freeing the Team UI robot. This allowed Icewave to get a hit on the rear of Carapace, leaving it driving sluggishly. Carapace was immobile soon after and was counted out.[2] |
Carapace vs. Checkmate Needing a win to remain in the competition, Carapace drew Checkmate in a rematch from the first round. This time, however, Carapace lost and was eliminated from the tournament. |
