"Legendary builder Donald Hutson brings his latest creation CU-JAW into a groundbreaking Capture the Flag robot battle — facing off against our in-house brawler “BBot.”"
— Battle of the Bolt being advertised by BattleBots on Facebook[1]

Battle of the Bolt, also informally known as Capture the Bolt, is the name of an upcoming side event which took place during select BattleBots: Destruct-A-Thon shows in September 2025.

It was the first BattleBots event to showcase walking robots, with the inaugural Battle of the Bolt running alongside the dedicated 'Creature Combat' week of Proving Ground battles between Armageddon and walkerbot Arachnophobia. According to Drew Stowell of Robotic Legends and Armageddon, the game was trialed on September 12, 2025. However, games did not take place during the shows, instead occurring before or afterwards.

Games thus far have taken place between Mutant Robots walker CU-JAW and two modified robotic dogs called BBot. Information on games played thus far has been very scarce and footage has not been shared to Facebook Supporters or publicly as of December 8, 2025.

Format[]

Battle of the Bolt takes place within the traditional BattleBox, where a rectangular perimeter is laid out for the game to take place. The objective of the game is for each robot to traverse the arena to the opposite square and back while collecting and carrying a 'bolt' (consisting of custom dumbbell shape with the hexagonal ends painted yellow) from one end to the other. This ruleset runs in parallel to traditional BattleBots combat rules, as competitors can seek a knockout win or attack their opponent to score valuable Damage, Aggression and Strategy points.

Scoring Points[]

A point is scored for each quarter of the designated area that a robot carries a bolt. There are three of these bolts in the arena: one large bolt in the middle, and two smaller, lighter bolts behind each competitor.[2] Robots can be penalised for crossing over the perimeter, with points subtracted from any scored by retrieving bolts. While competitors are encouraged to fight as normal, a fourth criterion for judging rewards the robot which collects the most 'bolts' within a three minute timespan.
