Cage Spinners are a scarcely-seen type of overhead, horizontal spinner which date back to Comedy Central seasons of BattleBots. The term was coined by Terry Ewert of Team Whyachi.
History and Design[]
Similar in functionality to shell spinners, cage spinners look to use a similar tactic with a frame-like spinning mass.
Made famous by the Ewert family, the cage spinner design was first seen on their superheavyweight Whyachi, as well as their championship-winning heavyweight turned superheavyweight Son of Whyachi. Though less known, robots such as Centipede, Bust-O-Matic, dropout Bad Grammar and the Ewert family's own YU812 also sported such weaponry. Middleweight competitor Playmate was described to have featured cage spinner weaponry, though no images of the robot have been revealed since it competed in Season 3.0 and 4.0.
In 2016, Team Whyachi rebuilt Son of Whyachi for the World Championship II heavyweight division and competed as the only heavyweight cage spinner design since the show's revival, most recently competing in the 2020 side competition BattleBots: Bounty Hunters.
