Axes are a type of overhead weapon seen on BattleBots competitors. They are functionally identical to hammers, but differ in their shape and design.
An axe consists of a long shaft with either a large blade or spiked head at the end, offering different ways to damage opponents. Methods of powering axes include rack and pinion systems, compressed gas and electric motors with gear reduction. Depending on the shape of the head, the term 'axe' and 'hammer' are often used interchangeably.

Many of the axes seen throughout BattleBots history can be attributed to one of two categories:
Spiked axes, also known as pickaxes or simply picks, are characterised by their narrow, sharp spike at the end. This offers a smaller surface area which, on impact, aims to punch holes into opposition armor. Several thwackbots had spikes incorporated into their design in order to behave like sideways axes. One of the most well-known examples is frenZy, whose hybrid axe/hammer was one of the most dangerous overhead weapons of the Comedy Central seasons, as it was spiked on one side and blunt on the other.

A bladed axe offers a larger surface area to hack away with, looking to dent armor and cause internal damage. Bladed axes can be single or double-sided, and are often inspired by a fireman's axe.
