The 2009 BattleBots Championships was the collective name for three BattleBots competitions held in Vallejo, California in April 2009.

While essentially running the same BattleBots IQ format, this year saw a professional heavyweight class thrown into the array of existing divisions. Pro and Collegiate competitors were now required to have an active weapon as per the design rules, but this was not expected of High School entrants.[1]

Among the crew for these championships were several former competitors. Team LOGICOM captain Brian Nave was chief technical inspector with Gage Cauchois, Jim Newton, Joe Murowski, Ilya Polyakov and Ray Scully credited as technical inspectors as well. Mark Setrakian, Pete Abrahamson and Frank Jenkins were the designated judges.

Pro Championship[]

The professional championship saw a total of 24 robots compete with robots weighing up to 220lbs. The winner of this was Paul Ventimiglia's Brutality, which defeated loser's bracket winner Donald Hutson and Root Canal in the final, with VD6.0 taking third.

Collegiate Championship[]

Similar to in BattleBots IQ events past, the 2009 Championships hosted a separate division for college teams with middleweight robots weighing up to 120lbs. Several teams were mentored by former Comedy Central BattleBots builders throughout the event, such as Donald Hutson and Christian Carlberg. Falcon won this division, defeating Triton in the championship battle. Shell spinner Category 5 took third place.

Trivia[]

  • According to an archived post announcing the event, the 2009 Championships were originally supposed to begin on April 20. It is unknown whether this was a typo, or if the dates were changed.
  • The 2009 Championships were also set to debut an Innovative Class, which would act as an "anything goes" division with no recognized weight boundaries.
