Ankle Biter, sometimes spelled Anklebiter, was a middleweight robot built by Odin Robotics which competed in all five seasons of Comedy Central BattleBots, as well as the 1999 Long Beach event.
It was originally a two-wheel drive, wedge-shaped robot with a small saw blade housed in the center of its wedge, upgraded to twin saws for Season 3.0 and 4.0. Ankle Biter went winless from Season 1.0 through to Season 4.0, also entering several middleweight rumbles.
For Season 5.0, Ankle Biter was rebuilt. Its general chassis shape remained similar, but the wedge was replaced with a flat front which now housed a vertical spinner. The team had interchangeable weaponry, able to fit Ankle Biter with a spinning bar or flywheel disk. To tackle the possibility of Ankle Biter becoming high-centered, John McKenzie added a small pneumatic ram to its rear. These upgrades proved effective as Ankle Biter won six successive fights to make the middleweight quarter-finals. It lost at this stage, however, to Turtle.
John McKenzie also built Odin for the superheavyweight tournaments.
Outside BattleBots[]
Prior to BattleBots, a heavyweight version of Ankle Biter fought in the 1997 US Robot Wars. It was built from aluminum and featured abrasive cutting disks, though these were non-functional in battle. However, it lost its first and only battle against La Machine.[1]
The team would also enter Steel Conflict 2 with Ankle Biter, under the name Chronus. For this event, the robot received a large rear wedge to accompany its flywheel disk. Chronus chalked up wins over Sweet, Jimmy and Rabid Javelinas, before losing to Max Wedge. A second loss to Karcas confirmed its elimination.

Ankle Biter vs. Heavy Metal Noise Ankle Biter, unfortunately, was no longer seeded for this tournament and therefore had to go through the qualifiers again. After receiving a bye in the second preliminary round, Ankle Biter fought Heavy Metal Noise in its only match in Season 4.0. The initial hit between the two robots was devastating, with Ankle Biter getting knocked back amid a shower of white sparks whilst spinning around like a top. Ankle Biter's saws were destroyed by Heavy Metal Noise's next attack, which scratched and sparked against its own armor. Ankle Biter's back end was torn open with the next hit, flipping it over. However, following another hit, which caused more noise and sparks, broke one of Heavy Metal Noise's posts, so that now when it tried to turn right, its discs ground against the floor. Heavy Metal Noise was undeterred, though. It went straight back over to Ankle Biter and hit it again, flipping it back over. This final hit of the fight smacked Ankle Biter up onto the top of the spikestrip, where it could not move. Ankle Biter lost the fight by knockout and fell once more. |
