— Official BattleBots website description

BattleBots FaceOffs is the name of a non-televised BattleBots series which took place from September until December 2024 and began being uploaded to YouTube in March 2025. The FaceOffs have been fought during selected weekends of the BattleBots: Destruct-A-Thon live shows, as part of an updated show format introduced following Destruct-A-Thon's resumption on September 6, 2024.

During a June 2024 BattleBots panel hosted at Open Sauce, Greg Munson confirmed that across the months of September, October and November, 28 competitors would fight in "mini-tournaments" with the view for these fights to be posted exclusively to their YouTube channel.[1] Despite what the logo suggests, calling these "World Championship VIII pre-qualifiers", it is unknown whether performances in these round robin fights will result in automatic qualification into a subsequent televised season.

In addition to fight footage, BattleBots produced behind-the-scenes content both in The Pits and outside the venue.[2] Raw footage containing introductions, fights and sporadic interviews were first shared to Facebook Supporters in late 2024.

Format[]

Unlike a regular World Championship season or indeed the spin-off series Bounty Hunters or BattleBots: Champions, the FaceOffs groups follow a round robin format with four robots billed for each of the eight groups. Every competitor will fight its three opponents one time, with the team with the most wins across the group becoming the overall winner. In the event of more than one team finishing with the same record, the winner of their individual head-to-head battle is deemed the winner of the group. Each group winner was presented with a Giant Washer award, previously given to Team RioBotz at the end of the Proving Ground All Star Week in April 2024.

In the absence of regular season judges, fights which went the distance were decided by crowd vote. The live audience in attendance took on the role of the judges, with the loudest cheers determining the winner.

August 2024 Announcements[]

The seven groups were originally set to take place across the days of September 6-8, 20-22, 27-29, October 4-6, 18-20, 25-27 and November 1-3, but it was announced on August 6, 2024 by the Skorpios and Malice teams that plans for BattleBots FaceOffs to occur on these dates were "in limbo".[3][4] It was subsequently reiterated by various builders (including the Skorpios and Malice teams themselves) that FaceOffs was still planned to go ahead; a matchup between Malice and Lucky was announced for a revised date of September 26.[5][6][7] With BattleBots needing more time to prepare for the event, the group containing Slammo!, Cobalt, Warthog and JackPot was postponed from September 6-8 to December 20-22.[8] The official website later listed Vertigo as fighting in this group instead of JackPot, and UFWoe ultimately dropped out in favor of Rusty. Vertigo itself would later be replaced by Hot Mess after HiJinx's team were unable to attend due to captain Jen Herchenroeder being on vacation.

In mid-September, an eighth group was announced, containing Minotaur, Free Shipping, Claw Viper and Big Dill.

Proposed FaceOff Championship[]

During September 2024, the BattleBots website was updated to list a tentative plan for a "FaceOff Championship". The Championship was suggested to involve the highest "ranked" robots from the eight initial groups, though it was not explicitly stated whether this would comprise of the eight group winners.[9]

Further details on the proposal were discussed in a June 2025 Skorpios Builder Blog. Relaying information received directly from BattleBots, Zach Lytle mentioned that the Championship was to prospectively feature the eight Giant Washer winners from the 2024 groups.[10] With the concurrent announcement of the Battle of the Verts and Next Generation groups, references to the "FaceOff Championship" were removed from the BattleBots website the same month.[11]

Reveals and Trailers[]

On March 8, 2025, it was announced to social media pages that the Group F battle between HyperShock and Tombstone would feature as part of an eight-minute preview airing on March 11.[12] With the Episode 1 teaser being from the sixth group to be filmed, it is therefore confirmed that the eight groups will not air in the same order that they were filmed in.

The first FaceOffs group was split into two parts, the first of which premiered on March 27, 2025[13]. The second half of Episode 1 would be shared on April 4[14] and Episode 2 was uploaded as a single episode on May 8, 2025.[15] Episode 3 premiered on July 24[16] and Episode 4 followed on September 18.[17]

FaceOffs Groups (2024)[]

NOTE: The 'Group A-H' titling is an indication of the order these groups took place and were filmed in. Much like a televised BattleBots season's fights, they are confirmed to be shared out of order, evidenced by 'Group F' being shown as 'Episode 1'. Group D was later brought forward in to become Episode 4, with the order of subsequent episodes not known.
