The BattleBots High School Championship was a BattleBots-sanctioned event held in 2009 within the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California. It was one of three divisions which made up the 2009 BattleBots Championships.
Registration began on 27 January, 2009 and ended on March 19 the same year. 28 competitors took part in the competition, open to 120lb middleweight robots built by high school teams and occurring alongside the Pro and Collegiate Championships.[e 1][1][2][3] Among the more recognizable builders included previous 120lb champions Team Falcon, who competed with the BioHazard-esque lifter BABS. Will Bales, later known for his ABC and Discovery season appearances with HyperShock, also fought with the Ransom Everglades team and their eight-wheeled machine SpiderPig.
Like other events sanctioned by BattleBots, fights were held within a version of the iconic BattleBox shared with the Collegiate and Pro Championships.
In common with the other 2009 Championships, the main tournament adopted a double-elimination format, similar to those from previous live events such as the 2004 NPC Charity Open. Robots defeated in the main rounds would be relegated to a 'losers' bracket' run in parallel, with the aim of securing a place in the overall final against the best-placed robot in the 'winners' bracket. Such was the nature of the format, that robots in the loser's bracket often required more fights to reach the final than those remaining in the winners' bracket. A non-championship exhibition battle was also staged at the end of the competition, this being a head-to-head match between Copperhead 3.141592654 and Das Bot.[4]
Unlike the Pro or Collegiate Championships, no known broadcast deal is known to have been planned for the 2009 High School Championship. However, the event was still professionally filmed and edited alongside the former, with footage from certain matches and interviews later being publicly released by BattleBots and event sponsor Autodesk Inventor.
The 2009 High School Championship was ultimately won by Richardson High School and their shell spinner The Blender, defeating The Gow School's Tin Shredder in the overall final.
