Backlash was one of six BattleBots competitors released as part of the Metal Mechanics line of construction kits released by Jakks Pacific in 2001.
The first release of Backlash was based on its Season 2.0 appearance, evident by the design of its weapon supports and the circular holes in its disk. The toy features two unpowered drive wheels which are screwed into place, as well as a brushed motor powering the iconic disk of Backlash once two AA batteries are inserted. The disk itself is made from real metal, as are its armor panels. The weapon teeth are made from rubber, and the chassis itself from plastic. Once complete, Backlash's weapon can be powered by a switch positioned on the toy's underside.
As was the case with other Metal Mechanics sets, this comes with a screwdriver/wrench tool known as 'Techno-tools' as well as screws, stickers and a detailed instructions sheet.
The kit was originally available to buy for $16.00 on the BattleBots website, as well as being stocked in various department stores.
A updated version of this toy was released in 2002, based on the Season 3.0 appearance of Backlash. The most notable differences concerned the design of its primary weapon, angled supports either side of it, and a second O-ring belt powering the disk.
Trivia[]
