Black Ice abc2016

Black Ice.

Black Ice was a robot which competed in Season 2 of ABC's BattleBots reboot. It was created by former astronaut Dan Barry. Black Ice is incredibly similar in shape to former competitor Punjar, but equipped with a flywheel-driven tethered harpoon weapon as well as two tiny vertically-spinning weapons. It also featured a very unique tertiary weapon: A magnetized bar of steel which Black Ice would drop at the beginning of the fight and use as cover from enemy weapons. Black Ice made waves early in the tournament, pulling a major upset in the qualifier round.

Robot History

ABC Season 2

Like eleven other robots, Black Ice was forced to go through a preliminary qualifying round in order to advance to the main bracket. Black Ice's two opponents in its match were Skorpios and Bad Kitty. Immediately at the start of the match, Black Ice dropped its roadblock bar, then drive over to where Skorpios and Bad Kitty were fighting. Skorpios managed to stick itself underneath the screws and immobilize itself. With the match now down to it and Bad Kitty, Black Ice used its lower wedge to drive Bad Kitty around. Bad Kitty did however land some hits on Black Ice, damaging its flywheel and breaking its weapon. Eventually, Bad Kitty's drive motors burned out, giving Black Ice the shock upset victory by KO at 2:35. This win put Black Ice to the round of 48, where it faced the Season 1 runner-up and eventual champion of Season 2, Tombstone.

Tombstone scars the immobile Black Ice

Black Ice was able to deflect a couple of minor blows from Tombstone's spinning blade, but Tombstone managed to get one good pop into Black Ice and this hit did something to the electronics of Black Ice which simultaneously killed the left drive motor and stuck the right motor into a state of permanent forward. Black Ice was barely moving around the BattleBox and Tombstone pushed Black Ice into one of the corners of the BattleBox, beaching it against the wall for an easy KO at 1:01. Black Ice unfortunately was not chosen to be a wild card meaning it was eliminated from the tournament.
