Abbatoir, alternatively known as Blue Thunder and Slaughterhouse 5, was a superheavyweight robot built by Ray Scully of Team Wetware. It competed in the Las Vegas 1999 event and three seasons of Seasons 1.0, 2.0, and 5.0 ( for Seasons 3.0 and 4.0 and it had technical issues) of Comedy Central BattleBots.
It was originally a beam-shaped robot armed with a gas-powered overhead spinning bar. Abbatoir was originally designed to be a walker, but had to be modified the night before its competitive debut to have wheels and 90 pounds of weight removed. The robot featured four welds held together with duct tape and utilized a control system that dated back to 1979. For the televised show, Abbatoir was redesigned and no longer had exposed wheels, but also lacked armor to protect its vital components. Abbatoir failed to pick up a win across the six competitions it registered for, two of which saw Team Wetware have to withdraw and another resulted in Abbatoir forfeiting due to technical issues.[1]
As of 2023, Abattoir remains under the ownership of Ray Scully.
Outside BattleBots[]
Abbatoir competed in events after BattleBots under the name Slaughterhouse 5.
Robot History[]
Las Vegas 1999[] |
---|
Abbatoir vs. Ricon Abbatoir's first opponent was Ricon. As Abbatoir started spinning its horizontal blade, Ricon drove straight at Abbatoir's blade and crashed into the spikestrip. Ricon was now only moving around in circles and Abbatoir started moving forward. Abbatoir was moving backwards and Ricon started extending its saw blades as it was still moving in circles. Neither robot was able to make meaningful attacks as Ricon backed itself against the spikestrip and Abbatoir kept moving forwards and backwards. Eventually, Abbatoir started smoking and was no longer moving at all, so was counted out. Ricon won the fight by knockout and Abbatoir was eliminated from the tournament. |
Season 1.0[] |
Abbatoir vs. Rammstein Abbatoir's first opponent in Season 1.0 was Rammstein. Due to the height of Abbatoir's weapon, it could not hit its low profile opponent throughout the match. Abbatoir attempted to use the hellraisers to land on Rammstein but missed. Rammstein then started pushing Abbatoir into the killsaws. Rammstein then started using its spike on Abbatoir's frame and immobilizing it against the spikestrip. Rammstein then drove all the way on the other side of the BattleBox and charged at Abbatoir. At this point, Abbatoir had stopped moving and was counted out. Rammstein won the match by knockout and Abbatoir was eliminated from the tournament again. |
Superheavyweight Royal Rumble Abbatoir also competed in the Superheavyweight Royal Rumble at the end of the tournament. However, Abbatoir was immobile from the beginning, and was quickly pushed against an immobile Ginsu, playing no part in the rumble. Ultimately, Minion was declared the winner of the rumble. |
Season 2.0[] |
Abbatoir vs. Kenny's Revenge Abbatoir returned for Season 2.0, and took on Kenny's Revenge. Prior to the fight, Abbatoir's new gas engine weapon motor was disabled due to safety concerns, rendering its weapon immobile. Both robots moved towards each other and Abbatoir hits Kenny's Revenge, stopping Kenny's Revenge's saws. Kenny's Revenge backed off to let its saws get going again and attacked several more times. Abbatoir tried several times to get into a position where it can push Kenny's Revenge, but instead got pushed over the killsaws. Both robots remained mobile, and Kenny's Revenge got several more good hits in on the nearly immobile Abbatoir. The time ran out and Kenny's Revenge won the fight on a 44-1 judges' decision. This meant that Abbatoir was eliminated from the tournament again. |
Season 5.0[] |
Abbatoir vs. Codebreaker (Forfeit) After two seasons away, Abbatoir returned for Season 5.0. It was no longer seeded for this tournament and therefore had to go through the qualifiers. It was scheduled to fight Codebreaker in the preliminary rounds, but Abbatoir had technical issues and was forced to forfeit. Codebreaker won the fight by default and Abbatoir was eliminated from the tournament once again. |

Mark Beiro Introductions[]
"From San Anselmo, California. Weighing in at 318 and a half pounds, with a number 8 ranking and from the creative mind of Ray Scully and supported by Team Wetware. Ladies and gentlemen, the Blue Thunder, ABBATOIR!"
"Listen up Fernando, this is no Dancing Queen, this BattleBot will be your Waterloo, it's... ABBATOIR!"
Trivia[]
- Despite being registered as Abbatoir for the 1999 Las Vegas event and Season 1.0, the names Blue Thunder and Slaughterhouse 5 were used interchangeably for those respective events.
- Abbatoir's name is a misspelling of the word 'abattoir', which is another word for a slaughterhouse. This misspelling resulted in an ABBA-themed introduction from Mark Beiro.
